Pope Condemns Same Sex Union as Attack on Society
Sat Dec 18,12:31 PM ET
VATICAN CITY (Reuters) - Pope John Paul on Saturday condemned same sex marriage as an attack on the fabric of society and called on Catholics to combat what he said was aggressive attempt to legally undermine the family.
"Attacks on marriage and the family, from an ideological and legal aspect, are becoming stronger and more radical every day," the 84-year old pontiff said in the unusually strong statement.
"Who destroys this fundamental fabric causes a profound injury to society and provokes often irreparable damage."
The Catholic Church teaches that marriage between a man and a women is sacred and that homosexuality is a sin.
That stance has been under pressure in some of its core constituencies, including the United States and Catholic Spain where the socialist government in October approved a controversial draft law to legalize gay unions.
But a counterattack has begun. In the United States, President Bush was swept back to power in the November elections with help from U.S. evangelicals and Catholics who agree with the Pope.
Votes for Bush included solid support from the religious right and his win was interpreted by some as a victory for conservative Christians on issues like gay rights and abortion.
The Polish Pope on Saturday also condemned abortion, artificial procreation and equal status for cohabiting couples as undermining the marital state.
"These things that are presented as civilized progress or scientific conquests, in many cases are in fact a defeat for the dignity of human life and for society," his statement read.

As I said in another thead, the CC is very conservative when it comes to any kind of sexual issue. It's too bad, because they're mostly liberal in other areas.
I still don't get what religion has to do with same-sex marriage rights.

Ya know, I am not gay, but this offends me! I am christian and I am supposed to go around being like God. I don't judge people for what they do/ stand for/ are/ ect, I am a nice human being who thinks all people are equal no matter what. So just beacsue the pope says its wrong I am supposed to condem every gay person I know (which isnt a lot, but still). No I won't, sorry. This is kinda y I don't go to church. If being gay is a sin so be it, I dont need it shoved down my throat. Everything is a sin GET OVER IT! I AM SINNING NOW! ****! (sorry couldnt help it) Let the pope deal with my dirty mouth and not something stupid like homosexuals.
Ok, I know some of this was very irrelavent from what the main topic was, but i feel i needed to let most people know how I feel.
So let me say ledgies! I treat you all the same, NO MATTER WHAT! :xoxo:

It's just a shame that, for those of us whose hopes and dreams of marriage and equal rights are being squashed by these religious institutions and the politicians they have in their pockets, it's not a "sexual issue" at all.

And that on top of everything else! No equal status for cohabiting couples. He really is in the Dark Ages. What an idiot! Really--I really think he's an idiot! Not that I had any respect for him beforehand.
Honestly though, I suspect that is a huge part of the anti-gay movement. Forgive for stating the obvious, but I do believe that a huge part of it is keeping men and women in their traditional roles. People usually point to the sex acts and say that the fundies main beef is with them and they claim they are so unusual and disgusting, but it may be more so a gender roles issue. If you've got two people of the same gender in a romantic relationship, all those traditional ideas about the woman staying at home to pop out the babies and the man being the only one working outside the home are shattered.
But enough of that. I know we've talked it to death. Well, okay, I have. On this message board and too many others.
Thank you for your kind words, Jacob! :wavey:

What I found so laughable is how the Catholic Church, who has committed countless evil atrocities over the centuries, has the f****** nerve to say anyone is attacking "family". The ones recently talked about on this board, the fact that they helped Nazi war criminals to escape (and in fact the Nazi party to run it's war) and the countless people molested by priests... The hypocrisy makes me sick. And the church has more often than not been evil in some way or another since it's f****** inception.
Whatever.

