Johnny Cash
I'm currently in love with his last album, The Man Comes Around. I also love the duets he did with June Carter, especially "Jackson."

Bonnie Raitt
Love her first three albums, Bonnie Raitt, Give It Up, and Takin' My Time. The rest of her '70s stuff was kind of uneven. Until Nick of Time. That's another great one. She kind of started to stagnate a little after that, but her last couple of albums, Fundamental and Silver Lining, were fantastic.

Joni Mitchell
Hejira is my favorite, too! Followed closely by Blue, Turbulent Indigo, and Court & Spark.

Billie Holiday
Some people like her '30s recordings because her voice was still good and because of the way she interacted with the other musicians, especially Lester Young. Others like her '50s recordings because her singing shows so much emotion. I tend to gravitate toward her later stuff.

Elton John
Love his first four albums, starting with Elton John in 1970. After Honky Chateau, he started going downhill, but he really started to get schlocky after about 1976 (though not as schlocky as Billy Joel).

Big Joe Turner
I wanna see how many people have heard of this guy :)
Great blues shouter from the '40s and '50s. His biggest claim to fame is probably that he did the original version of "Shake, Rattle, & Roll."

Sting
I like Sting. Love The Police. His solo work has been uneven. Love Ten Summoner's Tales and Brand New Day.

Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers
These guys have been mentioned by others, but I love them, too. Way before I knew much about who Stevie Nicks was.

Sheryl Crow
Same goes for her. I was a big fan way before I really knew who Stevie Nicks was. Love her first two albums. The Globe Sessions was good, but it didn't blow me away. And I thought C'mon, C'mon was great.

Tina Turner
I used to be a much bigger fan of hers than I am now. I like a lot of the old Ike & Tina stuff, especially the bluesier stuff, as compiled on the CD Bold Soul Sister: The Best of the Blue Thumb Recordings. River Deep-Mountain High is another favorite. I wasn't crazy about the direction she went with her solo career. Private Dancer was decent, and so was her 1989 album Foreign Affair. After that, she went in too much of a dance/euro-pop direction for my taste.

I think that's ten :)

Do you have "The Complete Billie Holiday on Verve 1945-1959"? What a collection that is! consisting essentially of everything commercially released on Verve during that decade-&-a-half, plus rehearsing, conversation & all that extra stuff.

Modest Mouse
Album: The Moon & Antarctica
Songs: Float On, Dramamine

Back when I was in high school I had a friend who was obsessed with Modest Mouse. I was always like, hmm...not bad...but never really though anything of it. It wasn't until a month or so ago when I was watching Subterranean on MTV2 (I love that show) that I heard Float On. I'm in love with the song and I really love the new album. I'm going to have to check out some of their older stuff. I think they'd be really fun to see live. Franz Ferdinand is also my latest obsession.

Float On is amazing, it's like Modest Mouse living up to their full pop potential (not that I'm a fan of that necessarily) by doing their own spin on something like "Come On Eileen"- it's so great!!

The Franz record is AMAZING! My record company has put out both Franz & MM, and it's awfully neat to have some records that I LOOOVE to be working on.

One of the guys in Franz- Bob with the blonde hair- asked me out for a drink on Saturday night :-) If they come anywhere near you live, make a point to see them. The record is great, but nowhere near as great as they are live!

Do you have "The Complete Billie Holiday on Verve 1945-1959"? What a collection that is! consisting essentially of everything commercially released on Verve during that decade-&-a-half, plus rehearsing, conversation & all that extra stuff.

I don't have that. I think it's about 10 CDs, isn't it? Like The Complete Ella Fitzgerald Songbooks, it's one that I'd love to have, but can't come close to affording at the moment.

I do have Lady in Autumn: The Best of the Verve Years, which is a 2-CD distillation of the box set.

Rolling Stones

Love them. Best party and camping music EVER.

Album - Exile On Main Street
Songs - "Bitch", "Angie"

Tom Petty

How can you not like Tom ?

Album - Damn The Torpedoes
Songs - "Finding Out", "Refugee"

Rosanne Cash

So under-rated. A real maverick and a crack songwriter.

