I'd maybe go as far as to say: just bring in John so we have a dedicated bass player and leave Brett to do guitar, keyboards, backing vocals etc. I love Wally and he works great on Lindsey's solo stuff so I guess Mick can tour with his Blues band? |

Seeds We Sow lyrics as best I can decipher right now:
Soldier's of Fortune that do conceal everything they're afraid to show everything they once gave_____ to steal oh the seeds we sow Soldiers of Fortune in paradise have to tell ourselves let go running through their veins with water cold as ice oh the seeds we sow Oh, ta ta ta Oh, ta ta ta Sweet things, pretty things a dollar and the_____ king Edgar Allan Poe Medicine men have all gone inspired Oh the seeds we sow Had a dream that you reached for me in the night Touched me soft and slow Everything was wrong but everything was right Oh the seeds we sow Oh, ta ta ta Oh, ta ta ta Oh, ta ta ta Oh, ta ta ta Oh, oh the seeds we sow Oh, oh the seeds we sow Oh, oh the seeds we sow Oh, the seeds we sow

Blimey, I'm just so struck again by these lyrics. First of all, they're really good, among the best he's written, so nice one, LB!
But it's how much they hark back what we know about the happy times in his relationship with SN. Doesn't 'Sweet things, pretty things ...' seem to resonate with 'Some lace and paper flowers'? Doesn't 'the penny arcade of Edgar Allen Poe' evoke, oh, someone who might've just been a Poe fanatic from way back? I don't know what I'm trying to say except, um, it's a bit odd. And by that I mean obvious, and poignant, and maybe a little humiliating for his wife. |

Yes, that is a bit odd (trying to sound like Christine there). We only know of 7 songs and so far all of them, even the cover, seem to talk about the same thing. Michele |

Obviously, Lindsey's words will be a little different and the changes will also be fun to analyze, just like Try for the Sun was. But here are the Rolling Stone words:
She Smiled Sweetly Why do my thoughts loom so large on me? They seem to stay, for day after day And won't disappear, I've tried every way But she smiled sweetly She smiled sweetly She smiled sweetly And says don't worry Oh, no no no Where does she hide it inside of her? That keeps her peace most every day And won't disappear, my hair's turning grey But she smiled sweetly She smiled sweetly She smiled sweetly And says don't worry Oh, no no no "There's nothing in why or when There's no use trying, you're here Begging again, and ov'r again" That's what she said so softly I understood for once in my life And feeling good most all of the time But she smiled sweetly She smiled sweetly She smiled sweetly And said don't worry Oh, no no no Oh, no no no Oh, no no no |

I'm just so excited that Lindsey has a new album coming out!
The lyrics are very interesting, and of course, they are typical Lindsey. I would just love to be able to bounce around in his mind for a little while. Anyway, I'm going to have to read these lyrics several more times before I attempt to figure out the meaning behind them. Right now, I'm just going to be happy to have read them.

I never like to get a feel for a song with only lyrics to guide me. Especially Lindsey's, considering how obscure he can be at times. Definitely a trait he shares with my beloved Michael Stipe. It always helps me to have the music playing whilst looking over the words, as they could be the most severely morose, yet have unbelievable happy clappy sound effects going on. Which obviously can skew the meaning of the words. I just can't wait for his new album and see what brilliance he can come up with this time. I know it's modelled on Out Of The Cradle, but I have difficulty believing he'll top it. Then again, it's up to Lindsey to prove me wrong. And I very much hope that he will

Although there is some whimsy in the tall grass, certainly you can't fully judge the mood of Second Hand News from the lyrics alone.

Looking at the latest video, it now sounds like this for SWS:
Sweet things, pretty things are dying in the penny arcade of Edgar Allan Poe Medicine men have all gone spying. Oh the seeds we sow Medicine men spying reminds me of Stevie's recent comments about her Klonopin doctor seeking groupie information from her. Michele |

See, Lindsey never struck me as a particularly great lyricist in the past but he packed some punches (I really LOVE his words on all his Tusk songs). But when I uncovered the lyrics to SYW I was amazed at how much he had grown. Wow. And there were signs before that, because OOTC had some gorgeous moments. But SYW is when LB really showed that he wasn't just filling in space. And I think he's just grown since then. He isn't really fluffy and flowery, more like a gun shot or a punch, but he says it really well. And he has some beautiful moments. Castaway Dreams is a good example.

Lindsey always had pearls that stood out for me in Walk A Thin Line, SMAP, Can't Go Back and Tango, to name a few.
But then I was blown away by the words in Miranda, start to finish. So, I guess I could say that SYW was the first time I thought an entire song read like poetry. But I've always been floored by the way he uses words anyway, matching and molding them to sound so that even when the words are incredibly simple ones, the meaning cuts so deep. His voice screaming, piercing through, smirking, yelping, little hiccups. I get floored by Wrong, Time Bomb Town, The Ledge, Go Insane. Even just the way he says "don't say that you love me" for Tusk . . . I've always walked around saying, "fate takes time" or "dusty fury on a mountain top" or "melodies awaken sorrows from their sleep," just mumbling his little phrases over and over again. So, there was never one epiphany for me. I never thought, "Oh, he's turning into a better lyricist." Because he's always sprinkled these little genius word couplings throughout his material, I never found him lacking in that category. I've been horrified by the Popeye moments and this latest "oh ta ta ta" truly makes me cower, but I've always known he could turn me inside out with a line, so if there was a point in time when his lyricist skills were lacking, I never noticed.
