How ‘Mad Men’ Landed The Beatles: All You Need Is Love (and $250,000)

In most cases, “Mad Men” is bound by the history of the era in which it takes place. But on Sunday night, a new episode of that 1960s period drama that concluded with the Beatles song “Tomorrow Never Knows” appears to have made some history of its own, marking a rare instance in which a song written and recorded by that band has been licensed for use on a television series.

Yellow Submarine at The Belcourt and Heinz Edelmann's Enduring Influence

I’m willing to bet that a lot of Scene readers are like me: They’ve spent their lives so immersed in The Beatles’ catalog and lore that they reflexively know way more about the band than they really want to. So I’m going to skip over all the Beatle-centric core of Yellow Submarine and get to the good stuff:

The Beatles Get a Second Chance, May 9, 1962

On this spring morning fifty years ago, Brian Epstein climbed the front steps and passed through the simple entrance of the EMI Recording Studios in St. John’s Wood, London, placing him on the other side of the looking glass. As a retailer, he had sold recordings made in these studios by Sir Edward Elgar, Sir Thomas Beecham, and, more recently, Cliff Richard and the Shadows. The neophyte manager of the Beatles now eagerly anticipated the possibility of watching through the control room window as his “boys” joined that exclusive club.

Performer par excellence of the ’60s and the elusive recluse of the ’70s, Lennon’s name is inextricably linked to The Beatles legend which was born 50 years ago.*The mopheads who changed the course of music and expressed their thoughts, feelings and aspirations of a generation were four different men whose musical fusion never made for a personality blend. Mark Ronson: Paul McCartney Saved Me From Drowning

Turns out Sir Paul McCartney is just as noble as his knighthood would suggest. The ex-Beatle saved producer-extraordinaire Mark Ronson from drowning in the Long Island Sound when Ronson was just a child.Apparently Ronson, who was too young to remember and heard the story from his mother, wasn't entirely convinced the tale was true. "That sounded like one of my mum's crazy stories," Ronson told Britains Live Magazine.

Book Review: Revolver: How the Beatles Reimagined Rock 'n' Roll by Robert Rodriguez

The thesis of Robert Rodriguez’s book-length analysis Revolver: How the Beatles Reimagined Rock 'n' Roll is that the Beatles Revolver was a superior album to Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band. He feels that, stripped of the hype and with a better understanding of historical contexts, the collected songs on Revolver were more innovative, more provocative, and less dependent on the technological wizardry he feels masked the creative thinness on Pepper. This is a valid if hardly new perspective, with much of the argument buried in extraneous cultural history.

The Beatles: 1963-65 (videos)

Editor's note: I had intended to do one list for the Beatles. I couldn't. Too many great songs, so I broke it up into two lists. There's a reason The Beatles are called the greatest rock band in history: they were. More hits, more album sales and a continuing success that still boggles the mind more than 40 years after they broke up.

Abbey Road on the River brings the essence of The Beatles to the Belvedere [Music]

It’s the time of year the realization that summer is here hits home, of course we know that since it is Memorial Day weekend. Being as it is Memorial Day weekend and we are in Louisville, that means one thing for certain, it’s time for Abbey Road on the River. Since 2005, Beatles inspired bands crossed rivers and oceans*in search of Louisville, to be a part of this annual festival that allows enthusiasts to let their inner Beatle show.

A Beatles fanatic caused such a stir when she took Paul, John, George and Ringo on a magical mystery tour of London and a fellow fan convinced her to wave goodbye to them.

Snoopy's Beatles Classiks On Toys

Does what it says on the tin: Beatles songs played only on toy instruments. You may find this charming, or cloying and annoying. Maybe both. I actually have another "Snoopy's Classiks On Toys" album by the same culprits behind this, an all-instrumental*Christmas album, but I haven't posted it here - it's kinda bland. Nothing like having the occasional off-key moppets screeching, as this one does,to wake things up.