Album - King's Record Shop
Songs - ""Why Don't You Quit Leaving Me Alone", "Seven Year Ache", "The Wheel"

David Bowie

Don't like all of his work, but love that he keeps growing musically.

Album - Tonight (his least favorite !)
Songs - "Loving The Alien", "Changes"

Concrete Blonde

This band should have been huge.

Album - Bloodletting
Songs - "God Is A Bullet", "Days And Days"

Clint Black

Excellent writer. Hella cute too. Makes me want to pull out the boots and hat, grab a cowboy and two-step the night away.

Album - Killin' Time
Songs - "Put Yourself In My Shoes", "This Nightlife", "No Time To Kill"

Heart

Their 80's material is suspect, but they even made the most of Holly Knight's hit machine writing. It is hard to beat Ann's voice and Nancy's guitar playing.

Album - Dreamboat Annie
Songs - "Mistral Wind", "Kick It Out", "Dream Of The Archer"

Trisha Yearwood

IMO, the finest living interpretive singer (she doesn't write). Impeccable taste in material, a force of nature voice, and she never oversings. A world class sense of vocal dynamics.

Album - Everybody Knows
Songs - "Little Hercules", "The Nightingale", "Wrong Side Of Memphis"

Bon Jovi

HAHAHA. My guilty pleasure. And you all thought I was so serious. Their ballads are the worst, but I can't get enough of the party songs. The concerts kick ass, and so much fun to sing along ! Great karaoke material !

Album - Slippery When Wet
Songs - "Wanted Dead Or Alive", "Keep The Faith", "Livin' On A Prayer" (of course)

Sheryl Crow

Was getting sick of her over-exposure, media whore act, but her talents are undeniable. A powerhouse musician.

Album - Globe Sessions
Songs - "Redemption Day", "The Difficult Kind", "Safe and Sound"

Honorable Mentions - Don Henley, Dolly Parton.

(2) Janis Joplin (all of her bands--Big Brother, Full Tilt Boogie, etc.)
Album: Cheap Thrills and Pearl

(3) The Rolling Stones

Song: Paint It Black, Last Time, Can't Always Get What You Want, Brown Sugar

(4) The Who

Song: The Seeker, Won't Get Fooled Again, You Better You Bet, My Generation

(5) Jefferson Airplane
Album: Surrealistic Pillow
Song: Someone to Love, White Rabbit, Crown of Creation, Ballad of You and Me and Pooneil

(6) The Grateful Dead
Album: Live/Dead
Song: St. Stephen, Sugar Magnolia, Brown-Eyed Woman, Casey Jones

(7) Bob Dylan
Album: Blonde on Blonde
Song: Just Like a Woman, Positively Fourth Street, Subterranean Homesick Blues, Like a Rolling Stone, Things Have Changed

(8) Jimi Hendrix
Album: Are You Experienced?
Song: Voodoo Chile, Purple Haze, Manic Depression, Crosstown Traffic

(9) Simon and Garfunkel
Album: Sound of Silence
Song: Sound of Silence, I Am a Rock, Cecilia, Bridge Over Troubled Water

(10) Prince
Album: Purple Rain

I would put the Beatles in the top ten, but my best friend (The self proclaimed, biggest, Beatles fan in the world, and I would agree.) has all rights and claim to them in my world. :]

2. Nanci Griffith

Favorite Album: Little Love Affairs
Favorite Songs: "Anyone Can Be Somebody's Fool", "Ballad of Robin Winter-Smith", "Lookin' For the Time (Workin' Girl)"

Her Flyer album kicks ass!! "These Days Of Open Books" (did I get that title right) is awsome!

6. Rolling Stones
Fav. Album: Forty Licks
Fav. Songs: Miss You, Angie, Shattered

8. Natalie Merchant
Fav. Album: Live in NYC 1999
Fav. Songs: San Andreas Fault, Ophelia, Kind and Generous

9. India Arie
Fav. Album: Acoustic Soul
Fav. Songs: Beautiful, Ready for Love, Little Things

10. R.E.M.
Fav. Album: Out of Time
Fav. Songs: Losing My Religion, Shiny Happy People, Man on the Moon

"Tumbing Dice", "Gimme Shelter", "It's Only Rock n Roll"... all great songs- too many to mention- OOPS! I almost forgot "Happy" - OH, YEAH!

