Why isn't it a bigger surprise that people are voting off "Sara," of all songs?

Transfer from the closed thread:
NOW BACK THE F*** OFF OF ANGEL!!!!!
Ok, let's try to add something of an explanation for this for a change. ;)
I still think it's "veeeery, very good", don't get me wrong. But it is a weird mode for Stevie. You know the Tusk doc where she says that she set out to write something upbeat for a change because all of her songs are supposedly so serious. And still there is a certain darkness running through that I can't put my finger on.
My favourite bit is the end, that's when the guitar and the vocal start a little sparring match where they keep on spinning each other round and round. That's another classic Buckingham - Nicks dialogue. And I do think it worked very well live, you've probably heard the 11-6-1979 version with Stevie really going at it.
But yeah, I prefer the mushy stuff like the three Nicks ballads and the classic 'cock-rock (thanks David) of "Sisters Of The Moon" to it. "Angel", "Honey Hi" and "Save Me A Place" I would drop off first.

Ok can I say something. I really think the conversations and the fights should be kept to very small minimum. Not because I and I'm sure others don't like them. It has to do with how cluttered and messy the thread can get. I'm sure it'll be much much easier for Jake to count votes when he does have to pass by one of Johnny Stew's or Face of Glass's or Dissentions NOVELS. Seriously it's like you guys have never heard of the expression "short and sweet" Just a suggestion.

Darling, I voted for it because I just plain don't like it on the album. Live, it's beautiful. On Tusk? I can't stand it and always skip it. For me, the song just goes nowhere, whichever edit it is. Live is a different story because there's always something new or some little nuance that adds more flavor to it.

That's fine. I can respect that.
As usual, we have opposite opinions though... I typically find it to be fairly boring when performed live, outside of a few notable exceptions over the years.
I was happy to see it back in the set (and I still think Stevie sang it better than she ever has, even if she didn't sing it quite as well as she sang "Beautiful Child"), because it hadn't been performed in so long... but I was never someone clamoring for its return.
Either way, it still surprises me that, out of 20 songs on the album, it's the first one you're gunning for. When I could swear you've said in the past that you don't really care much for most of Christine's songs on 'Tusk.'
Ah well, to each his own... and if "Sara" goes in this first round (take 2), then it'll be the second time in a row that the best song on an album was voted off first, and another obvious example that there's just no accounting for taste. ;) :D
Meanwhile, from here on out I'll try to keep my dissertations to a minimum, per Hawkeye's very legitimate request. :)

Whenever I vote for the one that I want to leave the survivor game, I always create a separate post for it. I always try to put the round number as its header. I do not think it would be too confusing if people avoided creating long posts where they include their votes. Other than that, one should let the discussion go to wherever the posters want it to go.
But of course we could add something like "THIS POST IS NOT A VOTE" to every post that isn't related to the actual voting.
Seriously it's like you guys have never heard of the expression "short and sweet"
I have just as much right to elaborate on my thoughts and feelings as anyone does here. If anyone finds what I write a pain to read, they have all the rights to skip my post. And since I do not put my votes to my long posts, I can not see how Jacob would confuse them with the voting section of the thread.
Of course, we could always create real polls for these threads. The option is there when there's only ten songs left in each survivor. Of course, it would be nowhere near as fun, now would it? The public speculation is what makes this a hoot. ;)
Oh yeah, almost forgot: This Post Is Not A Vote. ;)

It might be Lindsey's album, in that he pushed for its production style to be progressive, off-the-wall, and a total left-turn from 'Rumours'... but, on the whole, the best songs are easily Stevie's (in my very humble opinion)... and that's what I'm voting on: The Songs. ;)

In the case of "Family Man"... while I like it considerably (and certainly considerably more than a lot of other people do), I decided that I liked all of the songs that it was up against even more. It's not like I said, "I like 'Family Man' more than other songs on the album, but I'm voting it off anyway."
'Sides, "strategery" is a comical reference to George W. Bush's mangling of the English language... and my use of the word was pointing to the fact that the whole sentence should be taken with humour. :)

I suspect you've quite misinterpreted the song. He means it, baby.
I don't think I've misinterpreted it, but obviously I have a different interpretation than others.
If I recall, Lindsey talked about either "I Know I'm Not Wrong" or "Not That Funny" in terms of having had one set of ideas when he was younger, about how life is and should be and will be, but that as you grow, you see that that's not always the case, and you don't have that kind of control.
(I'm probably mixing up more than one comment.)
And based partly on that, but mostly on the lyrics, I'm left feeling that these things... this woman who was "the dream of a lifetime," etc... and all these ideals that he had... didn't turn out to be what was true in the end.
And so it's sort of his younger self and his older self talking to each other, and the whole "Don't blame me, I know I'm not wrong" counterpoint is coming from his obstinate younger self. So it's an ironic statement, because the "older and wiser" Lindsey knows he was wrong about a lot of things... he was wrong about Stevie being the right woman for him, he was wrong that they'd spend their lives together, etc.
I think that's one of the reasons I like the song so much, because Lindsey is being so self-reflective there. He's not trying to see a situation through an observer's eyes, he's really taking stock of his own life there.
I suppose you can take the statement "I know I'm not wrong" at face-value, and feel that he meant it with absolutely no irony or sarcasm whatsoever, but that sure comes off in a rather arrogant way, if you ask me.
So I don't think he was being head-strong in that song... I really believe he was talking to himself, and working through some issues vocally (ie: giving up control over things that are not within his power), rather than simply internally.

