Beatles tribute brings psychedelia to TCU Place

It was the night the symphony got psychedelic, classical, magical, mysterious and then - ended in a dance party. On Saturday night, a sold-out crowd of Saskatoon music lovers came together at TCU Place to pay tribute to the music of the Beatles in a surreal, intergenerational happening that paid homage to one of the greatest rock bands of all time. The excitement wasn't for the Beatles themselves, but a group of tribute artists who have their act down to a science. The exciting concert - complete with three costume changes - was occasionally campy but always incredible. The globe-trotting members of the Los Angeles-based Classical Mystery Tour, backed by Saskatoon's Symphony Orchestra, performed the songs of the Beatles as they were recorded, with live musicians acting as dead-ringer doppelgangers of a subdued John Lennon (David Leon), handsome George Harrison (John Brosnan), a cheeky Paul McCartney (Paul Lawson) and a quirky Ringo Starr (Joe Bologna).

In new interview, Paul McCartney says: ‘I didn’t expect to be singing and playing at the level I am now’

Paul McCartney met with the world media this week to talk about his new album Kisses On The Bottom. Here are some highlights from that webstream, including his thoughts on playing with Stevie Wonder again, on returning to the songs of his youth, and on becoming one of rock’s elder statesmen.

REVIEW: Rain hits all the right notes in Beatles tribute

Tribute bands are nothing new, nor are they particularly unique. In fact, I'm sure that on any given Friday night here in St. Louis you could drive around and find some local musicians performing exact song facsimiles of the artists they love.Tribute bands are like lo-cal substitutes of your favorite foods, and if you can't have exactly what you want, a little "I Can't Believe It's Not Van Halen" will do in a pinch.Perhaps nobody does the tribute thing better than Rain: A Tribute to the Beatles. The group was in St. Louis for two shows last Friday and Saturday at the Fox Theatre.Rain has performed in many incarnations for years and even enjoyed a recent successful run on Broadway (the group is an official offshoot of the notorious Broadway show "Beatlemania").

Ringo Starr is back, but not better in ‘2012

Back in 1973, beloved ex-Beatle drummer Ringo Starr released “Ringo,” which featured appearances from all of his former bandmates and several members of his eventual All-Starr band, and which remains the signal work of his solo career. From its title down, “Ringo 2012” is meant to induce nostalgia for “Ringo” and for Ringo, a musician of limited range and endless charm who doesn’t have to do much except show up, pound the skins a little and wink knowingly at his audience, which is pretty much what happens. Despite the throwback album title, you can guess which era Starr is really nostalgic for, and it’s not the early 70s.

20 Essential Facts About the Gibson J-200

Ask a guitarist to name the ultimate Gibson acoustic, and many will reply – it’s the J-200. Elegant and flamboyantly curvaceous even by Gibson’s top-line standards, the J-200 has found fame in the hands of numerous legends: Elvis Presley, John Lennon, Pete Townshend, Bob Dylan, George Harrison, Jimmy Page, Neil Young and The Edge, to name but a few. Heck, even kids’ TV cowboy Rex Traylor played a J-200.The J-200 entered production in 1937, and continues to this day as one of the most-desirable guitars in history. The J-200 is known as the “king of the flat-tops” for good reason.

Paul McCartney: The Family Way (Soundtrack)

August 1966 saw the Beatles deliver what would be their final live performance. Shortly thereafter the Fab Four took a break of sorts—John Lennon flew to Spain to star in How I Won The War (Ringo flew over later to lend support), George Harrison traveled to India and, somewhere in all of this, Paul McCartney worked with George Martin on the soundtrack to The Family Way. Based on the 1963 play by Bill Naughton, All In Good Time, the Roy Boulting-directed picture starred John Mills, Hayley Mills, and Hywel Bennett. It is the story of two newlyweds who have a difficult time starting their new life as the real world seems only too happy to continue intruding.

The digital revolution was supposed to do away with a lot of fusty old relics. Mystical Weapons, a band that has only played five shows so far, is significantly adding to its résumé this weekend with engagements tonight and tomorrow at The Kitchen. But the band is comprised of two members who cumulatively have played thousands of shows: Sean Lennon (Ghost of a Saber Tooth Tiger, Plastic Ono Band) and Greg Saunier (Deerhoof), alongside video artist Martha Colburn. The band feels seasoned—a barrage of noise, a flaying drummer, and a hallucinatory display of improvisational video projections.Interview sat down with Saunier, who offered the history of the band, some heartfelt remarks, and his boasting love of improvisation and collaboration.

