Michelle has been my inspiration. I am studying her oeuvre. Her oeuvre is fascinating."

Beatles a big hit at Rio Carnival

English speakers got their moment in the Carnival sun as a wild, Beatles-themed street party took place.Sargento Pimenta, Portuguese for Sergeant Pepper, is one of more than 400 raucous street parties that spring up throughout Rio de Janeiro during Carnival season.Hundreds of thousands of people turn out for the largest of the "blocos", packed, sweaty open-air dance parties where the crowd sings along to a repetitive medley of Carnival songs - usually in Portuguese, of course.

Diana Krall talks about her collaboration with Sir Paul McCartney.

*Diana Krall has worked on Kisses on the Bottom, the latest album from Paul McCartney, which revisits some old American jazz standards.*Talking exclusively to The Express, she told us about her collaboration.*She hates talking. Which is not very convenient for even a simple phone conversation. Diana Krall lives in the United States, her house is lost in the countryside with her twins. And she's not very keen on doing some promo for the album.

Hohner brings John Lennon 'Imagine' harmonica to Toy Fair

Venerable music instrument manufacturer Hohner, Inc. was back at Toy Fair last week showing the newest addition to its broad range of children's product, particularly its Puppy Slide Whistle--a cute variation, geared for 24 months and up, on the traditional slide flute: You blow into the puppy's mouth and move the tail to change pitch and make melodies.Children at heart, however, couldn’t help but notice a corner display of harmonicas--Hohner's bread-and-butter adult product. But besides a counter grab jar brimming with colorful translucent harmonicas for kids, there was also a grownup collector's item: The John Lennon Series Imagine premium harmonica, to be available at select retail outlets in April at a suggested $99 pricepoint. The Lennon harp is the third release in Hohner's Signature Series, which began with a Steven Tyler model five years ago and was followed by a Bob Dylan issue three years ago. The Lennon entry is distinguished by its brilliant white coverplates, a clear acrylic comb, and Lennon's familiar multi-colored self-portrait drawing and signature beneath the Imagine logo--which is in all caps on the top cover; on the bottom, the Hohner logo, also in all caps, is in rainbow colors--the first time it's ever been anything other than black or red.

Covers from next door to Lennon

ROBERTA Flack has one issue with her new Beatles covers album, Let it Be Roberta. It's not the song choices. Although that was such an issue she's already planning a sequel. Rather it's a mid-'70s photo of Flack with John Lennon and Yoko Ono in the artwork for the album.Flack, who still lives next to Ono in New York's Dakota building, is in a revealing dress." They had to talk me into using that photo," Flack says. "I didn't remember I didn't have a bra on that night. You know when you're young and foolish? I had guys dressing me: wear that, don't put anything under it. And out I went. That's the first time I've seen that photo. But it's history."Flack, who turned 73 this month ("Shhh," she says), has interesting history with Lennon. She heard him writing Imagine through the walls."I didn't hear him singing, 'Imagine there's no heaven' but I heard him writing the song, playing the piano," Flack says. "The back of his music wall connects to a wall in my house. I did hear Imagine seeping through the walls."John was a sweetie pie," she says. "He was not so vocal. I never heard him yell or scream. He was like his music, very introspective. What he was thinking came out. And boy, did it come out."His work is so wonderful. He asked me to come to the studio when he was about to finish Double Fantasy. I don't know what I did. Yoko was there, too. She's a very smart lady. They loved each other so deeply. Their son, Sean, is like a mix of John and Yoko. I'd love to see what his father would have thought of his music."

REVIEW: The Beatles go to the moon in fictional book combining music, history

For many of us, the '60s were a nonstop "trip" with the music of the Beatles the soundtrack to historical events like the race into space. Both were incredible in their own way. Combining the two would be another way to bring a new element to the Beatles' story.*And that's what author Ronald P. Grelshamer has done with "Into the Sky With Diamonds" (Hey Bulldog Press).

