Default cool find..

I was looking through all my old CDs today...ones from my childhood that I probably need to get rid of, but most likely won't because I'm a "sentimental lady" when it comes to music

anyway, I saw one from a tv show called Sabrina the Teenage Witch.
It has a bunch of groups like the Spice Girls, Sugar Ray, Robyn, Ben Folds Five, etc.
As I was reading the track listing I noticed a guy named Matthew Sweet covers Magnet and Steel.

Now, when the CD came out in 1998 I was about 10 or 11. So, basically this is the first time for me noticing that a Walter Egan song is covered on it.
In the liner notes (which I never bothered to read either..) it says Lindsey Buckingham plays lead and rhythm guitars and does backing vocals. Susanna Hoffs (the Bangles) also does back vocals.

I thought it was a cool find on a boring Friday afternoon!
11 years late though!! LOL
I'm going to have to dust this one off and give it another listen!!

That song from a 1978 album is one of the most popular things that Buckingham & Nicks did in their off hours.

Here's the sheet music.

I remember loving that song before I ever knew who LB or SN were.

By the time Gold came out, I probably knew who they were, but I didn't follow them enough to know Lindsey produced that and I loved Gold too.

Actually, in bar # 8, that E/B chord is simplistic...to sound "just like the record", you should play a Bsus4 chord. (The Doobie Bros use that same type of chord in the chorus of "Long Train Runnin'".)

so has anyone heard the Matthew Sweet version before?
I'm not particularly fond of the vocals on it, but I listen to it just for the ending guitar part...which is frackin' awesome.

Ooo...thanks for posting. I love Lindseys vocals. Raw and passionate, but strong...kind of like what he did on Walls with Tom Petty.

I remember my friend having this album when I was a kid. Sugar Ray's cover of Abra Cadabra stands out, but I have no memory of this song being on there. Why do I get the feeling my friends and I skipped over it.

Oh dear...

This is such a beautiful song to my ears.

David - I believe you posted way back when a clip featuring an a capella version of the SN/LB vocals only. If you have it, please post it again as my copy is long gone.

Also - for the newbies - here is a link to Walter Egan's Q&A on this site. Thanks again to him for doing that.

Finally, I always though S. Hoffs of The Bangles sounded very La Nickish on Eternal Flame

Is it blasphemous that after a few listens I prefer this one to the original?? Mostly for Lindsey's noticeable contribution.

LOL I bought the whole CD for the Spice Girls "Walk of Life"
I didn't remember Magnet and Steel being on there either, so I guess I'm guilty of skipping it too!

a 10 year old me didn't have great music sense yet!
but I was working on it

I still like ole Walter's version better, just seemed more genuine. He was singing to/with Stevie after all...he was (and I quote) "smitten with the kitten"

I think that's why I don't like it. He looks about 15 in the video...like...dude...she's out of your league.

Haha!
