Seriously, though. Yay, Rock A Little!

This was and still is probably my favorite Stevie solo... I listened to this thing regularly well into the mid 90's before it started to feel dated to me... But I still love it.
I love her voice on the whole cd... It's got a hard edge to it for the most part.
I Can't Wait
If I Were You
HAEWAFY
The Nightmare
All stand out tracks for me.
Mmmmm Some Become Strangers. <3 I Can't Wait <3 Sister Honey <3 Imperial Hotel <3 I love RAL. Second only to OSOTM in my book.

Yay, Rock A Little, indeed. :)
Although, I Can't Wait might be my least favorite song on this album. I don't like the intro, although the rest of the song is good. But, that intro kind of kills it for me.
I'm a *huge* fan of No Spoken Word and The Nightmare...my favorite two songs from this album, probably. I don't think she ever rocked as hard on anything else, ever. Just...greatness.
Sister Honey, Imperial Hotel, and Rock A Little= '80s Prince-like funkiness.
And lest we forget...I Sing for the Things. "I'll take off my cape for you...I'll take down my hair for you...anything you want me to do, my love." This is such a beautiful song...did she ever perform this live?
Say what you will about the production, but I'm glad she did something different for this album. The Wild Heart was such a turkey...I'm glad she didn't go any further down that road.

Argh, the only songs I don't care for on RAL are ISFTT and TTM. I actually burned myself a copy that replaced the album edit of ICW with the Extended Rock Mix, ISFTT with Mirror Mirror, TTM with Battle of the Dragon. And it? Is so much better that way.
Mmmmm, RAL.

I LOVE RAL! Second fav Stevie album tied with TISL, of course both are after BD, but...
I like all the songs except IIWY.
I LOVE TTM,SH, HAEWAFY, RAL, ISFTT, seriously if I ever made a Stevie mix CD these songs would have to be on it.
As for cheesy 80s music, well being a "child of the 80s" I can't help but love some of it.

I WUV Rock a Little! FUN music, with timely arrangements and instrumentation, and awesome visuals (cover, graphics, videos, etc...) It may sound dated today, but it didn't in the mid-80s. It was huge.
The thing that really sucked was those weird NuShooz people came out with their "I Can't Wait" at about the same time, and stole some of Stevie's thunder. I remember people in my high school thinking theirs was Stevie's, and vice-versa.

Mmmmm, RAL.
Rock a Little is rad!
She'd been criticized in the past for being a blanded-out blonde musher (one reader of Rolling Stone wrote "Chrissie Hynde could kick that wimp's ass anyday") & for being a little weepy & sniffley (Stevie was sometimes that annoying girl in your high school class -- we all knew one -- who always seemed to have a cold & trudged around carrying a Kleenex box, constantly dabbing at her wet nose).
But on Rock a Little, she strikes back. I don't know about the lyrics, but her attitude said "Piss off!"

I'll quote my previously stated feelings regarding 'Rock A Little'.... 'RAL' is my second favorite Stevie album (tied with 'Shangri-La').
In my opinion, it's her 'Tusk'... it's unbridled, eccentric, moody, headstrong and full of life.
Sure, it's "synthy," but there are plenty of electric guitars to give it crunch, and Stevie's vocals are untamed and off-the-cuff.
I'd say 'RAL' represented a more defiant Stevie Nicks. Brimming with piss and vinegar.
Still with some soft edges, obviously, but "edgier." At least for Stevie.
As I've said, it ranks right up there, for me, with her best albums. I love it, and I view it as her 'Tusk.'
But unlike 'Tusk,' 'Rock A Little' was less about musical experimentation and more about pushing your psyche to some breaking points. It was almost a descent into madness in some ways.
She's out of control and careening towards complete self-destruction. There are glimpes of "the Stevie of old"... and a glimmer of hope that she'll pull through it all... but mostly she's wallowing in the excesses of her self-destructive lifestyle. It's almost like the musical equivalent of Russian Roulette.
Ironically, I said it's "full of life"... but I just get that vibe. There are many who claim that nothing is more freeing than living your life on the edge at least once... and I guess that's what 'RAL' represents to me.