Beatles Church For Sale ?

Beatles fans the world over will be looking to add another piece of memorabilia to their collections soon, as a limited edition model of the so-called 'Beatles Church' goes on sale. Artist and sculptor John Moreton, born and brought up in Neston on the Wirral and now based in West Kirby, has seen his hobby turn to a labour of love and on into a viable business.Having created a number of collectable cast sculptures of significant landmarks from his local area, he has now used his talents to create models of St Peter's Church in Woolton, Liverpool, and the Church Hall next door, where John Lennon and Paul McCartney first met on July 6th 1957.The grounds of the Church are also famous as being the location of the graves of Eleanor Rigby, Bob Paisley and John Lennon's Uncle, George Toogood Smith.

Latest update on ex-Beatle Ringo Starr: He's doing great

We checked with Ringo Starr's representative this week to get the latest word about his health. And the word is good.*To recap, the former Beatle missed the 54th Annual Grammy Awards, where he was announced as a presenter, the MusiCares benefit honoring Paul McCartney and the Walk of Fame ceremony, where it was announced he was feeling "under the weather."On Feb. 13, it was announced pneumonia was the reason he didn't attend. "Ringo has pneumonia and unfortunately he and Barbara regretted they weren't able to attend MusiCares and he had to cancel his participation as a Presenter in this year's Grammys," his representative told us in a statement. But in response to our inquiry, she indicated he's doing much better.

KLOS' Chris Carter rolls out salute to Beatles movies

In other news, Art Laboe exhibit included in Grammy museum tribute to Los Angeles music.Chris Carter celebrates the "Beatles at the Movies" Sunday (Feb. 26) on his 9 a.m.-noon KLOS/95.5 FM show "Breakfast w/ the Beatles."Songs from every Beatles and Beatles-related film will be played. It will range from the U.S. premieres of "A Hard Day's Night" in 1964 and "Help!" in 1965 to non-winning Beatles Oscar best-song nominees, including Paul McCartney's "Live and Let Die" in 1973 and "Vanilla Sky" in 2002.Carter, of course, is our storyteller, and one of many gems is the Beatles' last public performance on the rooftop at No. 3 Saville Row in central London in 1969. Carter said it was at "the new Apple headquarters around mid-day on Thursday, Jan. 30. The temperature was a nippy 40 degrees. It lasted a full 42 minutes and may well have gone on longer had it not been for the complaints of their neighbor, Stanley Davis, a wool merchant next door who was not a Beatle fan, so it seemed. I pieced together the best recordings and linked them together to give the real deal on the rooftop."

'Looking Through a Glass Onion' finds new insights into Beatles

Composer uses multimedia to deconstruct 'White Album'Scott Freiman is a Beatles geek. But it's OK.He's highly functioning, he has a day job and he does his best not to haunt old record conventions in search of a "butcher cover" copy of "Yesterday and Today."In fact, Freiman, like many fellow Beatles geeks, has actually turned his fandom into a job of its own, one he loves and does well.

Ringo marches to own beat on latest album
Beatles legend produced 'Ringo 2012'

Beatles fans are always scouring the band members' solo albums for interesting credits. On the newest release, "Ringo 2012" (Hip-O/UMe), they will find one they've never seen before: "Produced by Ringo Starr."Since recording his first solo album in 1970, Starr has been recorded by rock 'n' roll's top producers, including George Martin, Richard Perry, Arif Mardin, Don Was, Jeff Lynne and Mark Hudson. But for his last disc, "Y Not," he co-produced himself with engineer Bruce Sugar. "I was a bit nervous, because I hadn't done it before," Starr said. "But it worked out so well that I thought, Well, I'm gonna do the next one."

George Harrison wasn't the flashiest, craftiest guitarist of his day, just the one everyone loved. His sound always served the songs, just enough to make them better, but never enough to eclipse the writing of Lennon or McCartney or even his own tunes.

