How sad. He was such a great comedic and dramatic actor, he also seemed like a sweet guy. R.I.P.

Richard Dashut posted a bit about Robin on his Tumblr:

Quote:
Memories Of Robin Williams

Just heard of the passing of Robin Williams & am saddened to the heart. Spent a few hours with Robin & Mick back in Malibu days, between 80 and 85. Mick & I were having dinner at “I Love Sushi” one night, right next to Zuma Beach, when in walked Robin. Immediately recognizing Mick, he sat down with us & had me passing raw sea urchin through my nose in minutes. Funny & personal as he was, we ended up back at Mick’s house (The Blue Whale we called it) and his humor quickly turned to a depressing morbid diatribe, filled with dark matter. Mick spent the whole night till sunrise talking to Robin & reassuring him that things would be alright. But it was not a particularly fun night, rather one of hard listening, & even harder drinking. Still I had a deep respect for him & walked away feeling funny about life, although not in a way I intended. My deepest condolences to the Williams Family & I think I just heard my last pair of suspenders fall to the closet floor. See you in heavens comedy club Robin, I’ll make sure to tip Peter extra well for you after he seats me near the stage.

Love,

….r
This is truly such a phenomenal loss. He was a person of both incredible talent and incredible character, and he brought so much happiness to so many that it's troubling to think he was struggling so much inside. I hope he's at peace now, and may everyone who knew and loved him be comforted by the amazing legacy he left behind.

For some reason I'd recently heard when he'd gotten through rehab. I much preferred his not-so-comedic/manic work myself, like Awakenings, but like Jim Carey he could often be too intense for me to enjoy. Was he manic-depressive? I'll never touch cocaine, ever, and been offered it so many times, but I dislike how anyone behaves on it. Not sure how much of a role it specifically may have played for him. Probably felt badly about himself in relation to it I'm sure. I used to hate on myself when I couldn't quit something in the past.

I remember Jonathan Winters in a Twilight Zone (or a similar show) as the ghost of a pool hustler and was amazed. You think of Tom Hanks and Jackie Gleason and wonder how many comedians could/can be great dramatically as well... Zero Mostel in The Beard... can anyone say they really knew the very talented Mr. Williams? I'd have liked to have seen a lot more of the actor. And I liked Mork & Mindy in the late '70s (and have a beloved stuffed kangaroo named after Mindy, not that anyone should care).

So sad.

It may have been partly a case of self euthanasia in light of the Parkinson's revelation, but while I can try to respect such an awful decision part of me may never agree with it.

Sadness upon sadness...

Westboro Baptist Church planning to protest Robin Williams' funeral

http://movies.msn.com/movies/article.aspx?news=884556

Members of the controversial Westboro Baptist Church are planning an ill-advised protest at tragic actor Robin Williams' funeral over his portrayal of a gay man in The Birdcage.

The "Good Will Hunting" star passed away on Monday and while details of his funeral have not been made public, members of the church have already announced plans to picket the memorial.

A message posted on the group's official Twitter page reads: "Westboro Baptist Church Hopes To Preach In Lawful Proximity To Robin Williams' Funeral - To Warn The Living: Repent Or Likewise Perish."

However, organizers at Planting Peace have launched a fundraiser to counter the church's plans.

A message from co-founder Aaron Jackson reads: "Robin Williams played many different roles in so many people's lives, and giving back to others was at the top of that list. His appeal crossed generational boundaries. I was personally impacted when I heard of his passing. This is a small gesture to honor his legacy and the difference he made to so many.

"When the WBC announced they were protesting Robin's funeral, we felt like launching a fundraiser for a charity Robin loved would be the perfect way to honor him and counteract the message of hate and intolerance that the WBC continues to convey."

The proceeds from the fundraiser will benefit St. Jude Children's Hospital, which Williams supported during his life.
