The Beatles on Ed Sullivan: It Was 48 Years Ago Today

Forty-eight years ago, an event occurred that shattered the American psyche and permanently altered society as we know it.The Beatles, a long-haired quartet from Liverpool, England, appeared on the Ed Sullivan show in New York and introduced a huge audience of some 73-million people (more than one-third of the entire U.S. population) to the joyous melodies and excitement of the Fab Four.

The man who rejected the Beatles

Exactly 50 years ago, Decca's Dick Rowe turned down the Fab Four, so heading an unenviable club of talent-spotters who passed up their biggest chance. But is it all an urban myth? A new book suggests so"Guitar groups are on their way out, Mr Epstein." With that airy dismissal of the Beatles, supposedly directed 50 years ago this month at the group's manager Brian Epstein, Dick Rowe of Decca made himself unwittingly but enduringly synonymous with catastrophic commercial misjudgements. He might be honorary president of an unenviable club that includes all the publishers who turned down a book about a boy wizard by a hopeful young writer called Joanne Rowling, and indeed William Orton, the president of the Western Union, who in 1876 decided not to pay $100,000 for Alexander Graham Bell's patent for the telephone, declaring the apparatus little more than a toy. Two years later an anguished Orton admitted that he would consider the patent a bargain at $25m.

Paul McCartney Rocks His Own Tribute

How can anyone not be a Paul McCartney fan? Rolling Stone put the question to Bonnie Raitt last night on the red carpet of the MusiCares Person Of The Year gala honoring McCartney. "Are you kidding? This is the time I make no bones about it, I get completely gobsmacked," Raitt said. "I watch the show, I go like this, I do the Scream face by Edvard Munch." The red carpet for this benefit raising funds to help musicians in need inspired many surreal moments. There was Elvis Costello greeting Smokey Robinson with a hug, Neil Young chatting with Yoko Ono, James Taylor dropping by our interview with Raitt to say hello, and on and on. Even Dave Grohl lost it.

Lennon drawings coming to Denmark

A collection of drawings by John Lennon are to be exhibited for the first time in Denmark. Yoko Ono has announced that some 100 pieces, depicting the Beatle’s life with his friends and family, will be on display at the Hotel Crowne Plaza, Copenhagen Towers. Before The Beatles became a worldwide pop sensation, Lennon went to art school in Liverpool, and apparently harboured dreams of being recognised as an artist until his death in 1980.Some of the drawings are from Ono’s private collection, and several have been coloured by her.“They give pleasure and show people what a great artist he was. All artists want recognition, and we didn’t draw anything specifically to put it away and forget it,” Ono told Kulturen on News.“Artists want to communicate and John can communicate even now, so I am doing what he wanted to do,” she added.

Rare Beatles photos on display in Poole

Poole, England -- An exhibition of rare previously unpublished photographs of The Beatles in Bournemouth and Poole are on display on the top floor foyer at Lighthouse, Poole's Centre for the Arts, now through March 10th.The exhibition features photographs, posters and stories from author Nick Churchill's recent publication Yeah Yeah Yeah: The Beatles & Bournemouth, the definitive account of the connections between the greatest rock 'n' roll group that ever was and a small town on the south coast of England. Did you know that the band played more shows at Bournemouth Gaumont than any other UK theatre outside London ? With stunning images of The Beatles taken in and around Bournemouth, photos licensed from Beatles Monthly and never-before-seen images of John Lennon's aunt Mimi at home in Sandbanks, the story is told using first-hand accounts from the people who were there, the fans, reporters, photographers, venue staff and musicians. The exhibition features more than 40 photographs taken of the Fab Four when they appeared in Bournemouth in the 1960s, including Robert Freeman's iconic half-shadow photo that adorned the With The Beatles album sleeve which was taken in the restaurant at the Palace Court Hotel in Westover Road (now a Premier Inn) during the Beatles' week-long summer residency at the Gaumont in August 1963. Other exhibition highlights include posters from Beatles shows at the Bournemouth Gaumont and Winter Gardens, plus a remarkable colour photograph of John Lennon by the Sandbanks Ferry in Poole with his Aunt Mimi and four-year-old son Julian.Lighthouse are also hosting a Beatles Film Special on February 28th, with a screening of Richard Lester's classic A Hard Day's Night, which perfectly captures The Beatles in all their irreverent glory on the road to mega-stardom, while giving a real sense of Sixties London.

