The Flaming Lips – “I Found This Star On The Ground,” “Butterfly, How Long It Takes To Die” & “Evil Minds” ( with guest Sean Lennon )

The Flaming Lips are pretty into gimmicks right now — they have packaged songs inside of gummy skulls and gummy fetuses this year — and so it should be of no surprise that the band’s latest weird product/release format is light and animation toy called the Strobo Trip. Accompanying the toy is a USB with three unreleased Flaming Lips songs, one of which is six hours long. And, yeah, don’t worry, I got you on this. “I Found This Star On The Ground” is down below in three two-hour chunks, alongside the other two tracks, “Butterfly, How Long It Takes To Die” and “Evil Minds.”

And, if you dare, here’s the six-hour-long “I Found This Star On The Ground.”

Harrison film: Beatles and beyond

It's hard to believe it'll be 10 years this fall since George Harrison died.Despite the tributes that poured out after his death at age 58 on Nov. 29, 2001, Harrison still remains the "quiet" Beatle. His influence on the band hasn't been documented as exhaustively as the more obvious roles of John Lennon and Paul McCartney.

Yacht off Oregon Coast wasn't Ringo's

The yacht that had people talking on the Oregon Coast is now docked in Portland. But the owner may not be who we thought he was.Newspapers on the coast reported former Beatle Ringo Starr" owned it, and that the rock legend was in Astoria for its bicentennial celebration.Well, not so fast. It now appears that the yacht is really owned by a British businessman, not Ringo. The yacht was spotted along the Willamette River Wednesday.

Who was John Lennon? Interview with biographer Tim Riley

Lennon biographer Tim Riley talks about John, his relationships with Yoko Ono and Paul McCartney, and the mystique that surrounds them all.Tim Riley has been a music critic for nearly three decades now. His first book, "Tell Me Why" examines the music of the Beatles, song by song. This month his latest book, Lennon: The Man, the Myth, the Music – the Definitive Life, a 700-plus page biography of John Lennon, is being released. I recently had a chance to talk to Riley about his book and his lifelong fascination with the Beatles. Here are excerpts of our conversation:

Sask.-born jazz musician wins John Lennon music prize

PRINCE ALBERT, Sask. — A Prince Albert-born musician is making waves in the music world.Aaron Jensen has won the jazz component of the annual John Lennon Music Writing Competition for his composition "High and Drysville.Jensen said the prize is very valuable for someone who writes his own music and lyrics."In effect, it works out to about $8,000 worth of recording equipment, which in this day and age is quite an amount of money," Jensen said. "You can actually get a pretty reasonable recording set-up for that."Equipment aside, Jensen said winning the competition is a big deal."There is quite a history of the judges who are listening to all these applicants, and even the artists that I have heard in this year and past years who have been award winners are pretty phenomenal, so even just being put in on the same list as them is quite an honour."

A closer look at the Plastic Ono Band

The clanging of the opening bells on Plastic Ono Band announced John Lennon as an artist independent of that hysterical epidemic known as the Beatles. The succinctly titled "Mother" is an immaculate choice for the kickoff track of Plastic Ono Band. The first peals resound and dissipate slowly, establishing a period of suspense and a steady time signature, both of which reflect the kind of patience necessary for listeners to fully appreciate this album. If the bells are the question, the held breath, then the answer is the wail that, half a minute in, breaks directly on the beat.

Can’t find 10 things to hate about Gordon-Levitt’s ‘hitRECord’

HitRECord is an open-collaborative production company in which artists can submit songs, stories and short films on its website, hitrecord.org, and different artists can contribute or remix the pieces. The company, founded by Golden Globe-nominated actor Joseph Gordon-Levitt, released its first "RECord," "RECollection: Vol. 1," a 26-track RECord that is in the style of a radio station, with Gordon-Levitt as DJ RegularJOE.The album is compiled of artists from many different walks of life that may or may not have already found their way into the public's eye. Most notably, aside from Gordon-Levitt, is Sean Lennon, the son of legendary musicians John Lennon and Yoko Ono. The younger Lennon is a perfect mesh of what his parents sound like, and his song "Nebulullaby" is a shining example of this. Having inherited John Lennon's smooth vocals and Ono's quirky style, Sean Lennon contributes a wonderful tune that fits in well with the rest of the album.

John Lennon Imagined (Beatles & Solo Years) Award-Winning Ensemble Celebrates Music Icon’s Birthday at One Longfellow Square October 8th 2011

When: Saturday, October 8th, 2011, 8 PM show
. Where: One Longfellow Square, 181 State St, Portland, ME. 04101
-Tickets: $30 www.onelongfellowsquare.com (207) 761-1757 , New York, NY – September 7 – Just in time to celebrate John Lennon’s 71st birthday, one of the most unique and compelling interpretations of the late music icon’s compositions comes from 7-piece ensemble The Nu-Utopians (formerly The John Lennon Song Project). The thoughtfully re-imagined tribute celebrates the genius and artistry of the icon’s music.

