I seem to remember seeing a thread (maybe a couple of years ago) on a message board someplace where people listed ideas for a Stevie tribute album. I thought it might be cool to see who everyone would pick to cover Stevie's songs. Here's some of my choices:
Talk to Me - Melissa Etheridge
Rooms on Fire - Dolly Parton
(I can sooo see her giving this one a whole bluegrass treatment)
Sara - Dave Matthews
(I don't know why...he just seems to fit)
Bombay Sapphires - Sting
(I thought this sounded like a Sting song even before I heard Stevie said she had wanted him to sing on it)
Say You Will - Christine McVie
(another potentially obvious choice)
Dreams - Joni Mitchell
(I can picture her doing some kind of loungey jazz thing with this)
Has Anyone Ever Written Anything for You? - Bonnie Raitt
Sisters of the Moon - Sheryl Crow
Angel - Tom Petty
I Sing for the Things - Etta James

Journey - Sable on Blonde
Pink - No Spoken Word
Simon and Garfunkel - Bella Donna
Bonnie Raitt - Think About It
Tom Petty - Running Through the Garden
Sheryl Crow - Gypsy
Cat Stevens -Beautiful Child (acoustic)
Tracey Chapman - Storms
Gladys Knight - Edge of Seventeen (R & B)
Chris Isaak - Enchanted
Loreena McKennitt - Crystal
Pretenders - Wild Heart (guitar, no piano)
The Eagles - Destiny (no sax, piano only, all in vocal harmony)

Say You Will~Sheryl Crow
Everybody Finds Out~Pink

I think if Stevie were to get a tribute album done "in her honor" it'd probably be Bella Donna. So I'm going to take those songs and assign an artist(s) to cover each one. :)
Here goes, sort of my Lilith Fair lineup:
Bella Donna - Sheryl Crow
Kind Of Woman - Norah Jones
Stop Draggin' My Heart Around - Pat Benatar
Think About It - Carole King
After The Glitter Fades - "The Trio Girls": Dolly Parton, Linda Ronstadt, and Emmylou Harris.
Edge Of Seventeen - Ann Wilson
How Still My Love - Chaka Khan
Leather And Lace - Tim McGraw and Faith Hill
Outside The Rain - Martina McBride
The Highwayman - Sarah McLachlan
I think it'd sell millions! :)
Joe
Wow! I read this thread and I wanna hear it!
I can just imagine Dave Matthews doing Sara. Wow that would be awesome! Simon & Garfunkel with Bella Donna...wow again. I need a thesaurus. Hehe.

My friend and I were just talking about this stuff the other day..
I think it would be awesome if Heart did "edge of 17" i like their song "black on black". oh man that would be great, it would rock!
I don't know about the Dixie chicks covering "blue denim", "landslide'' was enough for me... Maybe if one of the others sang it and not Natalie Maines it could work out. Her voice makes me cringe.
:o
I think "stand back" covered by no doubt would rock...

I think Stevie'd freak out if she heard the suggestion. Tribute albums are NOT her thing.
But then again, I'm not Stevie, so...
1. Outside The Rain (Cyndi Lauper)
Someone told her they'd like to hear her do "Gold Dust Woman" and Cyndi said, "Aww, can't I do 'Outside The Rain' instead? So she gets the honors.
2. Edge of Seventeen (Ann Wilson of Heart)
I can hear Dreamboat Annie belting this one out.
3. Stand Back (Evanescence)
Guitar it up and you've still got a rocker.
4. Nothing Ever Changes (Pink)
Somehow, I think this'd work.
5. No Spoken Word (Bon Jovi)
They've actually done it live at one of their shows from what I've heard.
6. Has Anyone Ever Written Anything For You (Norah Jones)
I'm not a fan of this song, nor of Norah. This would be perfect for those insomnia nights.
7. Long Way To Go (Sheryl Crow)
I'm sure Sheryl has her own frame of reference for this song.
8. Maybe Love Will Change Your Mind (Rod Stewart)
Since he did "Stand Back" here's his penance.
9. Sometimes It's A Bitch (Macy Gray)
Because sometimes, SHE'S a bitch.
10. Fall From Grace (The White Stripes)
I'd like to hear Jack White do this song with the required pronoun changes. Or without. Besides, I can't put MYSELF in this record.
11. Planets Of The Universe (Michelle Branch)
We know she's a Stevie fan. This has guitar written all over it.
12. Destiny Rules (Vanessa Carlton)
Because she's also a Stevie fan and I still can't put myself in this record.
BONUS TRACK: 13. I Need To Know (Stevie Nicks)
Because we still don't have the Stevie-sung version of this song on CD.