The Beatles ‘Here Comes The Sun’: Lost Solo Discovered

Here comes the Son.Dhani Harrison, the son of George (the late and great Beatles guitarist) visited Abbey Road studio with long-time Beatles producer George Martin and his son, Giles *to discover something sacred. Deep in the master tracks of “Here Comes The Sun” from 1969′s Abbey Road, Dhani stumbles upon a lost solo from his father’s ballad. It completely changes the texture of the song, not to mention how freakin’ cool it is.
It’s chilling, but doesn’t compare to the moment when George Martin turns to Dhani and says, “You’re like your father.

Paul gets back to where he once belonged

When you consider who Paul McCartney might be jealous of, the list seems rather short. Nelson Mandela? Mick Jagger? God? He doesn’t have a lot of rivals in the most-beloved, putting-smiles-on-people’s-faces-for-50-years category. So the answer’s a bit of a shock, because it turns out that the person Sir Paul is fretting over is Rod Stewart.Yes, the king of tight pants and young wives, that Rod Stewart. It seems that for years McCartney has wanted to record an album of standards, but each time he thought about it, he backed away, because you-know-who had been there first.“It’s difficult when you use old songs, like Cheek to Cheek or The Way You Look Tonight,” said McCartney, talking to reporters last week in London. “Rod Stewart’s done them all. That’s really why I didn’t do the album – I though, Rod’s already done all the songs!”

8 Videos to Commemorate The Beatles' Final Concert, 43 Years Later

"January 30" means a lot of different things to a lot of different people. In 1649, Charles I of England marked the date by getting his head lopped off by angry parliamentarians. On the same day in 1882, Franklin Delano Roosevelt was born. Exactly 51 years later, Adolf Hitler was sworn in as chancellor. And on January 30, 1969, some British rock band played its last concert on some rooftop in some part of London. There were four guys in the band, we think. One of the songwriters was from Liverpool. They might have done a show in Hamburg once or twice. Oh, and the group also had this peculiar affinity for never-ending pasturage of soft, red fruit with seed-studded façades....

NAMM 2012: John Lennon Educational Tour Bus celebrates 15 years

Anyone who’s attended the NAMM Show in the last several years has seen the big blue bus that settles in for the four days of the show in front of the Anaheim Convention Center. It’s the John Lennon Educational Tour Bus, a state of the art, non profit rolling recording studio and HD production hub with a sole altruistic purpose: to bring free, hands-on music education to students across the nation. This year the bus celebrated its 15th anniversary at the NAMM Show and we caught up with bus co-founder and executive director Brian Rothschild to learn more about the bus and the technology within.

Ringo Starr stays positive on 17th solo album 'Ringo 2012'

BEVERLY HILLS – "This is an anthem of peace and love," Ringo Starr sings with irony-free fervor on the opening track of his 17th solo album. It's a fitting sentiment from the celebrated drummer who flashes a peace sign at the click of a camera shutter and wears the hippie-era mantra like a second skin. Sometimes literally. Today, lounging on the patio of his Beverly Hills Hotel suite, he's sporting a "peace and love" T-shirt as part of a natty ensemble that's casual chic from the shades and earrings to the black-and-white high tops.

The Eugene Ballet Company comes to Salem on Saturday with "All You Need Is Love," based on The Beatles' music, and "Concerto Grosso," inspired by the late Oregon composer Ernest Bloch.Choreographer Toni Pimble said the 18 dance pieces in The Beatles set will range from poignant ("Eleanor Rigby") to "pure crazy dance" ("Why Don't We Do It in the Road").The show will be the season's final in Salem. If there's sufficient interest —*by audiences and major donors — the company may offer more performances and student outreach in Salem next year, Pimble said.