I understand what you mean... and I hope the tone of my response didn't seem like it was directed at you personally, Krista.
It's just my particular beef with certain religious institutions. Homosexuality isn't merely about sex... that's what they try to boil it down to, but it's not that simple.
I've been deeply enough in love with another man, that even if sex was something we could never have shared, I still would have wanted to spend my life with him, and grow old with him. I bristle at the very notion of love between two "consenting" adults ever being "wrong," simple because they're of the same gender.
And what's with the condemnation of "artificial procreation"???
Two people in a loving, committed relationship, who desperately want to have children, should just resign themselves to never having those children if one or the other spouse is infertile???
"Sorry, hon, I know how much you want children, but the Pope says, 'Tough ****.'"

I'm agnostic, but as every Italian I've grown in a society with strong catholic roots. This Pope comes from one of the most stiff and intolerant catholic communities in Europe (history is there to prove it). He would never say anything in favour of homosexuality, abortion, artificial procreation or the use of anti-conceptionals , not even in Africa. He is very respected, and has around him a very conservative entourage, but in the Catholic world right now there are also a lot of influential voices that ask for a deep change with the next Pontiff. I can only hope it will happen.

What makes me laugh is the fact that the catholic church think we give a shiiit what they have to say.
I went to catholic schools for 10 years lol. Finally after my freshman year I said fuc% this shiit and went to my local public school. I never believed in half of their crap at any early age bc they are so hypocritical. One thing that I always loved is that they say only saints go to heaven, all other people go to hell. The only people that get canonized as saints are like high profile public people. But the second anyone dies they go "oh there in heaven with God".
Im more concerned about the temperature in China right now than what some damn church thinks of me. Starting in the 8th grade me and my guy best friend starting having oral sex with each other in the boys locker room LOL. Meanwhile twenty feet away Sister Mary Christmas would be telling everyone that masturbation was a sin lol.

Well - actually I'm of the belief that the Pope actually died years ago and is simply being propped up by a series of cables and sticks....ever see WEekend At Bernies huh? huh? ;)
Seriously - he's not even lucid anymore and I've never been one to agree with or even like the Pope/Vatican so I pretty much just do my own thing...
But seriosly..this on top of my ignorant stupid "Christian" unlce - I'm absolutely sickened by so-called Christians who seem to have missed the point alltogether....
At this point I've been plotting pro-gay things to say at Christmas dinner for some time - just to see if I can get my uncle's goat...if he tries anything I'm coming back at him with an attack on his straight son (also Christian) who knocked up a girl, said it was his first time and that she 'tricked' him into it, ignored her through the whole pregnancy - but now they're acknowledging the kid....sickening...and I do believe the Bible also condemns sex outside of marraige....it could be a fun Crhistmas afterall ;)
Anyway - I'm rambling as usual - but bottom line is there really ARE nice, open-minded, smart religious people out there - it just seems to be the wackos who are the most vocal - but the whole thing is really starting to make me sick. Just sick.

I've gotten into the gay marriage argument with my Dad. It's so frustrating but it is important to me to support things I believe in even if it will cause discord.
IMO God loves gay people and doesn't judge them nor does He (She) judge people that co-habitate. The judgement is done by the church. It is scary how the hypocrisy can trickle down, at least in my family. My father's aunts are always fighting with each other and pointing fingers, it's awful. His uncle is a deacon whose oldest child is clearly a lesbian but will not come out as such because of all of this. The family is just so Catholic, but I have never been able to identify with that religion. So when asked what religion I am I say "none" and it feels very liberating.

I totally agree. Though crimes, cover-ups, hypocrisy, and scandals keep being a part of the Catholic world (I can only speak about it, as I said, it'a living organ in my society, where anyway the separation between State and Church is very solid) there are also many positive examples. For instance one of the most respected and influential priests in Italy is Don Luigi Ciotti, the creator of Gruppo Abele (the page is in English):
http://www.gruppoabele.org/Index.aspx?idmenu=789
I'm just saying it because the portrait of Catholicism that was coming from this thread didn't seem very balanced to me.