On the cusp of superstardom (and living it up in Weston-super-Mare): Beatles fan's unseen photos of the Fab Four having fun in the sun

These previously unseen photos show the Beatles having not such a Hard Day’s Night but relaxing in a seaside hotel in 1963, just months before their global rise to fame.In one shot the Fab Four are seen sun bathing topless on the terrace - except for John Lennon who is still donning a dark waistcoat and shirt. In the background a pasty-looking gentleman is sunbathing in his underpants, oblivious to his famous neighbours. In another Ringo Starr and Paul McCartney take afternoon tea out of china cups as a group of old ladies sit in armchairs nearby.A third picture shows the group relaxing on deck chairs with Ringo waving and the fourth shows George Harrison sharing a pot of tea with a friend.

Happy Birthday, George Harrison! Celebrate with Evan Rachel Wood's cover of his classic Bob Dylan collab 'I'd Have You Anytime' -- EXCLUSIVE - Video

Had he not sadly passed away in 2001, today would have been George Harrison’s 69th birthday.Though he was always overshadowed by the overwhelming songwriting prowess of John Lennon and Paul McCartney, his post-Beatles work was, in a lot of ways, the most varied and eclectic of his former bandmates’ work. (That’s not to put down his contributions to the Beatles, as many of his songs — including “While My Guitar Gently Weeps,” “Here Comes the Sun,” “Something,” and “Taxman” — are among the greatest rock tunes of the era.)

George Harrison’s Beloved Guitars, Gently Weeping on Your iPad

Some music fans understandably regard the guitars owned and played by George Harrison, in his Beatles career and as a solo artist, as sacred relics that may still contain fragments of their former master’s spirit.Dhani Harrison, the son and only child of George Harrison, appreciates why the instruments he inherited from his father are so venerated but sees things slightly differently.“It’s not like Spinal Tap,” he said recently, referring to that satirical rock ’n’ roll troupe. “*‘Don’t point at it, don’t even look at it.’ They’re not quite like that.”

Mystery Texas Collector to Give Beatle George Harrison's Aston Martin DB5 its U.S. Debut at The Concours d'Elegance of Texas

Houston stand by. George Harrison's celebrated 1965 Aston Martin DB5 will make its U.S. debut in the Lone Star State in May. The anonymous Texas collector, who made global news in December when he won the international bidding war for the legendary Beatle's sports car at a London auction, has confirmed that it will be on display at the inaugural Concours d'Elegance of Texas, helping to raise some serious money for charity. "If you have ever wanted to have your photograph taken in a sports car that once belonged to a member of the world's most famous rock band, this is your chance," said Lolly Bezy, Executive Director. "We are delighted to be in a position to offer spectators such a great opportunity and look forward to a sensational event this spring."

The Flaming Lips, Plastic Ono Band Release 'Brain Of Heaven' (VIDEO)

The video for "Brain of Heaven," the collaboration between Yoko Ono's Plastic Ono Band and The Flaming Lips, is simplified surrealism. The video features what looks like Wayne Coyne and possibly Yoko Ono in a half technicolor laser show and half black-and-white impression needle toy (see here). The video is nothing too spectacular, just Coyne and Ono acting like they are trying to ward off the digital, alternate reality they are performing in. The collaboration is beautiful, though. The track is a parred down version of the space age creations typical of The Flaming Lips, with a basic drum-kit beat, string instruments and Yoko Ono's crooning vocals.

A spiritual connection with John Lennon is revealed in new article

February 27, 2012 – The paranormal world and the spirit of John Lennon have just "come together" in a literal way, through a very personal account that has just been published.Anything concerning the woo-woo—ghosts, UFOs, reincarnation, prophetic dreams, and angels, you name it--have fascinated me since I was a little girl. And for many years now I have been intrigued with the afterlife of John Lennon, for personal reasons, as I will explain. I have published several articles about the subject--the spooky accounts of his ghostly presence in Paul McCartney’s life, as well as May Pang, and his son Julian Lennon. (see Stories from John Lennon’s afterlife—visits from beyond the grave.)

