Am I the only one that noticed this.......I don't think Sly was supposed to walk off when he did. The other musicians seemed to be looking around at each other when and after he did that. Strange!? Of course, Sly hasn't performed in 19 years, so I am guessing that he didn't want to do this show either. Although, why do it, if you aren't going to do it right.

He had a cold. Poor baby. He lost his voice a few years ago and couldn't sing for a long time. He's been plagued with vocal issues, and has to be careful. He still sang the living' FRICK outta YTOM.

He always sings YTOM like that...that extra part is awesome, scripted or not.

Also, just because you CAN get all those various people on stage to sing....doesn't mean you should. Aaand....someone kill me if I EVER have to listen to Fantasia scream again. Thanks.

Fantasia...man....she's crazy. I hope she gets some of Kelly's success..she can sing...I like that wild singing.

Adam Levine...he is ok but not for soul singing...LOL. He's quite understated.

Steve Tyler...he's a good performer...love him or hate him...he can perform...but what was that? He did like one note.

SLY! LORD! Love the 'hawk...another one who's brain hit the dust with all those drugs.
Like Fantasia and when did Adam Levine get so hot.

but to me, that whole "thing" was a big bust...

Sly!! Love him, but that was lame...Robert Randolph rocks my world. Did ya notice Randy Jackson from American Idol back there on bass? He and that guy whose name I can't remember were taking turns, both playing bass....dammit, what's his name? He was in Chic! Le Freak!

Edit: Just googled - Nile Rodgers!!

yeah, you're right, I just feel like it loses a little bit of it's power after you hear it at every award's show the exact same way. I'm not knocking it, just making an observation. I couldn't love Keith any more than I do.

Sly and the Family Stone would've been great without the special guest crap IMO! I must be in the minority, but I hate when special guests play with a legend, just waters down the whole celebration of musical genius.

As for Sly himself, He is even more a recluse than W.Axl Rose is...As hard as that is to believe. He used to never show up for shows when he was at the top of the funk game in the 70's, So much that there is a popular saying: "Sly Stone even makes Axl look more reliable"

Nile Rogers. He does a lot of interviews about music and he is really with it. I like him-he comes off very personable and with it.

That was a train wreck tho...nice idea but when the star is totally just NOT THERE then there is no point.

Yes, everyone did look confused.

this was discussed at lengths on another board, he did not want to take part in this show...He did so only to celebrate his music, not to kiss up to the Grummie people FINALLY validating his legacy!!!

More power to ya Sly!!!

for awhile a few years ago it was feared his voice may not return to the singing voice he possesses. Glad to see he overcame his problems (And yes, he puts on one helluva show live!)

I've never bought the idea of Jay Z as an artist. He smells like the shiny plastic you find in storefronts.

And this blending with Linkin Park (who seems off tonight, like everyone else) and Paul - wtf?

did they practice the harmonies at ALL?

and I hate how they are using Coretta King's death as a launching point of speeches and performances - it sickens me how they capitalize on the deaths of great ones

Okay, this is so cool: Jay-Z, Paul, and that other guy--Linkin Park dude. "Yesterday" was AWESOME! LOVED IT! It was different. What is up with Jay-Z and the John Lennon Shirt? Interesting.

vibrato in singing, but nowadays it is overused to the point it sounds like someone using vibrato has squeezed a weasel in their hands (Alot of pop singers, Especially female pop singers) instead of using power from their vocal chords (ie-Steve Perry & Micheal McDonald)
