But, finally, Fleetwood Mac has found some stability within its instability and the band is going on tour to prove it. The Canadian leg of their Unleashed tour kicks off in Toronto tonight, and band members Mick Fleetwood, Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham spoke recently about the state of the band, its place in today's music industry and why they chose to tour without any new material. "You know, all of the changes we've experienced have been happening since the beginning," said drummer Fleetwood. "Band members have come and gone, but that's just how our story goes. Looking back on it, it hasn't always been easy -- surviving that change is actually somewhat of a miracle -- but it's who we are." "We never think of ourselves as a band that's broken up," added Buckingham. "We just feel that there are times to be together and times to be apart ... and we take significant periods of time apart. Because of that -- and because we continue to evolve and gain insight and appreciation for the road we've been down and for each other -- the songs can take on a bit of a new life every time we revisit them." This, in part, is the logic behind hitting the road now, despite not having a new album to promote. And while some may be tempted to simply call it a "greatest hits" tour, the group insisted this isn't entirely accurate. "It's the first time we've done this," said Fleetwood, "and it'll be refreshing in that we're selecting really emotive, connective songs that we've enjoyed throughout the years, that we hope people will be familiar with. "I would love to do another album, to make more music, but it ultimately comes down to bio-rhythms, how everyone's feeling. We have careers and families, and it's a different perspective than it was 20 or 30 years ago." Nicks concurred, adding that as long as a musician keeps playing, regardless of how much new material is written, his or her sound will remain fresh and original. What makes a good concert has less to do with the specific songs and more to do with how they're performed. In her case, a sense of enthusiasm and originality, at least at this point in her career, comes from alternating between solo work and collaboration. "It's kind of a blessing and you never get bored that way," she said. "It makes for a more exciting and uplifting humour because you're not stuck doing one thing, year after year." As well, the constantly shifting dynamic between Fleetwood Mac's band members adds yet another dimension -- after Nicks and Buckingham, who joined the band as a couple, split up, there was a great deal of tension that often had to be mitigated by former member Christine McVie, who was married to the group's bassist John McVie and eventually left the band for good in 1998. Nicks, for the record, insists she doesn't need a buffer anymore. "Look," said Buckingham, "our mantra is: Have a good time and value the experiences we've had over the years; value the friendships and the history that really underpins this whole band." Indeed, there's such a wealth of inspiration lurking in Fleetwood Mac's past, it provides all the creative stimulation the band needs to move forward. Unlike groups such as U2, which tend to focus on reinventing their sound and experimenting with modern editing technology, the members of Fleetwood managed to carve out a niche years ago, and they intend to stay in it. "As you grow into a style you call your own," said Buckingham, "it becomes less important to emulate new things ... We've been lucky enough to become part of the fabric of music culture, and we all try to do our best to move ahead with our senses of ourselves and of the band." Of course, such a reflective and self-aware philosophy may work when it comes to selling records, but when it comes to selling tickets, all marketing signs point toward edgy -- and so it was that "Unleashed" was declared the official tour name. "To me, it represents unleashing the fury, unleashing us back into the universe," said Nicks. Asked whether fans will be able to handle this fury, the singer paused before replying: "I don't know, it's heavy. You may have to wear your armour." - Fleetwood Macplays Toronto's Air Canada Centre tonight, followed by dates in Ottawa, Scotiabank Place, March 23; Montreal, Bell Centre, March 25; a return to Toronto's ACC, March 26; Calgary, Pengrowth Saddledome, May 12; Edmonton, Rexall Centre, May 13; Vancouver, GM Place, May 15.

Great show...they just keep getting better...
The crickets started chirpin' at 20:15,
the band took the stage at 20:20, and they rocked the house.... they appear to be getting better with each performance, Stevie "nailed" her spins during "Stand Back", (10+), Lindsey played guitar, like only he can, just unbelievable, John & Mick were both in top form, the house lights went on at 22:38, &, DavidMN was heading for his 23:15 Greyhound outa town, followed by the band......

Are you stalking him or something? Most of these threads are to talk about the band & their shows, not where David is & what he's doing - who gives a ****?  Anyway, in the process of uploading pics now. May have to wait until tomorrow to post though, I have a ton of stuff to do at home tonight. I'll try to post a review tomorrow as well. In general, I'm very happy I went. It was really exciting to be front row (I've been for Stevie before, but never for Mac.) The crowd up front was pretty well-behaved for the most part, with the exception of a couple of dudes accidentally hitting me in the head a few times when reashing over me trying to get a pic of Stevie on their phone. 2 girls attempted to slide in front of me & Theresa - I don't think so, sweeties. If security let you come closer, fine, but if I have tix in the front row I am going to BE in the very front row.  Other than that, people were very respectful of eachother's space & just enjoyed being close to the stage. Very high energy crowd. Highlights for me were Storms & SYLM (yes, that's right.) I enjoyed Go Insane as well. I'm not usually a big fan of Sara live, but it was quite nice last night. Gyspy had some promising moments at the start & kind of faded a bit for me. Rhiannon was a bore.  GDW had some great vocal moments, so did The Chain. The band as a whole (not sure who started it) f*cked up on The Chain, right before the second "listen to the wind blow" if I recall - timing was way off & LB just looked back at Mick like "um, hello?" They got right back on track though.One thing I noticed was that Stevie's vocals sounded much better than I've heard so far. I'm sure the youtube vids are losing some of the audio quality, and I haven't listened to any mp3's yet to compare. But standing right next to the speaker for Dreams, I distinctly heard more vocal inflection/variation that I was expecting - a bit of vibrato, even. For real. I looked over at Theresa & said "are you hearing this?" So I'm hoping someone recorded the show because I'm interested to hear how it came out, plus there were a few moments I said to myself "did I just hear that?"