Five Minutes With Yoko Ono

Five minutes. That’s all the time I’d get with Yoko Ono. The legendary singer, song-writer, performance artist, peace activist and widow of John Lennon was going to be in New Delhi in early 2012, for four days, inaugurating two shows in India. Five minutes. The last time she visited India was along with Lennon in the 70s. One of the shows, ‘Our Beautiful Daughters,’ was conceived exclusively for India while the other, ‘The Seed,’ is a retrospective. Both were to open simultaneously at two Vadehra galleries.I had asked for about an hour. That was cut by half. Then a further fifteen minutes were whittled away. What kind of interview was possible in fifteen minutes? Roshini Vadehra, daughter of founder Arun Vadehra and director of the institution, met me the weekend before the invitations-only press conference. From the very start, she said, the plan made between herself and Parul Vadehra, sister-in-law and co-director, “was to limit access, to keep it dignified.” So there was no question of getting to spend an extended time with Ono. Her team of five handlers would act as buffers throughout and even for micro-brief individual interviews, the only opportunities would come immediately after the press-meet.

Art: Rock photo exhibition - Elvis, Dylan, Beatles, more - rolls into Allentown Art Museum

Rock-and-roll music embodies the spirit of several generations, which is to say raucous and sometimes transgressive behavior by both musicians and their fans, idol worship and mass hysteria. These effects have been observed before, particularly in young people - remember crooners and bobby-soxers? - but rock-and-roll has been an especially persistent and powerful shaper of popular culture. Why else would public television still be reviving musical acts from the 1960s to solicit contributions during periodic fund drives? Now rock-and-roll has invaded the art museum, which you might not think would be a congenial venue for an art form that represents the antithesis of quiet, solitary contemplation.

The Beatles took DC in a snowstorm

Everybody screamed, journalists commented on the silly haircuts, the interviews were high-energy, infused with wit, sarcasm, and lit cigarettes. Most fans of modern music know that The Beatles invaded America in 1964 and played on The Ed Sullivan Show. But did you know the band hopped a train – they eschewed air travel due to reports of nasty weather - and stayed in this city immediately after the Ed Sullivan hysteria ? And that, here, they played their first ever concert in North America?* Yes, Washington DC – February 11, 1964.

Counterfeiters of The Beatles are spamming fans to convince them to buy a DVD of the legendary UK band, a computer security firm warned this week. The spam mail offers a "box set" that appeared to have put all the band's songs into one DVD, computer security firm Sophos said."They've even gone to the effort of adding a mini-documentary for each official album from 'Please Please Me' to 'Abbey Road,'" Sophos said in a blog post.It added the tracks and the video content may be "similar" to what Apple announced for its iTunes store late last year.Sophos warned prospective buyers they may be encouraging the spammers if they fall for the ploy and buy the box set.

Please Please Me: Rock's Top 10 Greatest Double Entendres

Almost half a century ago this month, the Beatles released their first U.S. single, "Please Please Me." Though a fine example of the group's early pop sound, it wasn't an immediate smash in the States. After being issued in England on the EMI-owned Parlophone label on Jan. 12, 1963, Capitol Records, EMI's U.S. label, rejected it. Atlantic passed, too.A minor, Chicago-based label named Vee Jay finally released "Please Please Me" stateside on Feb. 25, 1963. The band's name was misspelled on the single's first pressing, and the song was a flop. It would be nearly a year until "Please Please Me" became a hit when it was re-released in the wake of the Beatles' appearance on the Jack Paar Show. Soon, Beatlemania would be in full swing.

