Yoko Ono: IMAGINE PEACE
University of La Verne Harris Art Gallery
November 7 - December 15, 2011

While technically not a part of the Pacific Standard Time family -- which occupies some five dozen venues and explores art made in LA from 1945-80 -- this timelier than ever exhibition fits right in. It is cut from the same zeitgeist-cloth of action, Fluxus, installation, durational performance, political engagement, appropriation of mass communication media strategies, and empathetic conceptualism that defines the best of what PST has to offer. Although it originated at the University of Akron, curated by Kevin Concannon and John Noga with Ono’s active and ongoing involvement, the laid back insistence of its homemade aesthetic, its emphasis on direct action, soul of humor, and preponderance of documentation of fleeting non-object works -- not to mention the centrality of its anti-war message -- belong as much to the history of mid-20th century Los Angeles as anywhere.

The exhibition has a feeling of complicity and continuity, though it is comprised of areas of work by Ono and Lennon operating as solo artists and as a couple in the 1960s -- *including installations of John and Yoko’s Year of Peace that are designed to help visitors spread the message of love and peace through the distribution of ephemera, like the iconic black and white IMAGINE PEACE buttons; and also includes a selection of Ono’s recent solo works. Among the latter -- and among the most powerfully communicative objects in the show -- is her over-sized chess board, Play it By Trust. Recalling Ono’s penchant for painting everyday things white in order to refocus our perspective on their universal and symbolic qualities, the board is a visceral reminder that it’s impossible to fight an enemy who is indistinguishable from yourself. Moreover, that we are all ultimately connected, the same, rendering the fundamental adversarial stance of war absurd and untenable.

Beatle’s sister pens tell-all book
Louise Harrison opens up about the Fab Four

George Harrison’s sister Louise is to break her silence for the first time by releasing a tell-all book about life with the Beatles legend. The late guitarist, who died 10 years ago on Tuesday, was one of four siblings, and for years Louise has been urged to pen a tome detailing her experiences growing up with the star. Now she has finally relented and put together a book featuring her memories of the rocker, letters, and never-before-seen photographs from her family album. And she's adamant her work, due for release in 2012 or 2013, will go some way to dispelling the "myths and fantasies" surrounding the story of the Fab Four.Louise, who lives in Branson, Missouri, tells the Sarasota Herald-Tribune, "So much garbage has been written about George and the Beatles. Half of the stuff has been written by people who spent maybe an hour on a plane with the Beatles. Now I think it's my duty to get the truth out.

Ex Beatle to bring all his loving to Moscow

Listen to what the man said, especially if it is his majesty Sir Paul McCartney confirming his highly-anticipated live gig in the Russian capital in mid-December.The iconic 69-year-old singer once promised he could “work it out” and has kept his word to the Russian organizers of his concert, scheduled for December 14.According to his Moscow managers, “the scale of the show can be verified by the number of the personnel, the amount of equipment, the quality of state-of-the-art light, sound and lavish scenery.”Apart from tons of stage equipment, the former Beatle is also set to bring to Moscow the new Mrs. McCartney, Nancy Shevell. The 51-year-old American brunette is rumored to be three months pregnant.

George Harrison remembered ten years on
Ten years ago today, George Harrison lost his battle with lung cancer at the age of 58, ending one of the most influential musical lives ever led.Harrison gained a reputation for himself as 'the quiet Beatle', often preferring to leave the spotlight to his more vocal band mates. During this time, however, he was the songwriting master behind some of the most highly regarded songs of the band's career including 'While My Guitar Gently Weeps', 'Here Comes The Sun' and the cheeky stab at the tax department who were, at the time, taxing the band 95% because they found themselves in the top earners in the country, 'Taxman'.'When you think about it, the four egos, it's amazing they did anything because they're all very strong people,' producer George Martin said in a BBC Radio Documentary on Harrison.