The 7-piece ensemble, created and led by Rex Fowler of Aztec Two-Step and Tom Dean of Devonsquare performs a live show featuring entertaining storytelling, and like their CD, superb lead singing and 3-part harmonies, plus a host of accomplished musicians on acoustic, electric and bass guitars, cello, violin, mandolin, accordion, chromatic harmonica and light percussion.Concert goers will be treated to exquisite renditions of Lennon’s legendary Beatles songs, as well as from his solo years, often weaving melody, lyric and song together in a series of singles and mini-medleys. These tunes are given surprisingly fresh treatments that often inspire a whole new appreciation for Lennon’s original lyric.

Astrid Kirchherr's photographs of the band's early years in Germany, as well as the intellectual property rights to the images, were originally planned to go on sale in a historic auction Saturday. But at the last hour, the company posted an announcement on their website stating that the entire lot has been sold in advance to an undisclosed buyer. There is much speculation about the identity of the buyer. The New York auction of Astrid's Beatles archives planned for Sunday 25 September is off, so we're having a mini one for you

We just heard from Guernseys auction house in NYC that Astrid Kirchherr's entire Beatles archive has been sold to a single buyer and the auction planned for Sunday 25 September is now off. That's a real shame as we were hoping to buy the rights to a funfair shot, but hey.So we decided that for the Beatles fans who were expecting an auction on Sunday, we would do our own Astrid mini version on eBay, on a very small scale, with three beautiful signed pieces. The auction ends Sunday at 7 pm UK time.

John Lennon Officially Ended the Beatles at Disney World

Leave it to John Lennon to make the Beatles break up official by signing the termination papers while on holiday at Disney World. Lennon, the last of the four to actually sign off on the contract, was the first to shout out “I want a divorce” before he walked out of a meeting at Apple headquarters with the other three members present back in 1969.Both Ringo Starr and George Harrison had already quit by 1968, prior to this incident, yet they were convinced to return, whereas Lennon never did. Then there’s Paul McCartney, the one who publicly announced the news to the press in 1970, declaring, “I’m quitting The Beatles.”After years of red tape and millions of dollars spent, the official dissolution papers were drawn up and ready to be signed off on at the Plaza Hotel in New York in 1974. George and Paul had arranged to fly in and be present, while Ringo signed the necessary documents at an earlier time, while still in England.

Action Pack Presents: JOHN LENNON Sing-Along

We are ringing in John Lennon’s 71st birthday with a no-holds bar celebration of his life and his music. From the skiffle days of Liverpool to the senseless murder at the Dakota Building, Lennon’s impact on the pop culture world is unmatched. He left us so many groundbreaking tunes, both with the Fab Four and as a solo artist, that whittling them down to the definitive Best of the Best for a Sing-Along was no easy feat. But we did it.* We poured thru concerts, films, and amazing archival footage to tell the whole story of the mischievous and intellectual Beatle from start to end. Warning: this show packs a emotional punch.*

Paul McCartney Cites Ray Charles Among His Favorite Beatle Covers

Paul McCartney has chosen R&B legend Ray Charles as among the artists doing his favorite covers of Beatles songs. “(Ray) did a good ‘Eleanor Rigby,’ McCartney declared during a recent interview. It seems McCartney’s flattered whenever anybody, of any level of musical popularity or skill, takes the time to cover his work: “People say ‘You must be cringing when you hear that watered-down, steam-organ version of ‘Good Day Sunshine’!’ but I love it, are you kidding? ” McCartney has been covered more than most artists, but soon that table will turn, as Sir Paul is deep into sessions for his next LP, which will find him covering a set of pop standards. Macca tells Rolling Stone he’s having a great time recording songs he used to sing as a child on New Years Eve’s, with his father on piano.

Ravi Shankar going strong at 91

Baby boomers may remember classical sitar player Ravi Shankar from his legendary appearances at the 1967 Monterey Pop Festival and Woodstock, or his influence on popular music culture at the time. But what the 91-year-old musical icon remembers most about Monterey was hearing live rock 'n' roll for the first time. It was loud, he recalls, and he walked out on Jimi Hendrix burning his guitar. He spoke about his music, his memories of the '60s and his friendship with late Beatle George Harrison.

The Beatles: Hidden Gallery Exhibition Comes to Carnegie Hall

Between performances on The Ed Sullivan Show, The Beatles made their Carnegie Hall debut, playing two 35-minute concerts on February 12, 1964. They never appeared at the Hall again. Until now. From October 8 through December 17, the Fab Four return when Carnegie Hall presents The Beatles: Hidden Gallery, an exhibition in Zankel Hall of more than 30 recently discovered candid images of the seminal rock group, photographed in 1963 and 1964 by British photographer and award-winning cinematographer Paul Berriff. These intimate photographs—shot in England around the time of the group's Carnegie Hall debut—showcase the young band on the cusp of super-stardom, just prior to the worldwide eruption of Beatlemania.
