Question for ledgies..
With all the demos and such here and there out and about...
Which ones, if you compare them to the final recorded versions, are actually BETTER than the final difinitive recorded versions? The demo of Save Me comes to mind for me... What say you?
Thoughts?

I agree with Smile At You. I think the RTTG demo is slightly better, if only for the layered voices, though Stevie's vocal on the album is great. I'll add The Tower, though I do like Goodbye Baby. SOTM is one of the best piano demos, though again I like the album version almost as much. I like the angry Gypsy that's done with the Heartbreakers even more than the Mirage version. And if we're including solo, I'll add Greta, Jane, Love Is, and one I just forgot.

Smile At You.
To me this demo is pure boredom. But I like the album version.

No... I also like both versions of it. They each offer something different, but, in my opinion, equally cool. :)

I actually prefer the demo version of Think About It (from the Rumours remaster) to the Bella Donna version, since it's a little more upbeat and more rock than the version on BD.

the Think About It and Planets of the Universe demos from the Rumours reissue are far superior to their final products. Especiall Planets, that demo just really kicks the ass of the final product.
But Smile At You, yes like many of you I fell in love with that angry demo and that's what my hopes were for when I heard it would be on SYW, and for like a moment i was really diaspointed but have grown to like what Lindsey did even better then the demo, but I still often listen to that demo. But the new Smile At You is great.

Ah, the 'angry' demo of "Smile At You" has a lot of more power in the performance (yes, even the vocal performance) than the released Say You Will version. I would think that's the only case... since in most of the demos, the final product is actually better.

Not Make Believe..although I adore both versions
This probably isn't a popular opinion, but the GDW demo on the Rumours re-issue is just so gorgeous. The one thing that I kinda dislike about GDW is how dark it is. Don't get me wrong, sometimes I'm in that mood. But the bit of IYEDB at the end is just gorgeous and it turns it back into a Dreams, SS styled thing.

Nope. I like them both, but the album version of Smile At You blows the demo version out of the water. Stevie really doesn't sing on the demo, she just screams a lot. I think the final version ahs some of her best vocals and the ending is just haunting. :wavey:

The piano demo of Sisters of the Moon is GOREGEOUS. One of the best things she ever recorded and MUCH better than the album verision.
I like the demo to Love Is more than the final version. The final version is just so maudlin and cheesy.
I prefer the demo to RTTG better because the dueling vocals are awesome. I was disappointed the SYW version didn't have them, they would've taken the song into another stratosphere.
Goodbye Baby on SYW is much better than the old piano demos. I love that whisper of a vocal, it's beautiful.

Also, the old Wild Heart version of Destiny is miles ahead of the awful Street Angel version. No cheesy sax.

I always look at it this way...at the time in her life when she recorded the angry version demo, she was just that... angry. You're not going to be able to match the intensity of the demo because IMO, it was totally an "in the moment" kind of thing. At any rate, I love them both. Same goes for POTU. I think in the demo version she seems kind of sad but on the TISL finished product, she sounds strong and incredibly powerful and at times, ticked off. I just think it's hard to compare a demo from years ago to the finished product. Living in the moment is a lot different than living in the past and I suppose it's all based on cirumstances surrounding her life as she's recording. I don't know...just something to think about :wavey:

That's one of the few sax performances I like, along with Nothing Ever Changes and Talk To Me. Plus the harmonies at the end of the SA version are better than any of the demos.

I agree, the RTTG demo (albeit, a crappy sounding version) is miles better than the SYW version!! I like those dueling vocals too. Wish there was a better sounding copy of it somewhere.
I love any version of Smile at You, that song just kicks a$$!!! I prefer The Tower to Goodbye Baby because I've always thought the timing was off on that version...it's off beat, and not in a good way. :distress:

We are only talking Stevie's songs....
I like the demo/alternate take of That's Enough For Me more than the original.
Same with: A certain take on You'll Never Make Me Cry (not from the reissue, another one.)
I'm still wrestling with all the takes on IKINW, they all add something extra, but they're also lacking things that make the original brilliant.
And the alternate take on Eyes of the World is quite impressive, as is Brushes.

Well, I'm not with ya here Christy:
Lindsey's guitarparts in the second half of the song still save the song for me. I never liked that demo. But those licks...whooooooooooo, they make me go

I forgot about that one! Someone posted a link to it here, some days before the Tusk reissue, and it was a really magnificent performance. I loved it... much more than the Tusk album version which I really love. :)

Gerald, I like the SYW RTTG, but the demo is greatness, I just prefer it. :)

There is a version of "Sisters of the Moon," that I think is better than the album version (which I love). It is an awesome, demo version that has extra layers of Stevie vocals and Chris harmonies. It is just fabulous!

Nah, David was just being facetious.
He has an impish sense of humour which he uses to spice up our conversations around here... but that sometimes throws people off when they're not familiar with his style. :)
