Default Buckinghams on Host Committee for L. A. Modernism Show

April 22, 2015

Los Angeles style is often beachy and hipster, but the region also has an affinity for modern flair — which can be found at this weekend’s Los Angeles Modernism Show and Sale.

Now in its 28th year, the show is filled with sales, parties and a fundraiser (again benefiting P.S. Arts, a nationally recognized arts education program serving more than 20,000 students in Central and Southern California). This year’s event at 3Labs in Culver City — in the Hayden Tract Arts District — is organized by Dolphin Promotions. It will include furniture, art and accessories, among other items.

“(Modernism) seems to strike a collective nerve with a whole generation of new buyers,” said Dennis Boses of Off the Wall Antiques in Los Angeles, who will be at the show/sale. He brings select pieces from his gallery to this event and a similar one held every February in Palm Springs. “Ones who may not respond to antiques in general feel a sense of freshness and sophistication in mid-century modernist designs,” he continued.

Although everything modern is at the center of the L.A. and Palm Springs shows, they differ slightly, he said, with the latter concentrating on mid-century modern design.

“The Los Angeles show covers a bit more ground. It seems the audience is more varied, and the merchandise reflects their tastes. We try to approach each show with a fresh perspective,” Boses said. “Our success, be it at Palm Springs or Los Angeles, is based on trying to have the most unique items that differ from all the other sellers. If you can present a memorable booth, the audience will respond.”

The L.A. show will feature more than 40 exhibitors showcasing decorative and fine arts from all of the 20th century’s design movements.

There are returning exhibitors like L.A.’s Reform Gallery, Porter & Plunk of Palm Springs, and London’s Didier Antiques. But there also will be fresh items from debuting presenters like Pierre Anthony Galleries of New York/Palm Beach, Aaron Mapp and Antiques & Modern Design of Miami, and Ursus Books of New York.

“The modernism shows are where the best pieces from some of the top dealers in the nation can be seen in person,” said Nick Batchelor of Archive Laguna.

But the event isn’t just about buying, it’s also about giving back. The opening night party will raise awareness for the need to improve children’s lives through the arts while raising money for P.S. Arts. There will be plenty of star power behind the effort. The host committee for the preview party includes P.S. Arts supporters Maria and Bill Bell, Julie Bowen, Kristen and Lindsey Buckingham, Amanda and Shepard Fairey, and Lisa Kudrow and Michel Stern, to name a few. It also offers an early chance to purchase items. Tickets range from $150 to $500.

“We have a partnership because we both support the artists and designers and people who make contributions to society through their creativity,” said Kristen Paglia, P.S. Arts chief executive officer.

P.S. Arts has benefited from the relationship for years — first with the Los Angeles Antiques Show and now the Los Angeles Modernism Show and Sale — to the tune of $600,000. That allows children to participate in the organization, as a class costs $250 a year.

“What we also want to do is show P.S. Arts students that they, too, can be part of the creative community of Los Angeles and California,” Paglia said. “One in 10 jobs in California is related to the arts and the ratio is 1 in 7 for Los Angeles County. We want children to see that the arts not only is an extra, beyond a lovely display of expression, but also can be a way to make a living and add to the economy.”

Derick Sanchez is one of those students. He created the artwork on the opening night party invitations. The second-grader and his family will be guests for the evening.

Reform Gallery owner Gerard O’Brien has been involved with the show/sale since 2003 and looks forward to it each year. The father also likes the idea of introducing children to the arts and reinforcing their importance whenever possible. “I like being at the show/sale because I believe in the tactile interaction with clients, and the P.S. Arts patrons are an active and engaged clientele,” he said.

Reform Gallery will spotlight postwar California pieces and an appearance by Jacqueline Suskin, whose poetry readings and on-demand poem creations were recently featured in the Melrose Avenue gallery.

The fun continues through the weekend. At 1 p.m. Saturday, an appearance, lecture and book signing is scheduled to celebrate the upcoming release of “An Eames Anthology: Articles, Film Scripts, Interviews, Letters, Notes, and Speeches” by Charles Eames and Ray Eames and edited by Daniel Ostroff. The book contains writings of the revered American architects and designers, illuminating their marriage and professional partnership of 50 years. Ostroff will lecture and conduct a Q&A session.