Your interpretation is a very interesting one. You make sense. However, I dont see my interpretation as one that suggests he is arrogant and headstrong. It's more like a man who realizes that he's been wrong before and now, finally, he's doing the right thing.

"Arrogant" wasn't really the right word on my part, no. But I do think boldly stating that he knows he's not wrong, without any irony whatsoever, is a little more cock-sure than Lindsey usually comes across in his songs. (Well, at least in the ones that aren't overtly sexual. In those, the ol' boy seems quite sure of himself! ;) )
To touch on your last comment... I don't see it as him saying he was wrong before and right now, but rather that he was so positive that he was right, and now he realizes he still had a lot to learn. :)

I suppose you can take the statement "I know I'm not wrong" at face-value, and feel that he meant it with absolutely no irony or sarcasm whatsoever, but that sure comes off in a rather arrogant way, if you ask me
Lindsey arrogant!!? What a shock! But I'm not sure I would call it arrogant in this case. I see it as he telling himself, "I know I'm not wrong," as reassurance. After the breakup you may experience some doubt and there's that little voice inside that says, "but I know I'm right about this." And it's that little voice that tells you if you know you're right and being right won't save the relationship, it's time to let it go. I see no real irony there, not in the sense that I understand irony to mean. I see melancholy and reconciliation of one's actions with one's sense of reality. How many decisions do we have to make that defy one's emotions but ultimately are the right thing to do? That's what's going on there. No irony.
CarneVaca
08-19-2004, 08:07 AM
I do think boldly stating that he knows he's not wrong, without any irony whatsoever, is a little more cock-sure than Lindsey usually comes across in his songs.
Not necessarily. See my last post. Besides, if that were the case, it still wouldn't shock me. This is the man who, after all, said he likes John Lennon because Lennon could get away with being rude in his songs.

Sorry, I don't go for this kinky group thing of yours. ;)
In spite of the name of the thread, I do not vote for songs. I vote for overall tracks and performances; the main fascination for me in this line-up.
"Sara" is in my top three of the album. It doesn't matter if the ~windchildren~ have taken to it as their private property. It's still the only Nickssong that has made me cry like a baby. That's why I won't be voting it off, I'm such a bleeding wuss.
Me voting against "Sara" would be me voting against Lindsey too, if I cared for the traditional SN vs. LB war that much in threads like these. When those acoustic guitar swirls and Stevie's voice meet each other on the record, that's when I come to such ridiculous conclusions such as splitting the credit 50-50 between the two. AND, it's another side of Lindsey Buckingham that's audible to us there, a side that he rarely lets come out in his own recordings.

Oh my gosh. I feel like I'm in the twilight zone. I can't believe I have to choose between Sara and Save Me A Place (two of my favorite Tusk songs) in order to save the other. :distress:
LOL...I think if we told a random sampling of Fleetwood Mac fans that either Sara or SMAP would be voted off second (compared to some of the other songs on here), they would think that we're all off our rockers!
In voting, I sadly vote off Save Me A Place. IMHO, Lindsey shined on the White Album and Say You Will, Chris shined on Tango In The Night, and Stevie shined on Tusk. With that being said, I just cannot see voting off any of her five songs from this album second. Shoot, I don't even think they should be voted off in the first half! But once again...just my opinion. :wavey:

I'm really amazed that "Sara" and "Save Me A Place" are two of the most hated songs of this album!!! As for the tie, since the rule has traditionally been to go with the song that previously got more votes, the result still stands. Sara is out. It would be grossly unfair to change rules midstream.

Dude, I love all of Lindsey's songs on 'Tusk'... they're pure brilliance (even though I do still feel that Stevie's are stronger "songs," overall).
But "Save Me A Place"... I just don't get the appeal. Honestly.
I want to. I have tried to. But I don't get it.
What makes it stand out?
The lyrics make an ok statement, sure... but not as good of a statement as his other 'Tusk' songs.
The harmonies are nice, but they're certainly not the best harmonies he's ever had in one of his songs.
And, when compared to the rest of his 'Tusk' tracks, "Save Me A Place" has the most basic, standard production of them all. So it's not even innovative, production-wise.
So... and i'm asking honestly here... what's the appeal?

It's lovely. Very pretty harmonies, nice mellow tune, nice sentiment. What can I say? It's all subjective. But with regard to Lindsey's other Tusk songs, it's certainly a heck of a lot better than the wretched Ledge, which will get my vote as soon as the diabetic-coma-inducing Never Forget takes a hike.
And ironically, I wish I would've voted SMAP off last round.
THERE'S STILL TIME FOR A RUNOFF BETWEEN SARA AND SMAP!!!!