We had a girl like that in high school, and, ironically, her name was Stephanie!
Perhaps also with a little bit of irony, I was one of her biggest supporters. In getting to know her, I felt that others didn't give her enough credit for the things she did do, and focused too much on how fragile/wimpy she seemed.
Guess I've always been a little fascinated by a deep inner strength hidden by an outwardly vulnerable persona. :)

I like Rock A Little! I don't care if it sounds dated.
I agree. It's not like when someone is making an album, they know it will sound dated eventually. We have to remember that, at that time, she was using the "latest sound" that people were excited about. If you listen to interviews from this period, the interviewers often say, "I feel this is the best thing you've done". Sure, they could have just been buttering up to her, but this included people like Jim Ladd who seems to truly admire Stevie.
I have my "personal Rock A Little" CD with Some Become Strangers taken off and Reconsider Me, One More Big Time Rock and Roll Star added.
I know this is old news, but can someone clarify when the vocal for Reconsider Me was recorded? Stevie does not make it clear in the Enchanted liner notes. Is the version on Enchanted entirely a RAL outtake, was it re-recorded for Enchanted, or is it a mix of both? At what point did Don Henley do his vocal? I can normally tell these things just by Stevie's voice quality and tone, but I have trouble on this one. It seems a little too clear to be a RAL vocal and a little too "un-husky" to be a '98 vocal.
Stevie's voice has a "blues mama" kind of vibe on this recording that I enjoy. I also love how she took some risks and "funkified" things. I think of it as Stevie's "guilty pleasure album."
:woohoo: (the "guilty pleasure" comment)
Though it was clear she could not go on singing that way (or go on that way period.....), I LOVE Stevie's RAL voice (album and tour)! "Funkified" is also a good point.

Ah, yes...The Booklet. Someone needs to mention this to Stevie on the Nicks Fix Q&A or something. I tend to think she would care and want it fixed since it's messing with her fans knowing her lyrics.

Rock A Little is my second favourite (after TOSOTM). I love the 80s sound on the album. The title track is an absolute masterpiece. I agree that this is a funky album. I haven't listened to The Nightmare in awhile but re-reading the lyrics I realise I love this song. If I Were You is one of those songs that always cheers me up, and No Spoken Word rocks a lot!
The only song I think is kinda out of place is HAEWAFY. It's a nice song but just feels wrong after The Nightmare, If I Were You and No Spoken Word. I suppose it fits in with the other albums in that they all finish with a ballad though.

I'm not sure if you misunderstood, but my "wimpy/fragile" comment was actually about the girl I knew in school, and about the way people preceived her.
People tend to see Stevie that way too, though, because that is her outward persona... wispy, fey, airy-faery, etc., etc.
But, like I said, I really dig the "vulnerable exterior belying a tough-as-nails interior" thing.
It's more intriguing and impressive to me than someone who's just a "tough cookie" all around.

OK since I can't send any love to the album RAL, and since this thread is for appreciation I will mention the RAL TOUR, which in my opinion is tied for the best Stevie solo tour EVER (witht the SA one) It was the one tour where you could compare Stevie to janis Joplin. And my only view of the tour used to be Red Rocks but they really isn't a good representation of the tour. Stevie was just so danmed spontanious on that tour, mainly because of how freaking out of it she was, but I don't care. I love Stevie so out of it and mumbling and just BA BA BA BA BA in the middle of a song like freaking Dreams for no reason at all.

That really made me laugh. Stevie is SO not Joan Jett. I mean, for God's sake, Stevie is the fairy princess in the forest and Joan is a dyke in a leather jacket. But, I digress (before anyone gets their politically correct drawers in a bunch, I am a big ole homo and can use these terms).
The flip side is, I think Stevie is much more fierce (when backed into a corner) than most of us realize. I don't doubt that she could kick some butt if she needed to. Though it may have been drug induced, she did dive from the stage onto that security guard's back years ago...

I prefer the rock version, not the version that appeared on the album. The song is dark and didn't benefit from the techno-funkified mix on the record. It was much better as a guitar driven song.

About two or three years ago, I turned the New Year at, speaking of ball breaking women  - Lea Delaria's pad in NYC Lea was Wddie (Meat Loaf played it in the movie) and Dr. Scott (TIME WARP ANYONE  )- Joan played Columbia in a facical but GREAT Rocky Horror  Trust me - although very very nice nice, the both of them can whip most asses I know and/or know of and JJ is about five feet tall in heels
OF COURSE you spent a New Year's Eve with Lea Delaria and Joan Jett. I would expect no less. I am sure your outfit was fabu.
When it comes to Theatre, I'd usually rather eat a gun than step foot in a play or musical. However, I bet that would have been worth seeing.

I prefer the rock version, not the version that appeared on the album. The song is dark and didn't benefit from the techno-funkified mix on the record. It was much better as a guitar driven song.
Ooh. Is that version available for download anywhere? I don't think I've heard it.

