March 4, 2012 "Tales from Development Hell" - The Lord of the Rings almost starred The Beatles Tails from development hell is a recently released book detailing many behind-the-scenes horror stories tracking the convoluted process of bringing a script to the big screen. Here's the official description:A compulsively readable journey into the area of movie-making where all writers, directors and stars fear to tread: Development Hell, the place where scripts are written, actors hired and sets designed... but the movies rarely actually get made! Among many of the scripts discussed are Neil Gaiman's Sandman films and a Planet of the Apes by James Cameron. One excerpt details a possible Lord of the Rings adaptation, with The Beatles as frontrunners for major roles, stating:Lennon was interested in the role of Gollum, with McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr opting for Frodo, Gandalf and Sam respectively. As this idea was being considered, the possibly arose to present it as an animated piece, with the designer and art director of the Yellow Submarine film, Heinz Edelman, at the helm. Edelmann has said that his version of The Lord of the Rings would not have been stylistically similar to Yellow Submarine: “The artwork would have been completely different: much less colour, and unrealistic, but without the art nouveau touch Yellow Submarine has.” http://www.examiner.com/tolkien-in-n...ed-the-beatles Examiner March 4, 2012 INTERVIEW: Roberta Flack says the Beatles' music is full of universal love Roberta Flack's new album, "Let It Be Roberta" on 429 Records, her first in eight years, transforms the Beatles music. March 7, 2012 Yoko Ono denies claims that John Lennon had bulimia Yoko Ono has denied claims that John Lennon suffered from bulimia. According to the Daily Telegraph, a new book from author Debra Sharon Davis titled BackStage Pass VIP claims that the Beatles legend loved to eat food such as bowls of Rice Krispies topped with ice cream, but forced himself to be sick afterwards as he "hated the feeling of being full". "Lennon was confused about his obsession with food," she said. "Lennon was surrounded by talented musicians, but many had drinking and drug problems – so it was hard for them to see Lennon's purging behaviour as extraordinary."One must also realize that at that time the public and the media were unaware of bulimia as an addiction and health risk – which made it all the more frightening for John Lennon," she added. "He literally had no point-of-reference on what he was experiencing."However, Ono has now denied the allegations, with the singer telling the Daily Mirror that her late husband "was always on a very healthy diet". He went off-topic for the final track, though, bringing in his kids for reinforcements on an angry cry for justice in the death of Dana Wells, his stepson, who died in 1996 in a North Phoenix car crash. Cavalera and his family believe another vehicle intentionally ran Wells off the road. The Brazilian rocker who first rose to fame in the '80s as the guitar-playing vocalist for heavy-metal icons Sepultura moved to Phoenix in the '90s after marrying Wells' mother, Gloria. Soulfly's latest effort is the first he's recorded in Phoenix, working with producer Chris "Zeuss" Harris at Tallcat Studios. Here's Cavalera on "Enslaved," to be released on Tuesday, March 13. Q: Speaking of home, how did Phoenix come to be your home ? A: It was inspired by my wife. We met in 1989 when Sepultura played New York and she was managing Sacred Reich. She had a bar here called The Bootlegger. Bands used to play there all the time, like Nuclear Assault and Exodus. Even Poison, I think. So I met her and she started managing Sepultura. Then, eventually, we started going out and we ended up getting married. So my logical move was to move here with her. We lived in Paradise Valley, two blocks from where I live now, which is also in Paradise Valley. Then, we have a house in New River, which is kind of a weekend house -- very beautiful, seven acres. That's where I wrote the song with Sean Lennon for "Primitive," called "Son Song." I took Sean to the mountain house and we came up with all the riffs and most of the lyrics in this mountain house, which is really beautiful, surrounded by cactus and everything. So I love Phoenix, man. Outside Brazil, this is my home. Q: That song with Sean Lennon is great. A: He'd never been to Arizona his whole life so he was very excited. He'd never been to the desert, so I drove him around. And he didn't want to stay in a hotel. He wanted to stay in my House. I was like, "OK, if you can put up with my kids waking up at 7 in the morning and dogs barking" (laughs). He didn't care. He was here for, like, a week. http://www.azcentral.com/thingstodo/...-enslaved.html Last edited by msLinds; 03-12-2012 at 08:38 PM.. |

