You think 800,000 copies is a big success and indicates that many people were chomping at the bit for new Mac album? I think not. Their first week sales were a huge success, and then it dropped off the charts (not as quickly as TISL, though). Their days of successfully selling records have been over since Tango (or The Dance, but that success was because of pure nostalgia).

Compared to 50,000 that she sold (was that the number) it is eons more chomping

Plus, I think I made it clear "FM's days of selling millions of records is over"

I thought that ChiliD already explained that to you.

People weren't "chomping at the bit" because they didn't know it was out there.

No promotion = low sales.

I takes one song to make or break an album in it's first week. It takes the other 11 or so to keep it on the charts. Peacekeeper was a bad first single, and the running order killed it from selling more. What casual fan would want to listen past Murrow?

Oy. If I wasn't a fan and had just tuned into Today and Leno to see who Fleetwood Mac was, I would have gone running for earplugs.

It sounded like karaoke night at The Apollo. You would never listen to those performances and believe for a second that Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham actually have careers as singers.

"Promotion" is not just a single blanket term with the same equivalence in all instances, either. Which "promotion" do you think is going to translate into substantial sales? I mean, d'uh, George, right?

In fact, the "Spring Break" context is a far more accurate gauge of popularity & sales among the key music demographic than whether Fleetwood Mac is appearing on the Morning Show or something. If a performer or a band sounds hot to the wriggling, skanking naked kids on "Spring Break," then it's a hit! So all you folks who keep talking about "Well if they had done this to the album, or if they had kept that person in the band, or if they had gotten some more airplay on the Adult Contemporary stations, or if they had appeared on Howard Stern, they'd have sold a lot more," try to imagine how far four aging, paunching 55-year-olds singing "Peacekeeper" would have gotten on that beach stage on "Spring Break" with the audience out there.

Everybody who wanted "Say You Will" bought "Say You Will." Fleetwood Mac was hot in 1976-1978. Every year after that, even if they had a #1 hit album, they were widely considered yesterday's news. Today, they aren't even yesterday's news -- they're like something out of the primeval pools of petroleum. It isn't called "dinosaur rock" for no reason.

but WE love 'em -- & that's really all that matters.

My point, again, is many of CM's fans knew she was releasing a record and it was advertised. She did some press for it as well. So, it is not like it went out without anything whatsoever. But, you will never concede that so that is all.

She was good on Rhiannon

and SYW - as good as she can be on that. I think it was LB that sunk that boat.

They should have picked songs they could actually sing fairly well at 8 in the morning. Rhiannon and SYW were not good choices, IMO.

TV didn't change anybody's minds. I bet the only people talking about that TV appearance were we fans.

Everyone who wanted SYW bought it. The millions who didn't want it ... didn't buy it. Their minds weren't changed by TV appearances in freezing-cold weather or other aspects of "promotion" -- they just didn't want it to begin with. What would a typical System of a Down headbanger fan want with "Say You Will"? to use as a clay pigeon?
