First off, I too was a bit surprised when Marc (and then Lindsey) slagged off the Welch era. Only a bit though. I'll explain about that in a moment. But firstly, I did find it amusing that Lindsey said he had Then Play On and Kiln House because believe it or not those are the two pre-Buckingham Nicks Fleetwood Mac albums in my collection. So that was kinda cool to me.

Now as to why I wasn't totally surprised about Lindsey kind of agreeing with Maron about the Bob Welch years was that besides "Hypnotized" I don't think Lindsey has touched a Welch song on stage. He's done some Green tunes, some Kirwan stuff and whatnot. And I even remember reading something about how he produced Welch's solo "Sentimental Lady" recording as something of a "favor" (most likely to Mick). I just think for whatever reason, Bob's music perhaps just never resonated with Lindsey. Or maybe it was Bob himself. Who knows. It was a bit surprisingly though because Lindsey is usually very magnanimous, even holding his tongue on Ms. Stephanie Nicks much more than he probably has to.

I also must say I found it funny that Maron talked about Lindsey doing "dance music." I knew what he meant - he was speaking of the very '80s, very electronic Go Insane period, but I had just never heard it described that way. But I suppose the description isn't totally off base. A lot of those songs would likely work better in a club atmosphere than pretty much anything else Lindsey has ever released. All this said, I must say I love Go Insane and think pretty much every era of Lindsey's career has stuff that I highly recommend. And it looks like this new album is gonna provide more.

I agree with the Welch snub. Those albums sold enough to keep them going. And for Lindsey to use sales "suddenly" to describe someone's art is really bothersome to me. Stick with what you know, "making art and music". Plus, show a little respect.

Welch had some fantastic lyrics and atmospheres. He also talked them into moving to Los Angeles. That's HUGE.

I love how Go Insane is thought of as dance music. But I see it.

Interesting post David. Never knew about Lindsey saying he wasn't comfortable singing Bob's stuff. But it does make sense. I also see what you mean about "zone" songs. Songs like "Hypnotized" and "Sara" really do come off best sitting late at night with a pair of headphones on.

I do want to point out that despite what I myself may have made it sound like, I quite like a bit of Welch's work. However, I probably wouldn't even say he's in the top 5 as far as songwriters in Fleetwood Mac. I'd easily put Buckingham, McVie, Kirwan, Green and Nicks above him at the very least.

Oh and also, it's been interesting to hear from Lindsey on the podcast and then from you on here that Lindsey is actually a Peter Green fan. I always figured he respected him as the founder of his group and for his role in music, but was never sure if he actually liked the music. Seems like he does.

Neil Finn did a fine job singing it and I was so disappointed the song was dropped by the time I saw FM. Lindsey sang it very well, also. I agree that it would definitely be insane if Fleetwood Mac ever played "Sentimental Lady" again. But just like "Hypnotized" is, I'm not sure I could see that song working in a live arena setting.

About the new album, I'll admit the first song he released for it didn't excite me big time. It still might grow on me, but as of now it's not a favorite of mine. In fact, I can't remember the name of it now off hand. However, the second single, "On the Wrong Side" really go me going. It's probably, sound-wise the most Tusk-ish thing he's done since the Tusk album. Also the song came as a surprise to me, cuz I figured it was a cover of a song of the same name that was on the soundtrack to the film With Honors.

This kind of surprised me too. I had the same impression of Lindsey's thoughts on Peter as you did previously and was surprised to hear him speak of Peter and the very early Mac music as more of a fan. To even name drop albums really surprised me!

Unrelated, I'd love to sit with Lindsey and watch a recording of 2018-19 show. I actually think that would be a lot of fun. The passive aggressive comments would be off the rails.