So you'd buy a copy if I got it produced? ;) I think that track and Ann Wilson doing EO17 would be the highlights. :)
Interseting duo you've come up with on Pat and Dave. I'm trying to hear them together on songs they've done independently, and every time I "listen" they always slay each other on their own songs. Maybe you could suggest a song?
I'm more partial to Pat and am never left unimpressed when I hear her sing(putting it mildly). The most recent time was when I heard her on CMT's Crossroads with Martina McBride. It was awesome.

Last I saw of her was on the Storytellers CD or on that episode of Dharma & Greg where she sang at an airport wedding, whichever came first.
She has a pretty voice, but I still hold it against her that Stevie was always robbed of the Grammy by her or Donna Summer for years.

I just saw that episode of Dharma & Greg not too long ago. She sang "We've Only Just Begun" and it was actually not bad. She was also on "Charmed" somewhat recently. She performed "Heartbreaker" and was also pretty good. She was wearing a long black Stevie type dress! OH, and she was on the Hollywood Squares too! I have a friend who LOVES her to death and she's always saying how Pat was classically trained and sings so much better than Stevie. So I said to her, then why is she on the Hollywood Squares and not out selling records? She wasn't even in the center square!!! It's too bad that the Love Boat and Fantasy Island aren't on anymore. She could guest star with Jimmy Walker and Charo.

A little surprising that she & Stevie never wrote/recorded together. Perhaps she'd have jumped at the chance to sing on Bombay Sapphires? Beats Hollywood Squares. And On Stevie's BTM, Ann Wilson, Grace Slick, Sheryl Crow, and that Hole singer all praised Stevie; it would have been nice to hear from Pat, assuming she has a high opinion of Stevie. Who knows.

Wasn't she the one who said she couldn't believe that THAT voice was coming out of that tiny body? Anyway, I think that Pat and Stevie have a mutual respect for one another. Considering the fact that they've both pretty much come from the same "graduating class". Both had their heyday solo careers in the 80s(I think Pat's was bigger) and are still making music today(the survivors). Pat released an album last year called Go, although it didn't go very far. :D However, Stevie's career is more successful today and she has turned out to be more of what one would consider to be a rock icon. But hey, they're both doing their thing, and that's very cool in my book.

I'm pretty sure it was Stevie. Stevie said she couldn't believe that such a big voice could come out of such a tiny person (Pat). I can't remember where I saw it, (it could have been VH-1's 100 Greatest Women of Rock special) but I'm almost positive it was Stevie who said that.
Okay you guys, I have this on tape somewhere. Are you going to have to make me dig it out? I'm standing by Debbie Harry saying it about Stevie. It's like I can almost picture it in my head.

Nope, you're absolutely right. Debbie said that about Stevie, which is another reason why Debbie Harry is so freakin' cool  . I'm sure I've seen the quote on other website as well.
<-- Blondie Nerd  :wavey:
Oh but you were so absolutely right FIRST. :) Thanks for the clarification. And yea, Blondie(Debbie) is cool! :D

No marilyn manson only poses. I'd love to see detox mansion done by the queens of the stone age, with Mark Lanegan singing. (duetting with Stevie!) ( Mark Lanegan is a superb vocalist; check out Screaming Trees' Sweet Oblivion )

That's one of my favourite Stevie Nicks covers you know. I am a big fan of Ryan Adams and was thrilled to discover that. I had a thing a while back about collecting cover versions of Stevie Nicks songs. Most are terrible believe me.
Oh yes, i believe you.
I like the whiskeytown-dreams, too. Tori Amos' landslide is not very good but okay. I think I heard her do songbird, too that one's better. But still no sign of mark lanegan doing storms.:D
