On the other hand.....

"Bella Donna" is sheer greatness. I happen to like "Thousand Days". "Sister Honey" is kinda .

I hafta agree with you there. Hello Stevie?!?!? Rivers end in the sea- remember "Crystal"????

Oy.
THey (the words) do tell a story, (Silver Girl) but they are much uglier and stupider - The song you posted sounds coherent and pretty within itself, to me. No, it doesn't mean much, just imagery - but I'd rather have that then stevie laying out clunky words to tell a story. Plus, "and as all this comes to an end, so go the lillies of the valley" kind of makes sense to me... Anyway, most of her lyrics kind of suck, so it's alright... I like Bella Donna, too, but it's not for the lyrics, I can tell you that much.

Such a beautiful melody. Such a poor choice of words.
I love that verse!!!

I should've known that a thread about Stevie's bad lyrics would be a long one in no time at all!

And y'all need to lay off "Sister Honey."

Anyway, I've always hated this part of "Thousand Days." Well, I'm not wild about the whole song, anyway, but...

"The closest you've ever come to me
Was to help me up the stairs
You stood in the middle of the stairway
You nearly dragged me up the stairs"

I thought I was the only one who didn't particularly like that! It's not that it's all that unattractive to me, I just don't see why braiding and unbraiding someone's hair is so monumental and meaningful.

Oh, and the chorus of "Races are Run" isn't all that bad, but it sounds too conservative Republican for me, like some people are just screwed and that's the way it is whereas others are destined to do well.

"Races are run
Some people win
Some people always have to lose"

I dunno, either, but it sure is to stevie, she's has quite a few songs which mention her hair, or are titled Golden Braid , etc. Especially considering, um, it's hair? I don't know about you, but I haven't written any songs about my hair...

I haven't either. But, then again, I like using stethoscopes, so it occurred to me that I have no room to talk! And I have to admit that I've written poems in which I've mentioned other people's hair, though it was never the main point of the poem or anything.

But I think "Gold and Braid" is a kick-ass song even if I don't quite get the wonder of styling hair.

I like both songs. Doesn't mean the lyrics aren't stupid...

I knew this thread will fill up in a flash. And that it would soon turn into a few skirmishes. I agree with most of the lyrical atrocities listed here. Let's face it, Homegirl has cranked out some real stinkers. For some reason though, they don't sound as ridiculous when sung as they do on paper. Lucky for Stevie ! Still, the two things she needs more desperately than a new wardrobe person are an editor and a thesaurus.

I always loved this song. It would have been so much better than some of the crap from RAL or Street Angel.

I've always liked this part-

"He says, 'You never cared about time before, my friend.'"

I think those are her worst ever. I can't even listen to that song without wanting to retch!

Me too! Those lyrics are serious ball sniffers! Totally awkward words. Still love her though!

Her strong vocal, the harmonies, the power of that song & the rest of the lyrics override those little teeny tiny problems for me.

Besides, I tie the "face becomes thin" line to the earlier "the woman is so tired so the woman disappears" part. It's so sad.
I agree. I don't think she's saying she didn't believe her face could become thin but that she never believed things would drag her down so...

Well, the irony is that it sounds awesome. I love her sound on this song. It is extremely nebulous but I like it just the same. She makes the silly lyrics sound cool, I like them. I'm very forgiving of a lot of things Stevie says. Don't you kind of have to be to be a fan?

But when someone plays with your hair it feels so good and is very intimate. Imagine you are 70 and still your lover takes great care to make you feel special. I love that line.
