Slick Gallery

She actually has the gall to show these in a gallery? Horrible.

I doubt Stevie would write a song with words like "I've seen those high-stepping sexy witches / Sons of satin, songs of bitches--all were there in my dreams." Grace's Dreams album cover does remind me vaguely of a Stevie parody (I believe someone brought that up...did the Stevie parody "Angel of Night" inspire you...? Sparky?).
Indeed ! I have the album. I love that you get that parody. I think the cover and that song are Stevie parodies (homages) of the highest order.

Grace is a provocateur and is as crazy as a ****house rat. But I love her, and think that she is a true original and rebel. With a powerhouse voice. It was simply not her goal to be an icon and rock star forever. Like someone else said, Gracie has a family and a successful career as a painter. And she was part of the old guard - the first generation of women rockers. Stevie was in the second generation. That doesn't mean anything other than timing, really. But Grace kicked down some doors for women. And very unlike Stevie, who has always talked about working her way into the men's world of rock gently, Grace grabbed them by the balls. Let's not forget that Stevie, not unlike Madonna, was sleeping with most her collaborators. A different kind of grabbing by the balls...

Grace could belt better than Stevie, but she never has personally touched me in quite the same manner that, say, "Storms" does.
And I don't think it was her goal to do that, either. She did her thing, and was done. Not everyone wants to do it forever.

I've actually been to a gallery in Sausolito, California that displayed lots of her work. I thought some of it quite good. It's Andy Warhol-like pop art. For those that only like painting by Rembrandt...you won't like it.

Speaking Grace's art noted above, can anyone read the small print at the bottom of the white rabbit painting? I'm curious...

Yes. It reads "RCA M..... Voice" Can't make out the 2nd word. Remember the old RCA Victor advertisement with the dog looking at the gramaphone? So what Grace has done is substitute the white rabbit for the dog.

I think you're right about the 2nd word being "mistress's". So RCA wouldn't make much sense here.

I'll just say I disagree...totally...with this part of your post.

Well considering Stevie didn't even have a record deal by the time most of these women had risen to the top of their careers I guess I'm a little lost, I didn't say Stevie wasn't a major influence in rock, I said she wasn't a pioneer, big difference. Stevie was only a pioneer in perhaps the sense to have both a solo and group career going at the same time, but I already mentioned this and gave props to her, I just view her as an artist that came along after the first wave of female rockers.

Well in deference to Grace those are not two of her better paintings, but she is not a realist painter either, more a cross between animation and Peter Max, hmmm perhaps a Disney on acid.

Ah I get it, thanks. I like the white rabbit reference but her art doesn't do it for me. She's cool though, has she written an autobiography? If not, she should.

Yes, it's one entertaining read. She had a one night stand with Jim Morrison and they rubbed strawberries or raspberries all over the walls.

Have you heard that song she recorded with Linda Perry for the soundtrack to one of those Crow movies (the last thing she ever recorded)? I hadn't listened to it in years until this thread and hot damn, it's a kick ass song.

Really?? I think she should get back into music. I love, love, LOVE her voice.
What's the biography called? I've gotta read about the strawberries and raspberries!

Here's that song. Her voice is fantastic on it. She comes in at the chorus, around three minutes in.

"Somebody To Love." She's so damned funny and ballsy. I really wish she had named her kid God.

That would have been rad - but have you noticed her daughter is kind of...something...snotty? superior? self important? something...I remember thinking "oh, lame, I love her but her daughter seems like a tool."
So actually maybe God would've been a fitting name for her...

fans of artists like mccartney, debbie harry, and (even) stevie have good reasons to keep pleased with what they're still getting, on the other hand, grace slick's last years in commercial recording (exhibit a: We Built This City) were indeed something to keep one embarrassed about for years.
grace had tons of attitude and abilities, but nothing much to back it up in other aspects; she couldn't break free from her own "fleetwood mac", record her own "bella donna", and recreate a significant musical/iconic impact in her own right.
what i find interesting is how she didn't manage to consolidate a proper recognition to her contribution to rock's evolution, stevie, on the other hand, seems to be obsessed by those efforts in the last few years.
in a way, grace slick is like those chinese that sailed to america; history is being written by winners, and janis became the Columbus.
I just want to say this is an awesomely insightful post, and made me think of things I hadn't thought about before.
And by the way, Grace wasn't being sarcastic at all in the VH1 special. If you interpreted it that way, you are wrong. "oh, the magical witch. I love her." Yeah.