LOL - I do not know either of them at all and still do not - but they were there and we threw it down
I got there because a friend is an actor in NYC and we were out with some people in his then play (off Broadway and you never heard of it  ) - one of them knew, I think Lea. So . . . we all got invited and there we were. I was in a brown shiny Prada Shirt and black Prada pants with my black cowboy boots and looked FAB. At one point I did have a red carnation affixed somewhere - but where I am not tellin
I will probably never forget that night.
Now LAST YEAR was the NYE party though. I was again in NYC and my friends had a HUGE party. There were Rockettes there (we did high kicks to Merman ) and then at some point after midnight I stopped kissing whomever (what was their name  ) and then the next thing I know this woman from the New York City Opera was singing IN FULL VOICE the suicide scene from Lucia. I then followed it with a slurred version of who the hell knows what (this is in a room full of theatre people mind you  ) poured myself into the car and was driven home to be followed by "Excuse me sir - WAKE UP - you are home"
Oh Well - Life is a Banquet and I am going to that same party this year
BTW - RAL rocks and I love it :wavey:

I haven't been to NYC for NYE since 1985 ! All I remember is champagne, a huge crowd in Times Square (it was still dirty and real NY then....) wearing my leather pants and doing a ton of coke. It WAS the 80's, after all. If I decide to go there this year, I am tracking your ass down, dude. :wavey:

God I can't say much but that I just love this album. It is my favorite Stevie album ( esp I Sing For the Things...how can anyone hate that song!)
My fav is If I Were You, but she didn't write that. I just think that could have been a hit. I just like it so much.
GREAT ALBUM. TOTALLY 80's but it's kinda raw and emotional.

You are on for a date my friend!!!
Why do I envision the scene from beaches where the police "escort" Ce Ce Bloom back home after the opening of her play and when she gets out of the back of the cop car she shrieks in a drunken slur "FOR THE LAST TIME I WAS NOT THE RING LEADER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"  Now which one of us would that be - Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm - as Strand sheepishly raises his hand with a look of acknowledgement

This question of mine was kind of lost amidst a long-ish post of mine. Anyone?

I just sort of assume that she recorded it with Iovine at the helm in '84 or early '85 -- at a time when he was still producing the album.
It may have been the first studio thing she recorded after "Violet & Blue."

Yeah, and Webster could bring The Rock to his knees. ;)
I <3 Chrissie Hynde. She's the kind of chick you'd just want to shoot the **** and drink a beer with. And, for some reason, I just don't think Stevie is "gritty" enough to punch a French cop and then lay in the middle of the road to avoid arrest.
Also, didn't Chrissie attack Carly Simon at a Joni Mitchell club show once because Carly was singing along too loud (in the audience)?
When I was young, I used to think "Brass in Pocket" was talking about British coins of some sort. But we all really know she meant brass knuckles!!!

I LOVE Rock A Little! It's my second favorite solo album (after TISL). Unlike most of her albums where I tend to just listen to certain songs because a lot of songs sound better live, or different versions sound better (Bella Donna especially), I listen to Rock A Little all the way through, except for I Sing For The Things (BLAH!). This album seems to sum up the coked-out buzz Stevie was living in at the time, which is actually kind of refreshing. I mean, when you look at the I Can't Wait video - Stevie wasnt trying to look all witchy there - she was just plain looking hot, that video was made to get Stevie laid, and in her cracked out bubble she probably thought it was the best idea ever. I like that we have Stevie's impulsive side documented forever.

this is the RAL thread, but i also just got Wild Heart, so, this is a very good album, as well...
Stevie's voice is very erratic, with still quite a bit of range. Which is my favorite Stevie voice. It figures, because i already knew this time period was overall my favorite voice, ie, Insider...
these will probably be my two favorite solo albums...let's see, i'm not sure there's any i don't have now! yay!
And yes, overall, i like them both better than Belladonna. though edge kicks so much ass...

I love RAL. I think it has that great 80's feel to it...yeah, sometimes some songs seem cheesy, but this album gave us No Spoken Word, HAEWAFY and Rock A Little. I love Stevie's voice on this album as well. If any of you have heard the I Sing for the Things/Gypsy demo - it is outstandingly beautiful. I think it's easy to overlook this album because of the synthesizers and sometimes corny production, but it's a great album.

Hey NIXXXED-I bought it the day it came out, too, on cassette and album. I was such a dork. I fell in love with her when Stand Back came out and loved WH but I was 12 or13 when that was out and not so obsessed to even know what day exactly that album was released. But RAL was different, I had just turned 15-all geeky and the such and totally crazy for Stevie. But even then she wasn't the hot new thing. I remember writing for my high school newspaper. I did this poll about everyone's favorite music and singers. For female vocalist no one was voting for her. I had to rig the results so that she tied for first place with ????. Ok- so great displays of fandom don't have to be great displays of integrity, too, do they?!