The 10 Best Beatles Solo Albums

The Beatles were bigger than the sum of their parts, but those parts were still pretty amazing: John Lennon’s blunt, personal lyrics, Paul McCartney’s powerhouse vocals and memorable bass lines, George Harrison’s legendary lead guitar work and Ringo Starr’s thumping, solid drums.Tied together with now-legendary producer George Martin, the group made some of the most beloved music of the ’60s. To celebrate the release of Ringo Starr’s new album, Ringo 2012, we’ll take a look the best solo accomplishments from the Fab Four.

Photo: The shot before 'Abbey Road'

Making the rounds on Facebook, is something that intrigues me more than the usual viral video of the day.Perhaps the most iconic image by The Beatles, is the four walking across 'Abbey Road." Unseen by many, the site fstoppers.com posted the photo taken prior to the shot that we all have come to know and love. They were oblivious to the importance of the image which is about to be captured. Moments later, the cover of Abbey Road was made and sealed into history.

Composer explores origins of Beatles songs

Composer and producer Scott Freiman ’84 used audio and video material from the Beatles, which he has collected over the course of several years, to analyze the origin and evolution of a hit Beatles song at an Ezra Stiles College master’s tea Monday night.About 50 students and faculty members attended Freiman’s hour-long multimedia presentation about “Strawberry Fields Forever,” a Beatles song released in 1966. In his presentation, which featured early versions of Beatles songs, Freiman said the Beatles’ willingness to experiment with their music was instrumental in their achievement of extreme popularity.“What makes the Beatles so pertinent to the evolution of music is that they liked breaking the rules and constantly looking for new sounds,” Freiman said.

Paul McCartney, Kisses on the Bottom, CD review

Paul McCartney abandons the guitar and pays homage to the music of his youth.John Lennon famously disdained Paul McCartney’s music hall tendencies as “nice little folk songs for the grannies to dig”. But the Beatles’ appeal owed as much to solid roots in Tin Pan Alley tunemanship as rock bite and experimentalism, lessons in classic song structure embedded in them from their parent’s generation. For his 35th post-Beatles album (counting Wings, classical, soundtrack and electronic works), McCartney pays homage to songs he first heard his father play on the family piano. The mood is of warm and cosy nostalgia, laced with the qualities of magic and emotion familiar from McCartney’s own works of whimsy. He loves this material, and it shows.

Gimme Five: Ringo Starr singing songs by the Beatles

As with the decades-old hit solo album for which it’s named, Ringo Starr’s forthcoming Ringo 2012 includes an array of name guest stars. Unfortunately, unlike 1973′s Ringo, none of those friendly assists come from his fellow ex-Beatles. Joe Walsh, Dave Stewart and Kenny Wayne Shepherd are fine, and all. But the truth is, the combination of Starr and material written by Paul McCartney, John Lennon and George Harrison has provided Ringo with many (some might say most) of his career highlights. Here’s our take on the Top 5 — with five more honorable mentions. We’ve left off, but only reluctantly, songs written by Starr or others that simply featured fellow Beatles — namely, “King of Broken Hearts” with Harrison from 1998′s Vertical Man; 1960s-era Beatles cover songs like “Matchbox” and “Act Naturally,” which hit for Carl Perkins and Buck Owens, respectively; Ringo’s fun 1974 take on the Platters’ “Only You” with Lennon; or the terrific “Walk With You” with McCartney from Y Not in 2010.

50 years on from the Beatles first real gig in Manchester - and an old poster could be worth £10k

Their name is inextricably linked with that other city Liverpool. But the Beatles were regular visitors to Manchester too, and this week marks the 50th anniversary of their first proper professional gig here, writes Paul Taylor. Pauline Clegg remembers well how Ringo Starr liked his fried eggs...flipped over onto the yolk. She remembers chatting with a young John Lennon, and thinking that he found the business of being a rising pop star “quite daft”. “They were ordinary lads, dead cheeky. John was fascinating to talk to,” recalls Pauline, known affectionately to the Beatles as “Mrs Cloggie”.

Drummer on digital music: 'If you made a record, I’d probably pick out tracks that I like and download that'.Ringo Starr will never write a book about his life, he insisted during a "Town Hall" broadcast live yesterday on SiriusXM from the Troubadour in West Hollywood, Calif. "I've been asked to write an autobiography of myself, but they really only want those eight years," he said with a laugh, referring to his time in the Beatles. "And I say, 'But there are 10 volumes before we get to that, and 20 afterwards.'"
