View Full Version : How would you rank the Stevie albums?

In what order would you rate Stevie's solo albums (not including Timespace and Enchanted)?

Here is mine (in order from best to worst)-

TISL- So funky and fun and heartbreaking in places! This album has the best title track and I can listen to the whole thing without the urge to skip a song (except maybe It's Only Love) I think the albums only downfall is not including the extra lyrics at the end of POTU.
RAL- Wow! This album doesn't rock a little it rocks a lot! I love the vocals and the funky beats on songs like Sister Honey. It is crazy and in my opinion a masterpiece.
TOSOTM- Pure magic! Alice is one of my favorite songs "Better run for your life cries the mad hatter!"
BD- I love this album! Not funky enough though!
SA- I really like this album but there is no denying that it is one of Stevie's weakest.
WH- I can't get into this album at all!

That is so weird that my least favorite is your favorite.

Everyone's favorite and least favorite songs & albums always vary quite wildly around here.

I love various aspects of each of Stevie's albums, but some stand out more than others... and 'The Wild Heart' just hits me where I live, for some reason.

But sometimes 'Rock A Little' or 'Trouble In Shangri-La' occupy that top spot. I figured it was better to not have a three-way tie for #1 though. ;)

Bella Donna -There's so much to love here, from that unstoppable "E017," to those emotive lyrics I love in "Outside the Rain" and the uplifting "Think About it." And I'm a huge fan of "How Still My Love."

The Wild Heart -I hate to put it before TISL, but I just think it's incredible. I think "Stand Back" is a classic that most couldn't hate if they tried, I think "Enchanted" is among her best, and I'm forever in love with "Gate and Garden" for the passion in the vocals and the lyrics (for personal reasons).

Trouble in Shangri-La -The title track and "POTU" are definitely a couple of her very best written songs. I have problems with the production on some of the tracks, but that's very much a matter of opinion. (But I guess this whole thread is, :p ). Thematically, this album really works. I don't think anything's out of place. I can't say I'm in love with every track, but as a whole, the album is very moving and effective to me.

Rock a Little -A big reason I put this before OSOTM is that I can't help but agree with diamondsnake on "Sister Honey." "Fast like a jet plane..." "Do you understand the word pleasure?" I think she sings the hell out of this and brings it to life. I've never understood the criticisms, really. The only other track I'm truly in love with is "Talk to Me," which I just think is a heavenly 80s ditty. "HAEWAFY" is an honorable mention, if for nothing else then the heart-wrenching performance.

Other Side of the Mirror -Much of the production on this really bothers me. Many of the lyrics either seem mediocre to me or just too vague. I do love "Rooms on Fire," and have a fondness for a few others like "Juliet" and "Ooh My Love," but I don't intend to tell anyone those are my favorites of hers by any means.

And I don't have Street Angel yet.

Well in two months if I go back and look at this thread my favorites could be on the bottom of my list. My favorite songs, albums, bandmembers, etc. change every few days it seems! That must mean that it is good music, I think!

1. The Wild Heart
2. Trouble in Shangri-La
3. Bella Donna
4. The Other Side of the Mirror
5. Street Angel
6. Rock a Little

I think "Bella Donna" is probably her most consistent, enduring work. I also like its organic sound: You can tell she worked the songs out with a real band before recording them (whereas her subsequent efforts were recorded in a more piecemeal fashion). But like "Rumours," it's overly familiar. I don't know how many more times I can stand to listen to "Edge of Seventeen" or "Stop Draggin'".
"The Wild Heart," to me, is Stevie's "Tusk." It's flawed, inconsistent, at times dated... but it's also less familiar and has more to be discovered.
TISL I love because of its variety and because it has Stevie's best singing and songwriting since, well, "The Wild Heart." :)

4. Bella Donna
5. OSOTM I played the you know what out of this when it was released and years and years later I am surprised to see myself rating it in the bottom, it does not stand the test of time for me.

1. TIE: The Wild Heart and The Other Side of the Mirror. Both make me feel warm and fuzzy, which is odd in the case of TOSOTM because the heavy keyboards give it a very cold sound. WH starts off with a bang and rarely falters, IMO. Her voice is chilling and a lot of the lyrics are brilliant.

2. Trouble In Shangri-La. The title track is jaw-dropping. When I first got the album and popped it in, I was literally stunned by the song. Possibly her best lyrics ever. I'm not too keen on a few songs, but most are superb. When she's good, she's really good.

3. Bella Donna. With the exception of two tracks, it's perfect. :D Outside the Rain is one of my favorite songs and has my all-time favorite lyric in it. The title track is beautiful, as are most of the songs. I get goosepimples every time she kicks it up during the bridge in How Still My Love.