The Top Mysteries Surrounding The Beatles

I've long been a fan of The Beatles. And I've long been fascinated by the topic of unexplained historical mysteries. So for this article, I thought I'd combine the two.As one of the 20th century's biggest pop cultural phenomena, The Beatles have been endless analyzed and discussed in literally thousands of books over the years. But for all the analysis, there remain a few lingering mysteries about this band. And with the passing of the decades, it's unlikely a lot of these mysteries will ever be explained. So, here, in my opinion, are the top mysteries surrounding The Beatles:

John Lennon and Yoko Ono, Rolling Stone

On Dec. 8, 1980, noted lenswoman Annie Leibovitz photographed former Beatles singer John Lennon and his wife Yoko Ono at the couple's New York City apartment for Rolling Stone. Leibovitz had initially wanted to shoot Lennon alone, but he insisted they both be in the photograph. After she asked Lennon to remove his clothes and curl up next to Ono, Leibovitz said Ono offered to remove her top, but the photographer told her to keep her clothes on. The resulting photo of a nude Lennon curled around his wife "captured our relationship exactly," Lennon allegedly said after seeing a Polaroid.

Ken Scott: 'The Beatles Were The Most Experimental Band Ever'

Ken Scott is considered one of the most respected engineers and producers in the history of rock music. Having started working at Abbey Road Studios in the late 60's, one of his first sessions was working with The Beatles. Scott later worked with artists as such as David Bowie (including Bowie’s classic albums, 1971’s "Hunky Dory" and 1972’s "The Rise And Fall Of Ziggy Stardust"), Mahavishnu Orchestra, Supertramp, Lou Reed, Devo, Dixie Dregs, Missing Persons, and Jeff Beck to name but a few. Exploring the Beatles influences outside rock 'n' roll

The Beatles had their rock 'n' roll influences -- Chuck Berry, Little Richard, Elvis Presley and Buddy Holly, to name a few, but the music that helped mold their sound also goes back a lot further. The music of Cole Porter, George Gershwin, Irving Berlin and Duke Ellington had a role in their sound. Paul McCartney sang "'Til There Was You" and "A Taste of Honey" on their albums. The Beatles also did "The Honeymoon Song" during their BBC broadcasts.

'A Date with a Beatle' book signing

The Cranford Public Library is pleased to host Judith Kristen, author of the recently published A Date with a Beatle, on Wednesday, March 21, at 7:30 p.m. in the Cranford Community Center. The Community Center is located at 221 Walnut Avenue.‬ A Date with a Beatle is a charming look back at the glory days of Beatlemania, as seen through the eyes of a loyal, devoted, and very persistent fan who eventually managed to meet her idol, George Harrison. Ms. Kristen was born in Atlantic City and raised in Northeast Philadelphia. She is a popular children's book author, an animal rescuer, and an international humane education teacher. Her recent trip to London and Liverpool to introduce A Date with a Beatle was such a success that she has been invited back to England and to central Europe for a nine country summer tour in 2012. A Date with a Beatle has been translated into German and will also be released in Spanish.

John Lennon's love for Bermuda to be celebrated with CD, tribute concert in June

In his later years, John Lennon became very fond of Bermuda. Lennon traveled to the island in 1980 and wrote some of his last songs, including "Woman" and "Watching the Wheels," there. The island nation has several events planned June 21 to commemorate Lennon's time there, according to Tony Brannon, who is coordinating the events. The highlight is the release of a tribute CD featuring both Beatles and Lennon songs. Among the artists to appear are Maxi Priest, Bailey Outerbridge (who contributes her version of "Revolution"), Paul Carrack, Nils Lofgren, Heather Nova, Rebecca Faulkenberry and Nic Christopher, Judie Tzuke, Chewstick, Rhino’s Express (Status Quo), Mia Chambray, Rachel Brown and Biggie Irie. The CD is being produced by Ride the Wave charitable group.

