That's exactly what I was going to write. Bitterweet Symphony was a very obvious "borrowing" situation and it was a huge hit, whereas Illume isn't. So, I don't think it'a very serious case of rip-off.

I've never heard the similiarities in Peacekeeper/Kodachrome. When SYW first came out the DJ said it sounded like Kodachrome and I was like really, I don't hear it. Kodachrome is faster and so different.

While we're on the topic of borrowing parts of songs, I'm surprised no one brought up Zeppelin. I mean, most of Stairway has been taken from various songs from the past. I think the central riff of "Whole Lotta Love" is taken from another song, as well.

What about Murrow and RamJam's black betty?

By the way, the Verve didn't steal from Jagger/Richards, but from the orchestra that did an instrumental version of the jagger/richards song. That "violin-riff" is NOT from Jagger nor Richards, but was used in an instrumental that credited those two. The fact that the Verve didnot see any money for that beautiful anthem proves that the devil still ****s on one pile.

Lindsey Buckingham's influences: Brian Wilson, John Stewart, and Ram Jam.

Meaning Andrew Loog Oldham (ex-manager of The Rolling Stones). It was supposedly his orchestral recording from the 1960s that they "quoted". Oldham may have contributed to one of the greatest rock biographies in existence (Abba: The Name Of The Game, that has some flaws in factual information but is otherwise just simply hilarious to read; a FM book like that would be a dream come true), he may have given Billy Nicholls and other artists a proper record label at the end of the '60s, but quite often he's been just a money-grabbing bastard, plain and simple.

shame on you lindsey. I'm sure he's the one that put the New York connection there. It's typical for him. Though painful for me. I thought the Illume-arrangement was one of the best things he did on Stevies songs....thief.

Oh. My. God. That opening is soooo similar!! That is... wow. I have to say this is messing with my head.

I can hear close similarities on the New York track too.

Oh Stevie... say you didn't.

I like the Verve and the two songs posted above A LOT.

i think someone in the band should come clean about this.
maybe john mcvie can shed some light on it....

rock and roll traditionally borrows from influences but this is a little too
close for comfort, as they say.

Just remembered about this thread a few weeks ago and went looking for New York by Ashcroft. Damn... It really is so very close. I'd love to hear a demo of Illume before Lindsey got to it to hear where New York got injected into the mix. I take it nothing like that's surfaced?

Not that I know of. The Verve is back together and touring though.

I don't know you guys, I think Stevie might have more to do with this copying of other artists sound than you may think. Anyone ever heard Sting's "Shape Of My Heart?" The acoustic guitar on Stevie's "Bombay Sapphires" is a virtual carbon copy of that song. Listen to it here on youtube:

So maybe there is some truth to the whole lawsuit behind "Sara?"

Stevie didn't play the guitar on Bombay Sapphires.

That lawsuit was over lyrics. The plagiarism in this instance is musical.