4. Rock A Little. It's grown on me a lot. A couple songs are too much for me still, but I've grown to love a lot of them.

5. Street Angel. Ugh. Absolutely putrid. Flat, monotonous, depressing.

1). Belladonna I love the country-feel, and vocally, she was in top form. And there's not a single song I skip.
2). tie - TISL and The Wild Heart Save a few (i. e. Love Changes) TISL is a stellar album. The title cut is one of my favorites. There's a few songs on TWH that are just ok (Gate and Garden), but the others make up for it.
4.) OSOTM Pretty good vocals. I adore Rooms on Fire and Ooh My Love.
5). Street Angel Obviously not her best work, but I love Blue Denim and Rose Garden.
6). Rock A Little IMO, her voice is just not good on this one.

1). Bella Donna - a classic beginning

2). The Wild Heart - much more rock, edge and the beginning of her vocal change to me

3.) Trouble in Shangri-La - like many have said, I'm not in love with every song, but I love something about each song and the good far outweighs the okay

4.) Rock a Little - I love her voice on this - even at the cheesiest moments - I love the breaks in her voice - No Spoken Word, HAEWAFY, Rock a Little are the most outstanding tracks to me

5). The Other Side of the Mirror - love the magical vibe of this album, but I feel like the production on a couple songs drags it down a bit

6). Street Angel - I like this album a lot, but in the scheme of things, something has to be last

1)TISL: it's the first of her solo CD's I've bought and I find it incredible , for its variety, actuality, emotional strength, production, vocals and the amazing, breathtaking quality in songwriting. I'm even starting to like That Made Me Stronger... :D

2)Bella Donna: her legacy, a stunning self-portrait of an eclectic and inspired artist

3) The Wild Heart - The production leaves me cold on a couple of tracks, but masterpieces like Enchanted, Beauty And The Beast and Stand Back outnumber by far the small defects.

4) Tie - Rock A Little/The Other Side of The Mirror: Iovine and Hine clearly believed in the elegiac powers of synthetizers, and I don't, although many of the songs rock, and some of the lyrics are among Stevie's best. I'd like to hear them with new mixes and orchestrations.

5)Street Angel: Her most discontinuous work, and the production is often senseless, but her voice is so beautiful and tracks like Blue Denim, Greta, and Rose Garden are classics for me.:)

I've never heard Street Angel or The Other Side of the Mirror. I'm really curious about TOSOTM, though. I love Rooms on Fire, and one or two other songs from it that I've heard. I saw it at the used CD store by my house, but ended up buying Elvis Costello instead. I may go back by there and get it.

Anyway...

1. Bella Donna & Rock a Little (tie)
2. Trouble in Shangri-La
3. The Wild Heart (a distant third...like I've said before, the only songs worth hearing from this album are on Enchanted, in much better-sounding versions).

1. Bella Donna: fantastic beginning with a perfect album. There's not a single song that I dislike in here (except for "Outside The Rain" maybe), and I think the production suits all these little gems so well. Precious stuff. :)

2. Trouble In Shangri-La: The other album of hers I consider "fantastic". The fact that it has the title track, "Planets Of The Universe" and "Fall From Grace" all in one place says it all, really.

3. The Wild Heart: Tried to follow the Bella Donna sound, and was succesful in that... I think it lacked some of the strength of the previous one, but still a great album.

4. Street Angel: Yes, there's "Love Is Like A River" and other stinkers, but "Maybe Love Will Change Your Mind", "Rose Garden" and "Blue Denim" are three strong favorites of mine.

5. The Other Side Of The Mirror: "Alice", "Juliet", "Rooms On Fire"... Although I don't enjoy the overall mood of the thing, these three songs and others totally save it. Although it includes my least favorite of hers ("Whole Lotta Trouble").

6. Rock A Little: This would be the only one I truly dislike. Ohhhhh... no, I've got problems with the production, really. Only song I like is "Has Anyone Ever Written Anything For You", and I don't think it really fits with the rest of the songs on the album. Title track is good too.

Should Timespace count? If so, it would easily be my least favorite since the 'new' tracks are simply awful (although I have to confess that I'm a fan of the 'bitch' song, "Desert Angel" is just plain terrible).

"Desert Angel" is just plain terrible.

Anyone like this song besides me? I think it is a beautiful song about war and having loved ones fighting for our country and wishing they could still be with us. I love the line "Where is my father? Where has he gone? Is this real? This war it can't be happening" and also the line "You should know how much we love you" I know that this isn't the best songwriting she has every done but I love the raw emotion of this song. I think it is my favorite closer on a Stevie album.