George Harrison's 10 greatest Beatles songs
A video tribute to "the quiet Beatle"

Yes, of course, George Harrison was "the quiet Beatle," in as much as anybody in that seismic quartet could have really been regarded as such. While the tag might have been one of perspective - John and Paul were the frontmen with outsized personalities, and Ringo, well, he was Ringo! - it was, in fact, the furthest thing from the truth when looking at the impact that George Harrison, that lovely lad with the beautifully sculpted face and impossibly cool hair who also played some pretty darn fine guitar, had on this world. No, one really couldn't be "quiet" to garner the attention of the then-teenaged John Lennon and Paul McCartney with his version of Raunchy, an audition of which gained his entree into a combo that would become The Beatles.

Noel Gallagher has revealed that he recently met up with Paul McCartney backstage before a show in Milan. It's no secret that Noel Gallagher is a fan of the Beatles. During his spell in Oasis, the songwriter even went as far as to hire Zac Starkey - Ringo Starr's son - to sit in on drums. So when the guitarist found that he was in Milan at the same time as Sir Paul McCartney, Noel Gallagher couldn't resist attempting to meet up with his long time idol.

She loves you! Yoko Ono flies in from New York to watch Queen open Museum of Liverpool

The Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh traveled up to Liverpool today to officially open a new museum that honours the city. One of the biggest draws of the Museum of Liverpool promises to be the exhibits dedicated to the city's most famous export, The Beatles. John Lennon's widow, Yoko Ono, also attended the opening. There was a hush in the main hall as the Queen arrived. She smiled widely as she shook hands with Yoko - who had flown in from New York especially - and the Japanese philanthropist later raved about their meeting.

Beatle John Lennon Threatened in Extortion Plot, Says FBI

FBI files released today reveal that long-time Beatle John Lennon and his family were targeted in a $100,000 extortion plot in 1977, three years before Lennon’s murder. “WE ARE THE TERRORISTS THE FALN PUERTO RICAN INDEPENDENCE MOVEMENT,” a letter dated Nov. 29, 1977, announced. “This letter is a positive (THREAT) to your life. …” The letter demanded that Lennon leave $100,000 in “a strong package” with the ” clerk” by the front entrance of “Dakota House,” in New York City, where Lennon, Yoko Ono and their son lived at the time. It was the first in a series of letters – all in fractured English – that threatened the singer and his family with kidnapping or death if the demand for $100,000 was not met.“You have exact nine day’s from (sic) the date of this letter to decide & to get the money,” the letter instructed. It also warned Lennon not to contact the FBI or the police, “So don’t try to play any trick to us because we are good preparedly for it.”An internal FBI memo also released today shows Lennon did, in fact, go to the Bureau.

Yoko Ono coming to Delhi with art show

NEW DELHI: John Lennon had once described his wife as the "world's most famous unknown artist. Everybody knows her name but no one knows what she actually does". That is about to change as Yoko Ono, who has long been defined by her status first as a Beatle wife and then widow, gets ready for her first show in India. Yoko Ono, an avant-garde conceptual artist, has visited India with Lennon before but has never exhibited in the country. Now in a show, being billed as one of the hottest events to hit the capital's art circuit, the 78-year-old will not only bring some of her cutting-edge works but also create a special installation for India. "I love India and the contribution it has made to philosophy and music," Ono told TOI in an email interview. The show titled 'Our Beautiful Daughters' is being organized by Vadehra Gallery and will be held in Delhi from January 12.

Music and lyrics by Julian Lennon,Nick World

Nick Wood and Julian Lennon initially released this song as the main theme for a film called “Coo”. Upon becoming involved in the project, Nick realized the message within this song, the melody, and the concept behind the lyrics are more relevant today than they were when he and Julian initially wrote it. It has been especially been rerecorded for this album.

Flaming Lips promise epic New Year's Eve Freakout shows in OKC

Just wanted to add that The Flaming Lips and Plastic Ono Band will perform side-by-side sets. This is an idea the Lips first tried out this summer with Weezer. I was at both of those shows and it made for a very interesting concert flow. I imagine it will work great at the freakout, as the Plastic Ono Band's music will contextualize the Flaming Lips and vice versa...Also, The Flaming Lips will perform classic John Lennon covers with Sean Lennon and other members of The Plastic Ono Band at the Freak out, and at midnight they will sing "Happy Xmas (War Is Over)" with Yoko (more at - [psychexfutureheart (d0t) wordpress (d0t) c0m (backslash) freakout5tickets]) Speaking of which, besides "The Fear Litany," for the past few days the Plastic Ono Band have also recording "Brain of Heaven" and a re-recording of "Atlas Eets Christmas" with The Flaming Lips. These are presumably for the Lips' December release and one of which is possibly a holiday sequel to the Plastic Ono Band's 1971 classic "Happy Xmas (War Is Over)" (details at [psychexfutureheart (d0t) wordpress (d0t) c0m 2011/11/24/ war- is- over])