Natalie's "My Beloved Wife" is great. India's "Ready For Love" is spine-tingling!

REM has way too many to mention!

5. George Michael
fave album: Ladies and Gentlemen: The Best of...
fave song: Kissing a Fool

The soundtrack to my late high school/early adulthood. "Cowboys and Angels" is really good. Anyone who couldn't figure out that he was gay after that one is really clueless... He's such a great singer!

-Fiona Apple

-Sade

Both of these gals would be right up there near my top ten. Fiona's "Never Is A Promise" and "Paper Bag" are my favorites- though she's got tons.

"Your Love Is King", "Is It A Crime" and "Paradise" are freeeeking awesome!

10.Guns N Roses
Favorite Album-Use Your Illusion II
Favorite Song-Estranged

"Civil War", "Coma" and "Patience" are my favorites.

5. The Eagles - Favorite Songs- Pretty Maids All in a Row (MAD love for this song)

ME TOO!!! This is the BEST Eagles song ever, ever, ever!

Jeff Buckley
Album: Grace
Songs: Last Goodbye, Lover You Should've Come Over, Everybody Here Wants You

Jeff Buckley is PURE sex. Hot, hot, hot! That VOICE!!

2. Blondie

Album: The Hunter
Songs: Angels On The Balcony, Do The Dark, War Child, Orchid Club, For Your Eyes Only, Rifle Range and about a million others

4. Madonna

5. Eurythmics

Album: Be Yourself Tonight
Songs: Beethoven (I Love To Listen To), You Have Placed A Chill In My Heart, I Need A Man, Sweet Dreams

Blondie's Eat to the Beat album is my favorite- too many songs to mention. Erotica is Madonna's best album, with "Bad Girl" and "Deeper and Deeper" (YES!!) the best tracks. She should have never moved on to her more recent crappy style.

What can I say about Eurythmics/Annie??? Honestly, they should have been in my top ten. Savage is my favorite Eurythmics album- Annie's best song is probably "The Gift".

I also forgot to add Michelle Shocked (she's also in my top ten with Annie) and Janet Jackson (who isn't in my top ten but f**king kicks ass- who cares about her damn boob?!?!?!).

Sorry- long post! :wavey:

Finally a Mac fan who doesn't think David Byrne is a complete weirdo!

Well he is, but that's why I like him! :) One of my fave all time bands is the Thompson Twins (aka "the three haircuts", and they were quite weird on their own... ) gotta love that 80's new wave ;)

I'm going to cheat and list one more, because no one has mentioned her (I don't think):

Linda Ronstadt
Heart Like A Wheel is her best album, followed closely by Simple Dreams. Her '70s country-rock period was her best. I never cared for that Nelson Riddle stuff, or the Mexican albums.

The first Trio album was good, and so was the duet album she did with Emmylou Harris, Western Wall. So she hasn't completely abandoned the country stuff, thankfully.

1.) Heart
2.) Joni Mitchell
3.) Neil Young
4.) Linda Ronstadt
5.) Led Zeppelin
6.) Virgil Shaw (of Dieselhead)
7.) David Bowie
8.) Emmylou Harris
9.) Jim O'Rourke
10.) Radiohead

Hmmm....it looks like a lot of solo artists for me.

4. Opeth

Oh my god, Opeth is so amazing!! Saw them live here in Austin a few months ago, totally rocked my socks off. Great choice! And a good Swedish band to boot!

Concrete Blonde

This band should have been huge.

Album - Bloodletting
Songs - "God Is A Bullet", "Days And Days"

Their entire first album is spectacular. A great cover of George Harrison's "Beware Of Darkness". "Dance Along The Edge" is one of my fave CB tunes...as are "True", "Little Conversations", "Caroline", "Joey", "The Ghost Of A Texas Ladies' Man", "Walking In London", "Mexican Moon", "Jenny I Read", "Hang It Up", "Cold Part Of Town", "Still In Hollywood", and their cover of James Browns' "It's A Man's World". And their cover of Jimi Hendrix's "Little Wing" is spectacular, too.

I hear they're coming out with a new album soon (their second since their long hiatus)...with a cover of the old country hit "Ghost Riders In The Sky".
