The dead weight is gone - France 2-0 Togo -

France go through to play Spain in the 2nd round - really big game, that one.

Switzerland 2-0 South Korea

Switzerland top the group and will play Ukraine in the next round, ensuring that a less-fancied nation makes it through to the quarter finals.

Now the knockout phase will begin - this is when it gets really exciting

That's going to be a close game - one of the best games of the round

Germany 2-0 Sweden

This wasn't a close game - Germany scored their goals early in the game and Sweden never got into it. When Sweden got a penalty after an hour or so and missed, you knew it was over. But have Germany really been tested yet? They'll be tested in the next round for sure

they sure will be,argentina beat mexico after extratime 2-1
by extratime mexico was tired and after argentina took the lead, they had no way of challenging them. only first period was really good, but judging on that,germany-argentina will be an excellent game.
good luck to england against ecuador

Argentina 2-1 Mexico

The best game I've seen in a long time. Mexico were not fancied to do well against the impressive Argentinians, but they seemed to know exactly what to do to stifle the Argentinians' creativity. Mexico scored first after 6 minutes, but Argentina equalised 4 minutes later. After that it was very evenly matched - even the bad refereeing evened itself out. Argentina should have had a man sent off, but they also had a perfectly good goal disallowed. It was fitting that such a fine game was decided by an incredible goal, by Maxi Rodriguez 8 minutes into extra time.

Argentina now face Germany in the quarter finals - hard to see how it could be better than this though

Mexico were definitely more tired than Argentina at the end - I think the quality of the Argentine substitutes made the difference.

England might need luck against Ecuador!

I've not heard him "bragging". He's said he thinks we can we it - which is true if all of our players peform to their full potential, which they haven't so far.

Mighty Germans? You've got Argentina next.

Actually I hope Argentina win it (if England don't) because of their attractive attacking football, marvellous skill, entertainment value and I've drawn them in the office sweepstake!

Gail

Come on England!

No-one's bragging - they know they have to improve a lot if they're to win the Cup.

Like Gail said, you guys have got Argentina up next, which I predict will be the end of the line for the hosts!!

Yer I know too...it's just ashame we won't get to see England play any further in the tournament

Australia play Italy on Monday, I'm not hoping too much but I'd like us to do well, it's our first World Cup since the last German one so we are just happy to have got this far.

M-hm, just like some people predicted that Germany would be kicked out by Sweden etc.

Why do I get the feeling that some fans of other countries' teams have a problem with acknowledging that another, previously underrated team is playing much better than expected and that England hasn't yet shown the form it is truly capable of? Let's face it, the thing some English fans are really scared of is the prospect of playing against a strong German team, especially when comparing the matches England vs Sweden and Germany vs Sweden If the English team really shows its talents, THEN the Germans will have something to be afraid of.

BTW, DavidMn, thanks for the support ! I'm totally surprised by the German performance so far, too - and I don't want to come across as a smart a**, but it is Deutschland