Beatles were huge influence on Nirvana, says Dave Grohl

The Foo Fighters star spoke of The Beatles' impact on his life with Access Hollywood at the 2012 MusiCares benefit on Saturday when Sir Paul McCartney was named the organization's 'Person of the Year'. When I was young, that's how I learned how to play music - I had a guitar and a Beatles songbook," he recalled. "I would listen to the records and play along. Of course, it didn't sound like The Beatles, but it got me to understand song structure and melody and harmony and arrangement."Grohl added: "I never had a teacher - I just had these Beatles records… Even in Nirvana - the Beatles [were] such a huge influence.

Beatle signature turns up in clear-out
Statement signed by George Harrison to "keep Berkshire beautiful" during Newbury bypass creation

IT is amazing what you can find in an old drawer. This ‘Keep Berkshire Beautiful’ slip referencing the Newbury bypass and signed by legendary former Beatle George Harrison was found during a clean-up of the Campaign To Protect Rural England (CPRE) office in London on Tuesday.Dated 1988, the statement outlines a resistence to housing being built across Berkshire at the time, and mentions “the likely route of the Newbury bypass which will destroy some of our finest scenery”, eight years before the construction of the bypass became national news.

Paul McCartney: 'John Lennon and I had the same premonition about The Beatles' success

Songwriting duo both had dream about digging up gold coins, he saysPaul McCartney has revealed that he and John Lennon both had the exact same dream about achieving worldwide success with The Beatles. In an interview with The Big Issue, McCartney – who released his new studio album 'Kisses On The Bottom' last week (February 6) – said that both he and his songwriting partner experienced the same premonition about digging up gold coins in a garden. The singer, who suggested that the dream was a metaphor for the fame they'd achieve with the Fab Four, said: "Life gives you minor premonitions. You don't think of them as premonitions until the dream comes true and you think, 'Hey, I wonder if that was a sign?'.

Why Sir Paul McCartney didn't have a Walk of Fame star sooner

LOS ANGELES - Sir Paul McCartney received a star on Hollywood's renouned Walk of Fame recently.* It's not a surprise that the star was awarded in conjunction with Sir Paul performing at the 54th Annual Grammy Awards 2-12-12, Clive Davis' annual pre-Grammy party 2-11-12, and his being celebrated as the MusiCares Person of the Year on 2-10-12.* It's been an exciting trip for the former Beatle. Many reacted to Sir Paul not having had a star sooner as something of a personal insult or a lack of recognition.* The Beatles have a star.* All of the other former Beatles have stars - Ringo Starr, George Harrison, and John Lennon.* Why not Paul McCartney - he's even been knighted by Her Majesty, the Queen of England

Al Rizo, the man who was my co-pilot on the 365 Bars blog, gave me an idea about doing a post of going to John Lennon places in New York, back when I was doing MAD. I already had the idea for this blog when he told me, so I told him it would be better suited for this blog, since I could do it in the afternoon, as well as evening. And today’s the day. Here we go off on a John Lennon walking tour of New York City. Can you imagine ?

Brian Epstein and the quest for a contract

On a cold winter’s day in early 1962, Brian Epstein and the Beatles huddled together contemplating their failed bid for a Decca recording contract and the bitter aftertaste of rejection that left emptiness in their stomachs. But hunger can feed ambition. Disappointments would ensue, but almost immediately Epstein would be the proverbial right man in the right place at the right time and meet a string of people who were looking for something not-quite-exactly unlike the Beatles.

