I don't have to do anything of the sort. I don't know the policies or political affiliations of every company under the sun, nor do you. But I can choose to not give my patronage to companies that I do know about and don't approve of, i.e. IAMS (who abuse animals), Home Depot, and Wal Mart (who exploit not only their workers but also illegal immigrants). The fact that you are equating private citizens who make their own money and then donate it to the Republican party with a company that takes the money I give to them and then ships it off to the Republican party is ridiculous. I won't enable them, just as I won't enable Sinclair by watching their television station. Call it hypocritical all you want, I don't give a fiddler's fart, dear.

Hey, I went there today. I had to return something, however. I also went to Kmart.

I just don't agree with their business practices and won't shop there because of it. Jason just loves to trumpet about how every big company does something that isn't right and he's correct in that respect. But I can choose not to give my money and support to the companies I know about and find to be reprehensible. Wal Mart can build all the houses they want for the poor, it doesn't erase what they're doing to them with their business practices.

It occurs to me that there were a bunch of steps skipped in that "helping the economy" synopsis of Home Depot, too. Stores like Wal Mart help to create the very kind of policies, economy, and economic distribution that forces people to shop at places like Wal Mart. And an all or nothing approach to doing what you can to help the world in the ways you can seems to me to be rather ludicrous, obviously, everyone can't do everything all the time, but everyone can do something much of the time, and it is important that they continue to do so, as vocally and as consistently as they feel they can.

It's all about keeping the poor impoverished in order to keep the rich as wealthy and affluent as possible. It's the cornerstone of American capitalism.

Exactly. It's the new slave labor.

Well, of course I was speaking in general. But, clearly stores like Home Depot, Lowe's, etc., provided a boost to the building industry, which is mostly because of lower interest rates what has driven the current economic recovery. As for the all or nothing approach, I just hate hypocrisy.

When were slaves paid, given medical ins., etc. What was that about Bush being Hitler again

BTW - I fully realize that these companies could and should pay their employees more and they should give them better benefits. I am just calling you on the "slave" comparison.

Fair enough, I suppose. I believe that is a relatively small piece of the picture as far as discussing the economic impact of companies like that, but nevertheless worthy of note. As to the other - hypocrisy is bad, but this really is a situation of "you do what you can", I think. However, your point was taken.

Oh, and I have been cleaning, enjoying the kinda cold but still sunny days - Yesterday I went for a long bikeride for excercise, and discovered a tucked away playground with swings, tennis courts, basketball courts, and a playground, in the berkeley hills near campus. So I jumped out of the swings for awhile, and watched a guy practice his tennis serving, wishing I had my racket so I could practice returning a few.
Today I'm going earlier again to get a little more of the sun/heat. I also got a thick HP book, so I am doing some heavy reading.

Nothing I say is worthy. I'm just a f*cked-up, loony liberal Socialist with ideas crazier than a ****house rat. Right? My opinions would hold much more weight if I came from the Heartland.

I never made the comparison, Amber did. Not that I really disagree with her because it's essentially a form of legalized slavery.
