From the Australian Financial Review:
In the Meantime. Christine McVie (Sanctuary/Shock) 7 stars: In a funny way, it's possible to take a talent like Christine McVie's for granted. Near-perfect pop. So what? It's only when you hear it again, after a long hiatus, that the bleedin' obvious becomes, er, obvious. What a voice! I've heard if from the earliest days when she was in Chicken Shack and then the surprising but supremely right move to Fleetwood Mac and the huge commercial era that followed. With her skills and talent, and presumably healthy bank balance, McVie is not going to let a dud loose on the public, and she hasn't. This is as svelte and polished as you would expect, up to and including a layer of substance behind all that pop melodicism, the Mac-ish fluid drive of the songs and pop groove matched with gently illuminated production and sparkle. At its best this recalls the Fleetwood glory years (You Are) and even in the lesser moments there is that phenomenal voice. From The Hour: September 9th, 2004 Christine McVie - (Adventure/KOCH) In the Meantime Bugs Burnett McVie decided to forego her erstwhile Fleetwood Mac bandmates on their 2003 Say You Will album and tour. Now she's turned around and made a poor man's Fleetwood Mac album. The lead-off Friend is the best track here, though the bass line echoes You Make Loving Fun. One of Fleetwood Mac's strengths was you didn't have to listen to McVie sing lead on every track. All this solo album does is prove the old axiom that the sum (Fleetwood Mac) is usually greater than its parts. |