50 Years of Dodger Stadium: The Beatles Rock the Ravine

There’s only a few things that I love as much as baseball. Cinema and music are two of them. If there was one concert which I could have had the privilege of attending it would have been the Beatles concert at Dodger Stadium on Sunday, August 28, 1966 at 8:00 pm. The Beatles are my all-time favorite band. I even took a Beatles course in college (yes, that in fact exists). A couple lesser known ska bands, Goldfinger and The Toasters, are also on my permanent soundtrack of life. Yet the music of the Beatles influenced those bands and most other musicians to follow. The Fab Four are forever the quintessential boy band. A Day in the Life is my favorite Beatles song, and I have fond memories of listening to my mother’s Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band album on my record player over and over again in high school. It almost sounded better than the CD version I listen to today. Perhaps I am a bit of a flower child at heart.

Betsey Johnson Catches Beatlemania

Betseymania broke loose in the tents at Lincoln Center! In true Betsey Johnson style, the funky designer paid homage to the 1960's and The Beatles with her whacky touch when she revealed her fall collection Monday (Feb. 13) at New York Fashion Week. Not one for subtlety, Johnson's inspiration was clear from the very beginning as the Rolling Stones reverberated throughout the venue and black and white footage of teenaged girls screaming for some mysterious off-camera icon played. Fab four or Betsey? As the show started, each ensemble appeared to have walked straight from Abbey Road to Lincoln Center, carrying titles such as "Lennon Lux" and "Eleanor Rigby."

BWW CD Reviews: HERE COMES THE SUN, A Lovely Tribute to the Beatles by David Lanz and Friends. Pianist David Lanz, with able assistance from Gary Stroutsos (woodwinds), Walter Gray (cello) and Keith Lowe (bass), has put together a sequel of sorts to his wonderful album of Beatles songs, Liverpool, with a new collection called Here Comes the Sun. This time around he includes a terrific cut from the quiet Beatle, the late George Harrison (who was/is actually my favorite of the fab four). It's another masterpiece of subtlety and charm, perhaps even more lovely from than the first. Lanz is going to promote the new work with a small tour, so be sure to catch him live if you have the opportunity.

The Beatles’ Abbey Road Photo Shoot Outtakes

The Beatles’ iconic (and widely imitated) album cover Abbey Road shows all four band members walking across London’s Abbey Road. At that time The Beatles were recording the majority of their songs and albums at Abbey Road Studios (was then called EMI Studios). On August 8, 1969, Scottish photographer Iain MacMillan captured them simply walking across the street for the album’s cover. The shoot reportedly took just ten minutes but, as you can see, they had walked back and forth across the street before catching that now-famous image. Here is a gallery of outtakes from that legendary photo shoot.

Louise incorporated the new non-profit in the State of Florida on Jan 23rd of this year. The goal of "Louise Harrison's Help Keep Music Alive, Inc." is to bring her broadway class Liverpool Legends show to schools, and have the music students play a large role in the second half of the concert by playing on stage with Liverpool Legends. The proceeds of each of their previous high school shows went to the respective schools where the concerts were held, minus the costs of putting on the show, like travel costs and hotel rooms. Through the new non-profit organization, Louise is now looking for sponsors to help defray these costs, so that more of the money taken in at these concerts can go directly to the actual school's music department.Louise wants to hear from you if you're a school music director or school administrator and you'd like to arrange for one their shows to happen at your school. Also, please contact Louise if you're part of a company that can sponsor services to Louise's cause, like air fares and hotel rooms. Preparations are underway for a number of events this June to commemorate the late musician’s two-month stay on the Island.Organisers are keen to hear from anyone who met or remembers seeing Lennon during his final summer vacation, or who has Lennon memorabilia from that time. The singer stayed in Bermuda in June and July of 1980. He rented a house in Fairylands, Pembroke, and is known to have visited a variety of places on the Island, including the former Disco 40 nightclub, The English Sports Shop on Front Street and Stuart’s electronics store on Reid Street. Paul McCartney Quits Smoking Pot for Daughter, Is Happy Beatles Didn't Reunite

Parental responsibility means sacrifice, even if you're one of the biggest rock stars of all time. To that end, Paul McCartney has revealed that he's quit smoking pot, mainly out of a sense of duty to his 8-year-old daughter, Beatrice."I did a lot, and it was enough. I smoked my share," McCartney said in an interview with Rolling Stone. "When you're bringing up a youngster, your sense of responsibility does kick in. Enough's enough."

