I like the nominations (limited Passion, no Birth ) except for the exclusion of La chiavi di casa from the best foreign-language movie category ... that's life.

The race for best actress should be interesting, I hope it will go to Catalina Sandino Moreno or especially to Imelda Staunton who's just incredible but that would request some courage from Academy voters so I doubt it will happen.

For some of the others, I hope:
Best movie: The Aviator
Best director: Mike Leigh or Scorsese (he has to win sooner or later)
Best actor: Johnny Depp
Best supporting actress: Cate Blanchett
Best supporting actor: Alan Alda
Best foreign-language film-The sea Inside
Best cinematography- Zhao Xiaoding (House Of Flying Daggers)
Best art direction: Dante Ferretti and Francesca Lo Schiavo (The Aviator)

Even if probably the Oscar night wouldn't go exactly in my direction

Romy

I love, love, love Kate Winslet. I think she's terrific and beautiful to boot. Plus, she's fiery. Too bad she won't win.....this is her fourth nomination.

I also adore Cate Blanchett. I've been waiting for her to win an Oscar, so hopefully, this will be her year.

great. I like the blanchett, think the winslet is overrated. I don't hate her though, contrary to what has been said...

I like Winslet and Blanchett. Winslet has that classic beauty like an old time film star or a porcelain doll. Loved her in Eternal Sunshine.

I don't think he did. His scene about the "blueprints" was enough to get him a Razzie, IMO.

To think that he was chosen over Liam Neeson is incomprehensible to me.

I read an article that said his performance was more the product of the director's cutting and vision than anything else. Not saying that is true, but...

They said the same thing about Gangs of New York.

I love her to pieces, but Madsen is my gal.

Don't mention Delpy! I'm still mourning the fact that they passed her over for Audrey Tatou in The Da Vinci Code!

I thought he was nothing short of phenomenal. No director can edit a performance to make it any better, IMO, and while I watched Neeson, I forgot that I was watching an actor. He was Kinsey.

Lux - I agree Cate is fab.

Also, I also LOVED Taxi Driver ( http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0075314/...c=1;ft=20;fm=1 ) , though it was hard to watch because it was blisteringly harsh. But, therein is MS' brilliance. He knows how to portray the emotion so well. I mean look at The Age of Innocence ( http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0106226/...c=1;ft=20;fm=1 ) - in which he semingly effortlessly captured the beauty of that era while also humorously and tragically noting the ugly things like the hypocrisy of that era as well. I also think "Gangs of New York," ( http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0217505/...c=1;ft=21;fm=1 )while not my fav. film, also seemingly effortless portrayed this same thing.

So, I think MS will win for his body of work - while not really fair, it happens

Finally, he ususally has Mt Rushmore for a cast doesn't he AND he brings out the best in ALL of them IMO

Almost all I have seen speak of Leo D. that have worked with him say his talent if the real deal He has a good body of work (some not as good as others but on average good) IMO and I think he is a talent. Will he ever win ( ) - this year I am unsure. He is VERY popular amongst actors. But Jamie Foxx is a fav. So, who knows!!! IMO ANY of the nominees could win, save perhaps Eastwood (is he in this category? ) - and I would be okay with that.

I must see this. My hair stylist has a photo of her daughter with Liam in her salon, I'll have to ask her about it next time I'm there.

I really enjoyed DiCaprio in Gangs. He actually looked like a man and he was not cloying. But I'm a sap and I even liked him in Titanic. I haven't seen The Aviator though either. Why the hell am I commenting then?