March 13, 2012 Beatles tribute show ‘Rain’ will shine at Kingsbury Musical theater » “Rain” is the next best thing to a musical time machine. The Rutles no doubt got The Beatles memorabilia ball rolling, but with a "mockumentary" cutting-edge satire of the hippy ethos that made Beatlemaniacs cringe and laugh in equal measure.By most accounts "Rain" precedes that sort of impolite nonsense, with roots as an early 1970s "club band," then known as "Reign." Then, with some help in 1979 from Dick Clark, things really got rolling when original members of the tribute band were enlisted from the film "Birth of The Beatles." The rest, as they say, is history when we flash forward to Broadway, where "Rain" the tribute show became a stage sensation. http://www.sltrib.com/sltrib/enterta...e-com.html.csp Examiner March 12, 2012 Exhibit looks at life in San Francisco the year the Beatles invaded U.S. (pics) It was 1964 and for those living in San Francisco, it was an exciting time for many reasons. March 14, 2012 Julian Lennon - Guess It Was Me Sometimes as a reviewer it is probably better not to know who you are listening to before passing judgement. Julian Lennon must be used to being compared - musically - to his father by now, but it must be hugely irritating. But those comparisons are hard to avoid.Having released his first album for more than 10 years, Everything Changes has been well received. Guess It Was Me is the second single lifted from it; a gentle slice of pop rock with a fuzzy little guitar solo thrown in. It never quite gets out of second gear but contains more than a whiff John Lennon and The Beatles. The production only adds to the obvious vocal comparison."I had to learn my own way" is a repeated refrain and it couldn't be more pertinent. Proving to have diverse interests and talents, Lennon has recently been focussing on his photography, with exhibitions around the world. So perhaps he has found his own way. http://www.music-news.com/showreview...nReviewID=7965 Mail Tribune March 14, 2012 Taymor to be honored at festival - director of "Across the Universe," An inside view of the Kennedy family, the crusade to keep Detroit going, a cold, hard look at global warming — all are part of the lineup for April's Ashland Independent Film Festival, which promoters hope will draw more than 19,000 viewers in its 11th season. The big splash will be guest Julie Taymor, director of "Across the Universe," the fantastical review of Beatles music, which will be shown and followed by a question-and-answer session. Taymor directed Helen Mirren in "The Tempest" and won a Tony for Best Director in a Musical for "The Lion King."She joins Oregon Shakespeare Festival Artistic Director Bill Rauch in "Essential Transformation: In Conversation with Julie Taymor" at 6 p.m. Friday, April 13, and on Sunday evening will receive the AIFF Artistic Achievement Award. The popular movie festival and its panels runs April 12-16 and is noted for its accompanying social scene, in which viewers and filmmakers get to know each other at local restaurants and watering holes, says Anne Ashbey Pierotti, who is in her first season as AIFF executive director. http://www.mailtribune.com/apps/pbcs...NEWS/203140321 CA.COM March 15, 2012 'Norwegian Wood' - Isn't It Good? Yes, It Is: Japanese Film Screens at Memphis Brooks Museum of Art. A Japanese story of tragic love and sexual awakening and longing and frustration directed by Vietnam's Tran Anh Hung, "Norwegian Wood" is as melancholy and fragile and at times even as lovely as the*John Lennon composition*from which the movie borrows its name (heard in its original Beatles version during the closing credits, and performed, in part, in a voice like a butterfly's wing by actress Reika Kirishima during the film). http://blogs.commercialappeal.com/th...um-of-art.html The Westaskiwin TImes March 14, 2012 Eight Arms to Hold you leaves audience laughing Its a shame more people haven’t seen the Wetaskiwin Theatre Society’s production of Eight Arms to Hold You.If you haven’t seen it yet, take some time this Friday or Saturday night and go see the co-production between the theatre society and Sacred Heart Catholic School. While most of the cast is made up of students from various schools in the city, it is far from just another school production. The show features Waterworks veterans Dennis Taekema, Ross MacGregor, and writer/co-director Ken Mastel in supporting roles. But the real stars are the youth. The show, which was first staged by the Wetaskiwin Theatre Society more than 10 years ago, follows the arrival of the Beatles in America on Feb. 7, 1964.For those two young to know about the hysteria that followed the Beatles back in the day, just think what it would be like if Justin Beiber came to town.In the musical, which closes this weekend, a group of friends is bound and determined to see the singing sensations up close and personal.Hilarity ensues as the teenage girls lie their way into the Beatles’ hotel room, complete with ”borrowed” maids outfits. But do they actually get to meet their idols? You’ll just have to go see the show for yourself to find out. http://www.wetaskiwintimes.com/Artic...aspx?e=3500878 |