I love "Desert Angel," up until Stevie starts bellowing, "Operation: Desert Shield! Operation: Desert Storm!" :sorry:

Other than that part, the song is greatness... and I've actually made myself an edit of the song where I omitted those two lines.

I love "Desert Angel," up until Stevie starts bellowing, "Operation: Desert Shield! Operation: Desert Storm!"

The song has some atmosphere, and has parts where the vocal works. The words though, man...clunkaroo for the most part. And I cannot get out of my mind a comment a friend made upon hearing the song : "Did she just sing OPERATION PANTY SHIELD ???"

Of course I ranted and railed about the joke. Nonetheless, it has never left me.

I appreciate the sentiment, but not the execution. The song really is a mess, but I can handle it up until the "Operation Desert Shield" moaning. When it gets to that part, I must turn it off or suffer the consequences.

1. The Other Side Of The Mirror: I don't know why. Maybe because Rooms on Fire is the first song of Stevie's that I remember ever hearing. And I love the other songs too. Doing The Best I Can is sheer perfection. I love the whole Alice and castles sorta theme I think it has running through it.

2. Rock A Little: I love Stevie's voice on this album.

3. Bella Donna: Because it has Outside the Rain, my favourite Stevie song. I bought it on vinyl recently and listened to it all straight through...I was blown away all over again. I had gotten tired of the album but there's no doubting it's a masterpiece.

4. Street Angel: I don't know why people dislike it so much. I love most of the songs.

5. Trouble In Shangri-la: I love this album and Stevie's voice on it but I'd just rather listen to one of the above four albums first.

6. The Wild Heart: This is hard...I love this as well...hmm I can't put my finger on it but I don't like this one as much as the others despite Nightbird, If Anyone Falls and Nothing Ever Changes being some of my favourite songs.

And I love Desert Angel...I like it when she starts wailing at the end...although from now on I'll always hear Operation Panty Shield

My new favourite song is If Anyone Falls, just cause it's a brill song and I've always overlooked it in the past, and I love the video. 1.Trouble In Shangri La: What can I say Stevie came up with a collection of great songs. It is magical.

2. Bella Donna: Almost perfect. A few songs that are a little dull but mostly this album rocks.

3. The Wild Heart: This has some of her best material. I like the album but there are a few weak songs.

4. Rock A Little: I like this album but it has had to grow on me. Talk To Me is a standout.

5. The Other Side of the Mirror:- A mixed back of some good and mediocre songs. Rooms on Fire is great though.

6. Street Angel: Poor to say the least. I know hwer life wasn't going great at that time but still the material on this is pretty bad. Blue Denim and Maybe Love Will Change Your Mind are great songs though.

2. Bella Donna- There are just so Many classics on here that i love.
3. Street Angel- I don't know why this is hated so much. I love this album. LIsten to the Rain, Blue Denim, maybe Love, Destiny, Docklands, and Rose Garden are all awesome!
4. Tisl- This is another one of my favs. Too many weak songs in the middle.
5. Wild Heart- Wild Heart and RAL should have been combined into one album and get the rest of that crap off. There are only four listenable songs on WH- Stand Back, Enchanted, If Anyone Falls, and Beauty and the BEast. She only does 2 of those live now a days so whats the point.
6. RAL. UGHHHHHHHHH Four decnent songs- Talk to Me, I Can't Wait, HAEWAFY, and No Spoken Word. No a days she can only pull off HAEWAFY. SO really whats the point.

Bella Donna~ I was a teenager and this album spoke to me. I dug around my parents albums for Fleetwood Mac just so I could listen to Stevie's voice on them. They grew on me bigtime.

Wild Heart~Because it was the follow up to BD. WOW! No disapointment there!

Enchanted~Great unreleased, demos, etc...

Other Side of the Mirror~Dreamy

TISL~Stevie's back!

Rock A Little~ Go ahead Lily hit it....

Street Angel~I can't say I don't like this one because I do, it's just that it just seemed "different" but that's ok, I love all of her stuff. I'm die hard.

Last but not least~Timespace

The first five are all brilliant. Street Angel is OK, but very rarely do I feel like playing it. Timespace... I like Desert Angel but I think Sometimes it's a Bitch doesn't work... Stevie would never have written and it doesn't sound genuine or heartfelt when she sings it.

I've been listening to those songs average, i would say, 3 or 4 times a week for oh, about 10 years...It's funny, i never get sick of them for more than, oh, one night...amazing? Probably.