From Him To Them: 49 Years Ago George Martin's Advice Cements The Beatles' Fame

'From Me To You', released on April 11, 1963 was, technically speaking, The Beatles' first U.K. number one single. The second in a sequence of four, devastating body blows to the British pop scene in 1963 (the others being 'Please Please Me'/'She Loves You'/'I Want To Hold Your Hand'), 'From Me To You' raced up the charts upon its release, knocking 'How Do You Do It?' (a song the Beatles had rejected) off the top*spot.

Let’s get ready to rumble—it’s The Stones vs. The Beatles

For decades, the battle has raged: Beatles or Stones ? In the bands’ heyday, fans accused London’s Rolling Stones of stealing ideas—even entire albums—from their Liverpool counterparts. At the same time, the Beatles often copied the Stones’ “bad boy” style and attitude. Both groups produced an array of hits that changed musical history and inspired a debate that has never been settled: Which is the greater band? Now a couple of tribute bands will try to settle the score.Abbey Road and Jumping Jack Flash will present “Beatles vs. Stones: A Musical Shoot Out” on Fri., March 30 at The Canyon club in Agoura Hills.

Yoko Ono's "Our Beautiful Daughters" Celebrates Women And Peace In New Delhi (PHOTOS)

Yoko Ono has been an activist for love, feminism, peace and artistic exploration since the early 1960s. In honor of the beginning of National Women's History Month, we are proud to feature her work on our page.Ono is famous for her romance and collaborations with John Lennon, and though most know her name few are really familiar with her work. (And no, her epic Rolling Stones cover doesn't count.)The artist, who recently celebrated her 79th birthday, is associated with the Fluxus art movement, which blended different media and disciplines, although she always remained an independent artist. Her work in the 60s and 70s arguably helped precipitate New Wave music and the avant-garde as we know it today. She made great strides in the progress of experimental poetry, film, music and art, all while being a worldwide muse.

Bill Frisell headlines Newport Jazz Festival 2012

The Newport Jazz Festival 2012 will mix it up this summer with Bill Frisell performing selections from his newly released "All We are Saying" John Lennon's Songbook beginning on*Saturday, August 4th at Fort Adams State Park, Newport, R.I. George Wein, festival producer and founder, announced the welcomed news to music fans yesterday after 2011 reviews pondered the future of the Newport Jazz Festival with only a "serious jazz" program line-up, presumably appealing solely to diehard jazz fans. The question was asked, "How would the festival survive without engaging the younger 'loosey goosey' concert-goers?" While Grammy-winner Frisell has been a standard in jazz guitar, he spans the bridge between serious jazz and*recognizable tunes with his "dazzling improvisation," remaining true to the melodies of John Lennon's songs.

Area bands saying yeah, yeah, yeah to music of The Beatles at Blind Pig tribute show Saturday

Beatlemaniacs should be in heaven Saturday night. That’s when around a dozen mostly local musicians and bands will come together to offer a night of eclectic interpretations of Beatles tunes at the first-ever Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Jam at the Blind Pig.“We have some straight-up rock and roll bands on the bill, we have a hip-hop artist on the bill, we have some moody folk indie people on the bill,” said Alejandra O’Leary, one of the event organizers as well as a musical participant. “You can invite a broad range of artists to interpret these songs, its’ a natural fit. … Every album, every era, every facial hair is fair game. “It’s a good mix of Beatle-y bands and non-Beatle-y bands, I think,” she added.Longtime local favorites George Bedard & The Kingpins will perform a special mid-show set of music from bands that influenced The Beatles. He’ll be followed by nearly a dozen others who will delve into the Fab Four’s formidable catalog.

Iconic Beatles photo on display in Boston
A Picture is Worth…$68,500

It’s not often one comes across a covetable item when rummaging through old boxes or through the basement. Perhaps an old photo stirs up memories of a bad hair day, but the box will probably end up going back to its dusty spot and forgotten once again. The same could not be said for photographer Mike Mitchell, who is most famous for his Beatles shots in the early ’60s. Last summer he uncovered 46 never-before-seen photographs of the Beatles’ first U.S. concert in 1964 after the Ed Sullivan Show. Digital Silver Imaging, a black-and-white photo lab, repaired Mitchell’s silver gelatin prints that were once unsalvageable. The discovery made international headlines and the photos were auctioned in July, selling for over $364,000.

