Yeah, well, what the hell- it's another top ten list.... This time, list your top ten (or whatever) favorite artists. The only rule is you cannot list anyone who was or is a member of Fleetwood Mac. Also, list your favorite album and favorite song by each artist, please. That way I (we) can expand my musical horizons. (Ties and multiples are, of course, fun, welcomed and encouraged!)
1) Joni Mitchell Favorite album: Hejira tied with Blue Favorite songs: "For The Roses", "Blue", "Refuge of the Roads", and "Cactus Tree" 2) Heart Favorite album: Little Queen (Dog and Butterfly is close, close behind) Favorite songs: "Just the Wine", "Mistral Wind", "Dream of the Archer" and "Song of the Sea" 3) Indigo Girls Favorite album: Swamp Ophelia Favorite songs: "You Left it Up to Me", "Love's Recovery", "This Train Revisited" and "Go" 4) The Innocence Mission Favorite album: Umbrella Favorite songs: "You Chase the Light", "Umbrella", and "Happy, the End" 5) Rickie Lee Jones Favorite album: Pirates Favorite songs: "Company", "Living It Up", "Flying Cowboys", and "The Last Chance Texaco" 6) Led Zepplin Favorite album: Physical Graffiti Favorite songs: "Ten Years Gone", "The Rain Song" and "The Battle of Evermore" 7) Patti Smith Favorite album: Gone Again Favorite songs: "Revenge", "Dancing Barefoot" and "Wing" 8) Suzanne Vega Favorite album: Solitude Standing Favorite songs: "Ironbound/Fancy Poultry", "Pilgrimage" and "Gypsy" 8) Edie Brickell (and the New Bohemians) Favorite album: Ghost of a Dog Favorite songs: "The Messenger", "This Eye", and "I Do" 9) Aerosmith Favorite album: Rocks Favorite songs: "Seasons of Wither", "Kings and Queens" and "Dream On" 10) Tuck and Patti Favorite album: Love Warriors Favorite songs: "Takes My Breath Away", "Castles Made of Sand/Little Wing", and "My Romance" Honorable Mention: ALL of Linda Ronstadt's Nelson Riddle albums.... (yeah, so I'm a gay dude.... at least I didn't list Barbra- although she's close to number TWELVE!!! )I just looovveee music..... DON'T YOU??? |

In no particular order (except for number one!):
1. Bette Midler- I love everything about her. It's as if she personifies my personality and I adore her talent. She can take any song and make it her own with the first note. Favorite Album: Tie between "No Frills" and "Some People's Lives" Favorite Songs: My Eye On You, Favorite Waste of Time, Moonlight Dancing, Shiver Me Timbers, Hello In There, Marajuana, Pretty Legs and Great Big Knockers 2. Bob Dylan- The master poet. Favorite Album: Right now, it's Bootleg Series #5 "Live In '75" Favorite Songs: Buckets of Rain, I Shall Be Released, Isis, Love Minus Zero, It Takes a Train To Cry 3. Tina Turner- She can belt out a song like no other. Favorite Album: After all these years, it's still "Private Dancer" Favorite Songs: 1984, Girls, Break Every Rule, We Don't Need Another Hero, I Might Have Been Queen, Absolutely Nothing's Changed 4. Tom Petty- I don't smoke weed, but if I did, I'd love to smoke it with this dude. Favorite Album: Hard Promises Favorite Songs: Insider, Last Dance With Mary Jane, When Money Wasn't King (a truly epic song), Breakdown 5. Aimee Mann- Fantastic. I've seen her live six times and she moves me every time. Favorite Album: I'm With Stupid and the Magnolia Soundtrack Favorite Songs: Driving Sideways, Save Me, Humpty Dumpty, countless others! 6. Blondie- Debbie Harry is the definition of cool. Favorite Album: Curse of Blondie and Autoamerican Favorite Songs: Suzy and Jeffrey, Golden Rod, Rip Her to Shreds, Maria, Hello Joe, Rapture, Atomic 7. Jefferson Airplane- When they were good, they were really good. Favorite Album: Volunteers Favorite Songs: Lather, Crown of Creation, White Rabbit, pretty much anything from their heyday 8. Sheryl Crow- I think she writes great songs. One listen to "Redemption Day" and I was hooked. Favorite Album: Sheryl Crow Favorite Songs: Redmption Day, Oh Marie, Safe and Sound, Weather Channel, Love Is A Good Thing, C'mon C'mon, Mississippi, Member's Only 9. Heart- Ann Wilson has some of the best pipes around. Favorite Album: Live In Seattle because I'm digging the new songs (I can't wait until the new album comes out Tuesday!!!) Favorite Songs: Countless! 10. The Pretenders- Chrissie Hynde rocks. Cool babe. Johnny Cash
I'm currently in love with his last album, The Man Comes Around. I also love the duets he did with June Carter, especially "Jackson." Bonnie Raitt Love her first three albums, Bonnie Raitt, Give It Up, and Takin' My Time. The rest of her '70s stuff was kind of uneven. Until Nick of Time. That's another great one. She kind of started to stagnate a little after that, but her last couple of albums, Fundamental and Silver Lining, were fantastic. Joni Mitchell Hejira is my favorite, too! Followed closely by Blue, Turbulent Indigo, and Court & Spark. Billie Holiday Some people like her '30s recordings because her voice was still good and because of the way she interacted with the other musicians, especially Lester Young. Others like her '50s recordings because her singing shows so much emotion. I tend to gravitate toward her later stuff. Elton John Love his first four albums, starting with Elton John in 1970. After Honky Chateau, he started going downhill, but he really started to get schlocky after about 1976 (though not as schlocky as Billy Joel). Big Joe Turner I wanna see how many people have heard of this guy ![]() Great blues shouter from the '40s and '50s. His biggest claim to fame is probably that he did the original version of "Shake, Rattle, & Roll." Sting I like Sting. Love The Police. His solo work has been uneven. Love Ten Summoner's Tales and Brand New Day. Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers These guys have been mentioned by others, but I love them, too. Way before I knew much about who Stevie Nicks was. Sheryl Crow Same goes for her. I was a big fan way before I really knew who Stevie Nicks was. Love her first two albums. The Globe Sessions was good, but it didn't blow me away. And I thought C'mon, C'mon was great. Tina Turner I used to be a much bigger fan of hers than I am now. I like a lot of the old Ike & Tina stuff, especially the bluesier stuff, as compiled on the CD Bold Soul Sister: The Best of the Blue Thumb Recordings. River Deep-Mountain High is another favorite. I wasn't crazy about the direction she went with her solo career. Private Dancer was decent, and so was her 1989 album Foreign Affair. After that, she went in too much of a dance/euro-pop direction for my taste. I think that's ten ![]() |