HAHA, you're so funny, CarneVaca. You know very well you made the exact same complaint last time. But for those of you who don't remember, here is Carne's previous statement from the aborted thread.
Nice try, Nancy, but I didn't even expect anyone to listen to me, though I was pleasantly surprised they did. Second, I didn't know the rule was to use the previous number of votes for a song to break a tie. That still seems goofy to me, but if that's the rule, that's the rule and it should stand. Since the rule wasn't changed, it would be patently unfair to do so after two rounds to manipulate the results. And you know it.
Third, and most importantly, not only had that tie round been called into question, the first round itself seemed to have been miscounted, and that more than anything made it necessary to re-do the whole thing. You can go re-read the whole thread if you per chance missed that.
Let's not indulge our taste for sour grapes, Nancy. Accept the results and move on.

I see what you're saying, but what makes it better than anything else, to the degree that someone would actually regard it as one of Lindsey's finest compositions? I just don't see how it stands out.
Maybe it's just TOO mellow for my tastes. As I've said, it's truly the pacing the kills the entire song for me.
I like the verse-lyrics, but then Lindsey starts singing the chorus so slowly, that I lose interest. :(
And, hey! I love "The Ledge"!
That song has spunk and vitality, and wit, and charm, and all the things that "Save Me A Place" is sorely lacking, in my opinion. :)
I do realize it's all subjective... after all, I am the guy who adores "When I See You Again."
But I am absolutely baffled as to how people see "SMAP" as a better, more worthy song than "Sara."
Of course, subscribing to my new theory that everything Carne and Diss say and do, is all a joke, and is only meant to get a rise out of people... then their attempts to save "SMAP" over "Sara" make total sense. ;)

Otherwise, as it happened, people just figured that it stands. And therefore it should.Don't you think changing rules in the middle of a game is unfair?

Since I was the one who posted that I thought the whole "previous votes" thing was the rule, I feel compelled to add that there was a tie in the Tango thread (post #266 for those who are interested) and the rule was implimented there as well. I get harped on about loving "When I See You Again" like nobody's business, and have been challenged to explain my appreciation of that song on far-too-numerous occasions.
So why am I not allowed to vent a little about the one Lindsey song that I truly dislike?
Heck, in the grand scheme of things, I haven't complained about "SMAP" one-third of the amount of times "WISYA" has been ripped to shreds. And that's even if you just count the comments from one or two people.
But hey, I'll shut up about "SMAP" forevermore, as long as everyone else promises to do the same in regards to "When I See You Again"... but somehow I don't see the latter happening. ;)

What's the appeal of When I See You Again, easily Stevie's worst song?
I submit that nothing anyone says about Save Me A Place is going to do anything to numb your disdain of it, just like nothing you say will numb the disdain others have for When I See You Again. Can't we just let it go? The question has been asked, it's been answered, no one agrees. End of story.

Cliff, the reason Sara got booted was because of the early ganging up on Save Me a Place, not because of Not that Funny. It would have been a better idea if people had laid off the sacred cows for the first few rounds and eliminated the truly weaker songs. Unfortunately, too many people didn't see it that way, so Sara drowned.

In my humble opinion, it's a better song. But I also like NTF a lot. Do you think NTF is inferior to things like Never Make You Cry, Brown Eyes, Never Forget and Over and Over? I like NTF better than even Beautiful Child, which I understand is a sentimental around here but I always thought it was Stevie's weakest song on the album.
Really, I think just about every Lindsey and Stevie song is better than Christine's contributions in this album, though I like about half of Chris' songs enough.

I LOVE Brown Eyes and Never Forget is okay, I don't think I would vote it off first. Like someone said earlier, the Mirage live version of NTF is so jarring that the song is kind of ruined because of it. I have to vote off what I skip over the most and NTF is #1 on that list.

The Mirage live version should have no bearing whatsoever on this vote. I meant to make that point when it was brought up before. I never even liked NTF until I bought Tusk after I had already been listening to the 1980 live version for a couple of years. The studio version is a work of art in comparison. Those dueling guitars at the end close the deal for me.
If it really is that odious to you, I can understand that. But if you're voting based on the live version, that makes no sense.
Besides, voting more strategically seems to be the way to go in this game. You would do well to switch your vote to Never Forget, if you're thinking strategically. The only songs I can conscionably vote off "Tusk" are some of the Stevie Nicks songs: Beautiful Child, Sisters of the Moon & Storms. Everything else is just too ineradicably bound up in my psychological sense of what makes Fleetwood Mac tick (or what used to make Fleetwood Mac tick).

Hey AMber, why do you capitalize the M in your name??? Enquiring minds want to know(ever since I found out what 'Rescind the Strike" means, I find myself wondering these things) :o
Over and Over is not bad...
yeah, someone else asked me about the M. It's just that usually when i'm typing I accidentally don't release the shift key fast enough after the A and before the M...It's a pinky thing. Sometimes i'm coordinated enough to do it right!

I accept full responsibility for that.
I was baffled that several people disliked "Sara" so much that they would vote against it before any one of the 19 other songs on the album (since some people were already voting against it in the very first round).
So I guess I was too vocal in getting my personal weakest-link booted off instead, and the people who like it (or dislike me), rallied against that.

Why not vote for your least fave songs?
*Gasp*