I'm still waiting to hear a coherent answer as to how/why gay marriage ruins the sancity of marriage. How the hell does it affect any heterosexuals daily life, and is a couples marriage really affected by a gay couple having a marriage or a civil union. It has never affected me, can't say anyone I know can validly claim their marriage would be affected. I just don't see the problem. Imagine preaching equality and then adding an aerstick saying, but not for the "gay, black, jew, woman..." As for homosexuality being a sin, well the church is so hypocritical about everything I basically just ignor them...I would almost bet that most of their priests are gay, and then their relationship with the alter boys, well thats beyond...btw have they ever actually sent any of these priests to prision or does the church just shelter their own?

To qualify, I will not say not EVERY straight guy fits these quotes. However, I will say that the majority of unmarried unwilling fathers I have known in my life have said things similar to this. Or said the exact things or even DUMBER things. And I have mostly straight friends. And I do not think they are an anomaly. I think they are the norm and they probably represent their particular demographic accurately.
Sheesh, girl, isn't it exhausting being so politically correct ? I am too old to be bothered with it anymore.

Hillary, you have GOT to be kidding me. Have you ever spoken to men who have "gotten a girl pregnant" ?
Here are just a FEW of the things I have heard :
1. "Condoms aren't comfortable" (try 18 years of child support, bucko)
2. "She said she was on the pill" (And you BELIEVED her ? )
3. "We used the rhythm method" (I have some real estate in Florida for you)
4. "She said she was infertile" (See quote #2)
5. "But we were in love and wanted to feel close" (Did the Lifetime network write your response ?)
6. "We didn't have a condom" (There is only ONE WAY to get off ?)
7. "It was only one time" (And you are illiterate ? )
And drumroll please.......
8. I NEVER GOT ANYONE PREGNANT BEFORE. (Does this idiocy even dignify a response ?)
Honey, that is the tip of the iceberg.
Oh christ, you forgot number one:
I PULLED OUT BEFOREHAND.

I only make statements that have been proven by my own painstakingly gathered anecdotal evidence. Don't shoot the messenger !
If only the things I have witnessed were exceptions !
And if only I were a fly on the wall! ;)

As I said in another thead, the CC is very conservative when it comes to any kind of sexual issue. It's too bad, because they're mostly liberal in other areas.
I still don't get what religion has to do with same-sex marriage rights.
That's true, I agree. But let's face. The Pope nor the church will never accept gay relationships. Sounds absurd. And that's the reason why many gays are unhappy. Because this society is teached to get ashamed of gays, to reject them.
As Queen said in The Miracle...
That time will come, one day you'll see.. when we can all be friends.

Catholics are weird (I should know, I'm one of them). The same Church that is anti-war and anti-poverty manages to also be pro-stupid. This is probably why Catholics in America are evenly split politically.

What could I possibly tell you that you couldn't imagine ? Jersey numbers ?
Perhaps locations, positions, measuremnets ?
It's all pretty basic stuff, I assure you. Although I suppose at this juncture that there is a certain exotic quality to locker rooms, tents, and the woods of Oregon in the 1980's........ah, memories :wavey:

I love this.
You can always bring up hot lesbians with the uncle. Even the most rabid homophobic men have fantasies about girl on girl action. As long as they are lipstick lesbians, that is. Large Marge and Ellen won't cut it on that fantasy scene.
well actually one year when I was in high school I didn't want to go to our family Christmas thing - in which my uncle dresses up as Santa and then makes all the "big kids" tell him what they want after the little kids....big "joke" every year and I hate it....
Well that year my mom was like, "You have to go..." And I said, "fine. So when Uncle F. asks me what I want for Christmas I'm going to tell him I want a big ole Lesbian girlfriend....!" That totally freaked me mom out (the thought that I might do that) but alas - I was forced to go anyway - and managed to sneak out when Santa arrived....

Right on - me too  I want ONE, just ONE good, logical reason (that has NOTHING to do with religion) as to why same-sex marraige is such an abbhorent thing....no one can give you that.....there are no answers because this whole thing is based on fear, hatred and ignorance...
