It seems to me that if money was that big of a motivator, he would've pared it down to 12 songs and collected royalties on all of his.
Well, they both had the same amount of songs. So, seemingly they both got the same royalties

On the other hand, it seems to me that both have large enough egos that Stevie might have insisted on having the same amount of songs as Lindsey, but we'll never know.

Also - I forgot to address your point about GYOW being in commercials. That's not quite the same, since it is the automobile corporations that he is making the money from, not the fans.

In any case, we're going to have to agree to disagree and leave it as that, as I have to go to work now.

To many (not me mind you) - selling out you art to a commercial is the same as slapping your name on a bottle of wine - in fact, it could be considered worse as the wine had nothing to do with the music while the commercial did. In other words, Mick was not selling out his art, LB was.

If an artist you really like is making money from car commercials, they're not selling out. If an artist you dislike is making money from car commercials, they're selling out.

Right?

It reminds me of that line in "Bullets Over Broadway" when the Rob Reiner character gleefully states that he has never had a success because he could not lower his art for commercial sale - or something like that.

Mechanical royalties for albums don't work like that- they are capped at a certain number of songs. Back in the stone age when I was still involved in music business, mechanical royalties were paid up to ten songs per album. However, I think it might be up to 12 these days, but, I'm not sure.

So, 10, 15, 18, or 23 songs- the mechanical royalties for the album sales are all the same.

How many songs did Stevie write for SYW?

It's understandable. Hell, there are even FLEETWOOD MAC fans who wish Stevie'd just go away.

Right, but would they then get royalties for writing six each - or did LB take, say, 4 and La Nicks 8?

I think the individual songwriter gets full royalty payments up to 10 songs. So Lindsey got full payment on his 9 'Say You Will' songs, as did Stevie. But if it had been a double, 24-track album, then they each would have had reduced royalty rates to make up the difference on their additional songs. Lindsey was offering to take the hit himself, so Stevie would receive her full royalty payments. Remember him saying in the documentary that, in figuring out how he could swing that financially, he'd have to be guaranteed that the band would tour for a solid two years (or was it three?) for him to recoup his loss on the album? Since he wasn't confident that the band would tour for that long, he made the decision to pare the album back to one disc.

Why on Earth they didn't split all the tracks they had into two separate albums and release them a year apart, is beyond me. They wouldn't have had to discuss royalty rates and reduced payments, or any of that stuff.

I agree, esp. since they were going to tour that long anyway

I don't remember it quite like that ( I'd have to go back and look at it again). The only thing about that section I remember is he saying that if Stevie decided to pull out after say 40 shows, then he'd have to reconsider whether it be a single or double cd.

Aesthetic decisions come into play at some point, don't they? Apart from the financial & business considerations, there is an aesthetic statement being made with a big collection of tracks all called "Say You Will." What that is precisely, you'd have to ask Fleetwood Mac. But I have no doubt it's there & that it played a role in the decision.

For example, I think Lindsey & perhaps Mick very much had "Tusk" on their minds when they were planning & getting started on this album.
