The Ballad of Lucy Jordan. *double swoon* One of my favorite vocal performances EVER.

Okay, Okay! He's best know for and currently still with BC so I thought I would just mention that.

Range means nothing to me. Celine Dion has range, but I'd prefer Lou Reed's speak-sing, Roger Daltry's passion or Neil Young's slightly-out of tune sweetness any day.

As for Lindsey, I just prefer his deeper voice now. I don't care that he hasn't got the range any more.
Joni Mitchell's mature voice suits her quite well, I think. Unfotunately, I can't say the same for a lot of the older artists. Robert Plant for example. He dodged almost every high note the last time I saw him. It made for a rather uneventful show besides the living legend aspect of it. The Egyptian orchestra was nice too.

She did an interview awhile back amd said she sang for years in the wrong range for her voice and now this lower range was actually where she should have been. I love her.

I happen to love a lot of artists with very worn-out, almost "unattractive" voices...it makes the songs more intresting to me. Lou Reed is one of my favorite artists ever. I love him and I love that voice, man. Give me Leonard Cohen any day, any way...love him.

However, I disagree with those who say Macca's voice still sounds as great as it once was. His voice has gotten worse to me, particularly noticable on his last two albums (studio and live). With some artists, it doesn't bug me at all. But given the fact I make such an effort to try and enjoy much of his solo work (sorry), the voice makes a big difference to me. The last thing where he sounded pretty good was Flaming Pie. Yes, he is 62 and we're lucky we have him...but still, if his voice annoys me sometimes I gotta say it- much as I love him.

Lindsey's voice doesn't bother me at all. I love it. It's really sexy. I mean, yeah he sounds out of key here and there, but I get so into the momentum of his music and energy that it doesn't bug me. Plus his guitar playing is sooooo beautiful, I really just don't care. (After viewing how he sang when he was younger, I agree with those who say the current deeper voice is better. Man, his voice was high-pitched!)

I like Stevie's current voice a lot as well. Especially on some of her TISL tracks.

I guess I'm just picky. I can take Dylan and Cohen and Lindsey and Stevie, but Macca just underwhelms me the majority of the time, particularly as of late. But of course, I'm not much of a solo-Macca fan. John and George? Oh baby!!!!

Default Just though of something...

I just heard The Chain (Dance) on my iTunes playlist and Lindsey's "Run, run, run, run, run, run run, run!!" and it made me think of why I love his voice so much even though he has lost some range.

It's because he does interesting things with his voice when he sings. He'll break his voice (like lots of country singers do) or do some vocal run that totally makes the song for me. Stevie does that sometimes too and I was totally taken aback when she broke her voice during some song in England. When they sing a song EXACTLY as it is, melody-wise, on it's respective album, I HATE that! I wanna hear a different vocal, a unique vocal.

Anyways...just wanted to add that.

Exclamation Cool!

*High fives Sharon*

I am all about melody in a song and how singers use their voice. I've teared up listening to songs that had a terrific melody or amazing harmony. Frick, I've cried listening to Lindsey's guitar solos that had ONE part in it that was unique. LOL

Actually I was quite appalled by the vocals at Live8... by just about every "veteran" act, especially Pink Floyd. David Gilmour's voice used to be buttah... now it's just Parkay. Same with Roger Waters, although he was never the most impressive singer to begin with. I guess, like the old saying goes, you use it or you lose it and it's obvious those Pink Floyd boys have not been up to much lately.

As for Lindsey sounding better than ever? Hell-to-the-no!!! (thanks, Whitney ) The Buffalo SYW boot is simply unlistenable with all of his caterwauling. He couldn't find a key in a locksmith's shop. I sometimes wonder if it's actually his hearing that's shot, so he is trying to compensate by yelling out the lyrics and growling. I respect the man, I think he's a brilliant guitarist and producer... and... I'll leave it at that.

As for all of those who are dishing Stevie hate on here, obviously you have not seen her on the Two Voices/Gold Dust tours. I have seen Stevie in concert since RAL and I can honestly say she has never sounded better live. She has so much better control of her pitch and vibrato, and everything seems effortless with her these days. I thought she sounded pitchy and hoarse on the Dance tour... and we can all agree that TISL was a fiasco. But wow... she's back in a big way these days. I think the big difference between Stevie and Lindsey is that she is taking care of her voice and she knows when to hold back, and you can pretty much chalk that up to experience- she has done a lot more singing than Lindsey.

Well The Who blew me away this weekend, They were powerful and determined. Daltry's voice has been a lot weaker during the 80's but he was SO good at live 8. But also the brutal and lovely guitarwork of mr. Townsend spunked bigtime. Lindsey's voice has more depth now, although it weakend too in some spaces. I love how he sang ISA the last tour: more despair. The only point in that song where you can hear his range got a little cut back is in "days when the rain and the sun are gun". But he found a great way to give that line another feel, that totally fits in the song. I'm still amazed about his voice: the way he belts out Come is simply irresistable and if you compare that one with the power of the singing during SHN, NGBA Say Goodbye and the backings on Beautiful Child and Silver Springs I really don't know why we should complain.

And in the studio: listen to the whispering during a song like Blue turns to grey: that's how subtle his voice can be. Awesome performance.
