Well, Waddy himself said that he was mad that the EO17 intro sounded so much like the Police song Bring on the Night, so that's another instance where maybe someone who plays for Stevie is a big Sting/Police fan. Michele

For those of those who haven't heard the Richard Ashcroft songs you can look them up on youtube.com, here are the links:

Here is "Cmon People" aka "Say You Will"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vAvopGD_SP0

Here is "New York" aka "Illume"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3aKO38bPf7g

Speaking of "Edge of 17," anyone ever hear how Waddy totally ripped off the guitar riff for that song from "I wouldn't Want To Be Like You" by Alan Parsons??

Here it is:

How is musical versus lyrical plagiarism different anyway? And how can we forget how Stevie herself admitted on Storytellers that she wrote "Stand Back" to the beat of Prince's "Little Red Corvette." It seems the odds are really begining to stack up against our little prolific poet.

Hi, Louie. Here's my view: in Stevie's particular case, lyrical plagiarism can more readily be attributed to Stevie because she writes most of the words herself by herself, whereas plagiarism in instrumentation or orchestration of a Stevie Nicks song almost always should be pinned on another person or persons because Stevie doesn't orchestrate or otherwise arrange her material (except perhaps the backup vocals).

That just seems to be a legitimate borrowing of the essential chord progression -- as Stevie herself has accurately but simply put it, you can sing Stand Back while Little Red Corvette is playing & make it "work."

But because she's so prolific, the fact that there has only been one plagiarism charge out of all the songs she has written is a good sign. Even the Sara case only settled for nuisance value, not for an amount that suggested the Plaintiff was really getting a royalty percentage.

I would love to see the transcript from Stevie's deposition. Was she really formal and did she just give answers carefully tailored to the questions posed to her, like her lawyers might advise, or did she get excited and talk like she does in interviews? It was probably very interesting.

If Edgar Allan Poe and Oscar Wilde were still alive there may have been a couple more.

Actually, Edge sounds more like this Police song, released two years after the song you posted. (As pointed out above my Michele)

Gosh if the Stevie Nicks band was gonna steal, why couldn't they have ended up with a track that was stronger than the source, not weaker?!

Beethoven taught us the importance of stealing but improving on the source. I mean, d'uh.

Well I think i Like Edge much better than the police song. its too wheres bob marley when you need him.

Richard Ashcroft on the other hand is Briliant. I've enjoyed his stuff for sometime. But I also really enjoy illume and say you will.
Are there instramentals of His songs? i wanna try and sing one to the other.

Speaking as a musician, you are inspired by many things when you write a song. Sometimes you get a melody in your head and you lay it down on a track and it's totally original and sounds great. Other times you get a melody in your head and without realizing it, it's a melody you've heard already. This goes for lyrics as well. Now that police thing, well yeah, that's a little too close for comfort, but it's not like they took the entire song and copied it. It's more like the opening of the police song became the basis for a whole new song. I can't imagine Edge without that rift. But with a lot of these other instances, it really my just be that they had a song in their heads when they were writing a new song and without realizing it they wrote a new song that sounded very similar. There's actually a name for this but I can't remember what it was.

I remember one time, some years ago, I was at a party and my band was playing a recording of a song we had just written. We were really proud of it and could not wait to play it out. Well, just as it started a drunk girl walked into the room, yelled "I know this one" and started singing the words and melody of "Vacation" by the GoGo's. And she sang the entire song. We were mortified. Our song sounded nothing like Vacation but somehow she made the connection.

Someone posted this months back and I was at how similar it sounded to EO17. I had never heard that song before, but I absolutely love it now. In fact, I think I prefer it over EO17 because of the reggae feel to it. There was a demo if EO17 that had a reggae vibe to it as well that I liked, but I think The Police did it better. EO17 is still a very good song though.

As for the Richard Ashcroft songs, I hear SYW in C'mon People a little bit. However, the Illume and New York comparsion is right on without question.

Well, if u like reggae, (wich i do, but not at the expense of getting to hear songs i like the way i like them) Hopefully you caught the police reunion tour. My two best friends (who did love the police)went, and said it was rediculous because EVERY SINGLE SONG got "the REGGE TREATEMENT". they were so dissapointed, they said it was like RROOOXAaaaaaNNNE! MON! (bongos) YOU DONT GOTTA TURN ON THE REeeeeEEAAAD LIIIGGGHHT MON (moore bongos)

(JA-MIN!)Dont stand so(JA-MIN!)Dont stand so ~shot the sherrif~

I wouldn't say I'm a huge reggae fan or anything. I just really like the reggae sound on Bring On the Night and one of the demos of EO17. Unless it was a reggae concert, I don't think I would have been happy with the reunion tour either. Sounds like they went wayyy overboard.

I caught the Police show at Bonnaroo last summer. It was pretty rockin'... I did enjoy the reggae sound, but when Sting started yodeling I had to leave.