Sean Lennon Brings Akira and Other Favorites to Los Angeles Animation Festival

Sean Lennon is best known in music circles. The 36-year-old son of John Lennon and Yoko Ono has released three solo albums, as well as two full-lengths with girlfriend Charlotte Kemp Muhl under the name Ghost of a Saber Tooth Tiger (GOASTT). He played with Cibo Matto, collaborated extensively with his mother and worked with The Strokes' Albert Hammond Jr. Right now, he's in the studio producing Muhl's new project, Kemp and Eden, which will be released on their record label Chimera Music. What people might not know, though, is that Lennon is an animation buff. He animated his own video for the song "Would I Be the One," a T. Rex cover that appeared on his album Friendly Fire, as an homage to Fantastic Planet (La Planète Sauvage). He also translated and sang music for the French animated film A Monster in Paris, which premieres on the West Coast March 10 at the Los Angeles Animation Festival.

Blink 182 tell why they owe it all to The Beatles ahead of ECHO Arena show

THEY’RE the all-American multimillion-selling kings of the three-minute pop-punk anthem. Blink 182 are the perennially teenage and – let's admit it – hugely catchy punk-pop band that brought their Californian sounds to the world. So I’m surprised when singer Mark Hoppus tells me he’s moved to England for a year.“It’s really fun,” he grins. “Really cold, but really fun. In California I get in my car and drive everywhere. Now I can walk pretty much everywhere I want to go.“I’ve been to pretty much every tourist attraction. I loved Windsor Castle. That was ridiculously cool. And the Cabinet War Rooms were awesome. Now I’m heading north.“When I come to Liverpool I am going to be the biggest Beatles tourist you’ve ever seen. I can’t wait.“We’re massive Beatles fans, I grew up listening to British music and The Beatles were huge among my friends – I owe everything to those guys – so I’m going to be the biggest Beatles geek when I get to Liverpool. I’ll be there at Paul and John’s houses. Can you go to George and Ringo’s too? I want to see everything while I’m there.”

John Lennon - Bigger Than Jesus
John came up with a list of all the things he didn’t believe in

http://exploremusic.com/shows/the-complete-beatles/

Now let me take you back, to the 4th of March 1966, the day London newspaper the Evening Standard published an article by Maureen Cleave titled How Does a Beatle Live – John Lennon Lives Like This. She visited John at his home and they strolled about talking casually about various subjects including words John later wished he could have pulled out of the air and stuff back in to his mouth. Lennon pondered which would go first – rock ‘n’ roll or Christianity, saying “Jesus was all right but his disciples were thick and ordinary”. And he said “Christianity will go … it will vanish and shrink and I will be proved right”.Nobody in England took much notice. In fact there was no great controversy until months later, when the quote was reprinted in*the U.S. teen magazine called Datebook and the you know what really hit the fan. George Harrison, the pragmatist pointed out that while some people in the south took to burning Beatle records, they had to buy them first.Quite in contrast to all that, in terms of how much things would change post summer of Love and post Woodstock, fast forward 4 and half years to the fall of 1970, when John was no longer a Beatle, he went into the studio record his debut solo album … a record dealing largely with his troubled relationship with his parents and in the case of one song, dealing with walking away from his other family – The Beatles.

He also managed other popular artists such as Gerry & The Pacemakers, Billy J Kramer, The Foremost, The Dakotas and Cilla Black.Brian Epstein recalled meeting The Beatles: "I hadn't had anything to do with management of pop artists before that day that I went down to the Cavern Club and heard the Beatles playing... I was immediately struck by their music, their beat, and their sense of humour on stage - and even afterwards when I met them I was struck again by their personal charm. And it was there, that really, it all started."