ThreeAsFour Blast Off to Outer Space
February 16, 2012

Threeasfour spun the concept of functionality and design to the far reaches of outer space for their F/W '12 show. The avant designers applied over-sized, Milky Way-like swirls and beads to metallic coats and leather lace overlays on skintight dresses and knee-high boots looked both celestial and extraterrestrial at once. With artists Sean Lennon, Yoko Ono, Chuck Close, Terence Koh and Kathy Grayson in attendance, it makes us wonder if the look was befitting of a star? See the backstage photos of the Threeasfour show below.

ThreeASFOUR Fall 2012 Comes Full Circle

ThreeASFOUR moves right around in a circular motion, looping from the printed wearability from Spring 2012 to the more experimental outer layers of Fall. The circular thematics broke garments into fragments to assemble spherically. Leather cut laser allowed for a precise interconnectedness, as the pattern looks particularly like a spine spinning in spirals, also partially like wheels turning in a machine. The machine of threeASFOUR –Gabi, Ange, and Adi – work insulated amongst themselves, not adhering to trend cycles, but to their own spherical vision. When Sean Ono Lennon releases the threeASFOUR documentary he is filming, perhaps we will learn more how these circular parts began to turn.

“We All Shine On” an interview with Yoko Ono on John Lennon’s art

Yoko Ono knows what it’s like to have people second guess her work because of who she is. Many who are unfamiliar with her success in ability as a visual artist.“Many people still consider him not a very professionally valuable artist. I’d really like to say that you should get what you can from John’s work because it’s really unique and beautiful,” Ono said. “There’s a spirit shining in it.”And it’s naysayers like that she’s vowed to campaign against. It was a promise she made to Lennon before he died. When John passed away I realized that both of us were artists and we wanted to communicate with the world. John can no more in a way, so I wanted to make sure that his work would be communicated. That is my pledge to John,” she said.

Yoko Ono: Come together with John Lennon art

Yoko Ono calls from the kitchen of her Manhattan home. Her voice is small but words tumble out at a New York pace, like an overturned box of nuts and bolts and deck screws. She is “up to my neck” in projects, she admits, “but we don’t talk about my things, we talk about John’s work.” And for the next few minutes, her voice softens into a graceful glide. After 20 years of talking about it, Ono has lost none of her affection for the touring exhibition “Remember Love: The Artwork of John Lennon.”

Media Junction chief to oversee estate of fifth Beatle

The MD of London based entertainment marketing agency Media Junction, Giles Cooper, has been appointed CEO of the estate of Stuart Sutcliffe, the founder member of The Beatles, whose influence on the band is widely recognised, despite him leaving before the fab four found fame.Sutcliffe, of course, died aged just 21 after suffering a brain haemorrhage in 1962, but he had already created a substantial collection of paintings, visual art being his true passion. Those artworks form a bulk of the estate, which is valued at £5 million, along with an array of memorabilia from The Beatles’ early days performing in Hamburg.

Beatles tribute Toppermost set to bring Fab Four's sound to Michigan Theatre

JACKSON — Nearly 50 years has passed since the Beatles first appeared on “The Ed Sullivan Show” and took America by storm.Yet, the Fab Four from Liverpool remain almost as popular and influential as they’ve ever been, which is why tribute bands, such as Toppermost, are such an attraction.Toppermost, whose members are from the Detroit area, will perform at the Michigan Theatre on Saturday in what the group is calling a 50th anniversary celebration of the Beatles.“It’s universal music, really, much like Mozart,” said Toppermost member Tom Diab, 41, who portrays Paul McCartney. “This is a big year for the Beatles.

Cruisin' With the Beatles -- a ride on Beatles Tribute Cruise 2012

The man behind the just-concluded Beatles Tribute Cruise, Woody Lifton, says the 2012 edition, which ran from Feb. 4-11 and was highlighted by seven concerts in seven nights for 200 Beatle fans, began with a surprise. "Stepping in as George for the house tribute band Revolution was Jimmy Pou, who I consider to be the best George Harrison impersonator in the world," he said. "Jimmy is an old friend of mine and we hit it off right from the start."Lifton said he approached Tim Piper, who plays John Lennon and was the leader of Revolution, and asked him if former Wings guitarist Laurence Juber and former Ringo Starr producer Mark Hudson could join the band on stage for a few numbers. He agreed and that night the trio played on three songs with Revolution. Lifton says the party went on until until the wee hours of the morning.