I wanted to post this older article that I found.Because its a interesting article about the different Guitars John and Beatles used

Premier Guitar
January 2010
Epiphone Inspired by John Lennon Casino Electric Guitar Review
Epiphone recreates a Beatles classic: John Lennon's Casino

Guitar for the Fabs. Many pickers my age started playing guitar because of The Beatles. Even if we have gone down different musical roads, we can still look back at how cool we thought those four lads from Liverpool were. There’s even a whole book devoted to just their gear (Beatles Gear by Andy Babiuk). Several of their instruments became very popular because of their association with The Beatles, particularly the iconic Hofner Beatle Bass, The Gretsch Country Gentleman, the Rickenbacker 325 and 360/12 and, of course, Vox amps. There are a few other instruments that while not quite as “iconic” as those mentioned above, were nevertheless well known because of The Beatles: the Epiphone Texan, the Rickenbacker 4001 bass and—last but not least—the Epiphone Casino.

Paul McCartney got his Casino in 1964 and used it beautifully, playing the solo on “Ticket To Ride.” John and George got theirs in 1966. George played his some but moved on to other guitars. Lennon on the other hand seems to have really bonded with his. He had it painted “psychedelic” then later had it stripped down to natural. Personally, I think the stripped one looked really cool when they played the roof concert. I should also say that I own a Gibson ES-330, which is basically the same P-90 pickup hollowbody as the Casino, so I am familiar with this sort of guitar.

Julian Lennon blames father John for his lack of children
John Lennon was such a bad father that he put his own son, Julian, off having children

Julian Lennon, 48, John Lennon's son by his first wife, Cynthia, has revealed that his difficult relationship with his famous father has discouraged him from starting a family.Julian, who has never married, said that – unlike his father – he wanted to be mature enough to cope with fatherhood.“He was young and didn’t know what the hell he was doing," Julian said. "That’s the reason I haven’t had children yet. I didn’t want to do the same thing. No, I’m not ready. I want to know who I am first.”Lennon’s comments, made in an interview with Record Collector magazine, are perhaps his most forthright yet about his relationship with his father.

I think I'm going to write to the Telegraph for how they worded their article. Julian never used those words, and I think they should feel ashamed for writing something like that on the eve of John's death.

What do you think MsLinds? Should I? Even if it doesn't do anything I need to get it off my chest. It bothers me.

Thanks MsLinds. I may not even do it. I just get tired of the negative spin on articles, particularly when this family has come such a long way. Oh well. Let them continue to be nasty. I'm going to rise above it. This time.

Lennon’s influence felt 31 years after death

While most people will be spending this week gearing up for the holidays and forming their in-law invasion plans, I will spend it listening to nothing but the Beatles and contemplating what the world would be without the influence of one of the most well-loved men in music's history. He had his issues just like every other artist but still managed to stay true to himself, regardless of whatever adversity he faced.John Lennon lived from Oct. 9, 1940 to his untimely death on Dec. 8, 1980. From his times as a young boy in Liverpool to his life as an adult in the states, he was able to accomplish many things that most people couldn't even dream of. He has had enormous success as a musician and as a political activist. Not many can say they have a vastly successful musical career as part of a group or as a solo artist, let alone both.Add to that the fact that he was also a powerful political and peace activist, and he has a pretty impressive résumé. His creativity and ideals have lasted through generations and are still being celebrated today. The proof of that is in the hundreds of thousands of pieces of memorabilia sold or the innumerous visitors to the Strawberry Fields monument in Central Park.