Lost Paul McCartney track unearthed
February 17, 2012
Full-length collaboration with Art of Noise to be released for the first time

"McCartney called in the Art of Noise to remix the track in the summer of 1985," explains project curator (and author of the 2001 biography 'The Unknown Paul McCartney'), Ian Peel. "It was a mad, cut-and-paste retake that turned the song – McCartney's last US top ten hit – into a left-field electronic collage. Members of the band have since recalled how both Paul and Linda McCartney joined them – Anne Dudle, JJ Jeczalik and Gary Langan – in the studio for what sounds like a very experimental session. The finished remix was released on 12" vinyl in November 1985 and has never appeared on CD. Art of Noise are the linchpin to ZTT's Art of the 12" series, so their remix of Spies Like was top of my list of inclusions for this new Volume II."

Band Romance: Musical Couples Through the Years

Does it really matter who was the inspiration for the Beatles’ song, “Julia?” After all, the songs that make the biggest impact are not those that tell us the most about the celebrity singer’s life but those that tell us the most about our own lives. “Julia” is a great song not because it provides tabloid gossip about a woman John Lennon knew but because it gives shape to our feelings about someone we know, because it captures the calming delight of morning love, when the lusts and worries of the night before have been exhausted and we are glad to bask in the affection of someone with “seashell eyes, windy smile…her hair of floating sky,” someone as relaxed and optimistic as Lennon’s acoustic-guitar picking.

Primal Scream: The Trauma Behind John Lennon’s Brilliant Plastic Ono Band

Beatles fans who favored John Lennon’s most deeply personal songs – “Julia,” “I’m a Loser,” “Help!” – could scarcely have imagined the searing introspection Lennon would unleash with his first post-Beatles solo album. Released in December 1970, Plastic Ono Band gave new meaning to so-called confessional songwriting. Framed by rock’s most basic instrumentation – bass (played by Klaus Voormann), drums (played by Ringo Starr) and guitar and piano (played by Lennon himself), the former Beatle presented himself in all his myriad guises, from angry rebel to devoted soulmate to questing artist striving to free himself from the shackles of Beatledom

Artist Attack! Yoko Ono is My Hero and I'm Not Sorry
True artists are prophets. I don't want to be that prophetic in that sense because it's so lonely."

"It is hard to write about Yoko Ono as an artist for a few reasons, including but not limited to my inability to separate Yoko Ono's tweets from spoken word poetry. It is also hard because of the sheer length and depth of her artistic career: Yoko was creating art - and feminist art*at that - before she even met that dude John Lennon. Afterward the work she had been doing, and continued to do, kind of got eclipsed by his. And it's a shame, because her work was and remains prophetic, profound, and honest. John Lennon once said everyone knew who Yoko Ono was but nobody knew what she did. But what she does is create art - performance art, conceptual art, fine art, visual art, the written word, music - that moves people deeply and talks about what's going on on the inside.*Yoko Ono's art is about communicating the inward outward, challenging peoplet o think about the world around them, and, of course, peace. I tend to see her pieces as being about peace --world peace, inner peace, peace and quiet.Plus, she's completely and totally provocative. What's not to love ?

The Beatles’s connections with Bournemouth are explored in a new book Yeah Yeah Yeah

In their whirlwind, jet-set lifestyle The Beatles played Hamburg, New York, Paris and . . . Bournemouth. Arts Editor Catherine Jones reports on their lesser-known triumphs.THEY played endless dates in the clubs of Hamburg, and a well-documented 292 times at the Cavern. But it turns out that, outside London and Paris, the Beatles’ most regular theatre dates were in . . . Bournemouth. In the apocryphal words of Michael Caine, not a lot of people know that.