A Front Row Seat to Rock’s Golden Age

In an era when there were fewer fences around celebrities, Gruen knew many of his subjects personally. After meeting John Lennon in 1972, his relationship with the rocker and Yoko Ono evolved into an enduring friendship. The “Rock Seen” book includes a 1975 shot of Lennon holding his newborn son Sean in their home as Ono looks on. Gruen says he simply knew when to put the camera away. Of hanging out with Lennon and his band Elephant’s Memory, he says, “We all liked tequila and finishing off the night with a good steak and a cognac–and John was always picking up the tab. Not only was he funny and smart, but he always ate well. Eventually I tried to show up at lunch or dinner time ‘til it became a joke. ‘Bob’s here. Must be time for dinner.’”

Irish band The Aftermath buy John Lennon microphone

If you want to sound like a Beatle it may help to have one of their microphones.A Westmeath band have secured just that after their £6,650 bid for a vintage microphone used by John Lennon was accepted at auction. Now The Aftermath have access to the microphone he used to record 'Imagine'.Lennon had the microphone installed in his Georgian manor estate, Tittenhurst Park, near Ascot in 1970, where he and his band recorded the hit.His partner Yoko Ono and former Beatles George Harrison and Ringo Starr are also believed to have used the Neumann U47 microphone, made in 1970, during recording sessions."For Beatles fans like us, this is the equivalent of finding the Holy Grail. It's incredible to think that John Lennon sang 'Imagine' on it, which was a message to the whole of mankind," Johnny Cronin told the Irish Independent.

Next-generation Harrison proves creative talent runs in the family

You might imagine that the musical children of The Beatles would be hugely inspired by that mighty band's near-perfect body of work. Dhani Harrison, though - son of the late, great George - seems to have been influenced more by his father's extra-curricular activities. Now 33, Dhani is proving something of a creative polymath. Musically, his current passion is for cutting-edge British genres such as drum 'n' bass and dubstep, which pour forth on several projects with his production partner, Paul Hicks, and various guest musicians. George's tastes seep in almost subconsciously."I absolutely love Indian classical music," says Harrison. "You notice the interest when I sit with Paul. With the vocals I'll do 'guides', then we'll get people to come in and sing them, and there's always a few notes and a few changes that people don't get, and Paul will say, 'Oh, it's one of those Dhani notes again, he's been listening to too many Indian classical music records.'"

Paul McCartney: 'I felt sick the first time the Beatles played Wembley

Paul McCartney has spoken about his history of pre-gig nerves, revealing that he felt like quitting playing live as he was so nervous before The Beatles performed at Wembley Arena. McCartney is currently in the middle of a European arena tour and also said that he still feels like he has to win some of the crowds over. Speaking about his record of pre-show nerves, he told the Daily Mirror: "The first time we ever played – pre-Beatles – I screwed up. So I never played lead guitar again. When the Beatles did Wembley (Arena, then known as the Empire Pool) for the first time (in 1963), I felt sick. I thought, 'I’ve got to give this up.'"
McCartney added that even now he encounters crowd members who are "just standing there", but added: "We always manage to get them back in the end."

Paul McCartney joined onstage by The Rolling Stones' Ronnie Wood in London

Paul McCartney teamed up with The Rolling Stones guitarist Ronnie Wood during his gig at London's O2 Arena last night (December 5).

The former Beatle was playing his only London show of 2011, when towards the end of his set he told the audience he "had a surprise" for them. With that he ushered a denim-clad Wood onstage, having the guitarist play along with him on The Beatles' 1969 classic 'Get Back'. At the song's finish, Wood and McCartney hugged each other before the former left the stage.

McCartney's three-hour set took in Beatles, Wings and solo material, and also saw him play a number of Beatles tracks for the first time ever in the UK, including 'The Night Before', 'The Word' and 'Come And Get It'.

I'm sure I'll be terrifying': Stella McCartney to star in Ab Fab Christmas special

Jennifer Saunders' alter-ego Edina spent roughly 12 per cent of her time on Absolutely Fabulous tottering around saying: 'It's Lacroix, darling.'But as the show makes a one-off comeback this Christmas, it looks like her catchphrase might have to be updated. This time, will the eccentric PR be encouraging us to stock up on Stella McCartney clothes instead? The designer has been persuaded to appear in Ab Fab's Christmas special - although she still doesn't seem convinced that it will be a good idea.
