Default Two of Us: Top 10 Legendary Rock Couples

Gibson lifestyle
July 11, 2011
Thats good to see that both John and Yoko and Stevie and Lindsey are on the list of
Legendary Rock Couples.

Two of Us: Top 10 Legendary Rock Couples

Oftentimes it seems rock and roll couples fall into one of two categories. On the one hand, there’s the tempestuous relationship that produces music reflective of that turbulence. On the other, there’s the subdued partnership that yields batches of sublime music and love songs, while offering up little fodder for the press. Both sides of that spectrum are represented among the 10 couples below. Please tell us who we missed, but keep in mind that we’ve limited our choices to couples in which both partners make music. Hence, no Sid and Nancy, and no Ozzy and Sharon.

1. JOHN LENNON/ YOKO ONO
John Lennon’s solo career, and perhaps new wave music as well, would have charted a far different course were it not for Yoko Ono’s profound influence. From the searing introspection of Plastic Ono Band to the romantic fare on Double Fantasy, Lennon’s work reflected Ono’s muse-like sway. Furthermore, as a musician in her own right, Ono is revered to this day by legions of rockers who possess an avant-garde slant.

10. Lindsey Buckingham / Stevie Nicks
9. Thurston Moore / Kim Gordon (Sonic Youth)
8. Win Butler / Regine Chassagne (Arcade Fire)
7. Debbie Harry / Chris Stein (Blondie)
6. Jack White / Meg White
5. Ray Davies / Chrissie Hynde
4. Ike Turner / Tina Turner
3. Paul McCartney / Linda McCartney
2. Kurt Cobain / Courtney Love
1. JOHN LENNON/ YOKO ONO

Limited-edition Harrison replica guitar impressed many

A musician never forgets his first really good instrument. George Harrison is on record as saying that the black Gretsch Duo Jet he purchased second-hand in 1961 was “the first real decent guitar that I ever had.” This particular Gretsch wasn’t something he used sparingly or just for practice. It served as Harrison’s main guitar during the early years of The Beatles, both in concert (at hometown gigs in Liverpool, England, and during the band’s residencies in Hamburg, Germany) and in the studio (he played it on most of his band’s debut album).

Paul McCartney has hinted that he and Ringo Starr may put together a new version of The Beatles for the Olympic opening ceremony

Speaking on US TV, he nodded when asked whether he would appear at the London games. But after quickly realising he may have said too much he backtracked.

McCartney then said: "I hear there's a rumour that I might be involved." However when referring to The Beatles he said: "I hear they're planning this sort of music."

According to The Sun an insider said: "Macca was just being coy about the details. He has been speaking to organisers and has said he'd love to be involved with the games in some way. The organisers want the music legend to appear alongside other big British acts. And they also want Ringo onstage as well to make it extra special."

Imagine... Lennon: the New York Years, BBC One, review

Chris Harvey reviews Michael Epstein's film about John Lennon and Yoko Ono's time spent in New York City in the 1970s.Imagine… Lennon: the New York Years (BBC One) told the story of John Lennon when he was living in the US between 1971 and his death in 1980. It was a time which appeared to be defined in great part by Lennon’s relationship with Yoko Ono – musically, politically and emotionally – and in particular by their period of separation in the mid-Seventies.

'A show that will touch your heart'

Anyone who has ever tried to cover "Imagine" and get away with it will testify to what a tough cookie Yoko Ono can be.When it comes to fiercely guarding her husband John Lennon's legacy, Ono makes headlines fairly often — most recently for allegedly threatening to sue a bar in Scotland named "Lennon's Pub."Sure, she's strict. But for the last 30 years as widow of the most famous singer from the most famous band ever, Ono, 78, has also tirelessly devoted herself to keeping Lennon's memory alive. As part of those efforts, visitors to Newport, R.I., this weekend will have a chance to take in 100 different sketches, free-hand drawings, caricatures and illustrations by Lennon, who attended the Liverpool School of Art from 1957-60 and whose talent in that arena surprised Ono."I loved John's style," she says. "I didn't expect that from a pop star or a rock star. When I first saw, I was totally amazed. Since then, I'm still amazed."

3XN Designed Museum of Liverpool to Launch July 19, 2011

The new Museum of Liverpool, opening on July 19, will not only tell the story of its importance as one of the World's great ports or about its cultural influence, such as with the Beatles phenomenon. It will also serve as a meeting point for History, the People of Liverpool and visitors from around the globe. Therefore, according to the Architect, Kim Herforth Nielsen, the structure functions as much more than just a Building or a Museum.

The Beatles' Strangest Gig

As we all know, there is a time in every performer’s career where they are “complete unknowns.” Yes, there was a time, really not so long ago, when no one knew or had ever even heard of Frank Sinatra or Woody Allen or Meryl Streep. And so it was with the greatest, most famous, most deified show biz act of the 20th century: The Beatles.
In the summer of 1960, none of the usually-employed Beatles even had a day job. And like us all, the boys wanted to make some money. The then-foursome consisting of John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Stuart Sutcliffe played the oddest gig in the Beatles’ long and storied history.

Imagine... if there’d been a happy ending

Had there been any poetic justice to John Lennon’s life, his move to New York to escape the worst excesses of London’s tabloid press and police officers (so what else is new?) would have had a happy ending.“He was an artist. Why would you kill an artist?” Yoko Ono choked on her continuing grief at the end of Imagine – Lennon: The New York Years (BBC 1).There was no happy ending. In fact, Michael Epstein’s excellent film, introduced by Alan Yentob, showed how John Lennon’s pursuit of happiness, as part of the perceived American dream he’d trusted, had given him but a few short years of peace before he was shot dead on his doorstep.Of course we knew all that already. Lennon’s story has been told many times before – but perhaps not quite so honestly and lyrically as was done here.

Must it be Lennon or McCartney ?

Despite a lot of petty side-taking, the greatest songwriting partnership in history was precisely that: a partnership. Neil McCormick on The Beatles.POOR old Paul McCartney. "It's going down in posterity that John was the cool one and Paul was a bit soppy," he complained last year. Yet after decades of critical abuse, he seems to have finally succeeded in putting memories of The Frog Chorus to rest, salvaging some dignity with the much-lauded Anthology collection of Beatles out-takes, earning generally positive reviews of his back-to-basics solo album (Flaming Pie) and being the subject of an authorised biography ('Paul McCartney: Many Years from Now' by Barry Miles) that reaffirms his creative importance in the Beatles set-up.

Beatles 'reunion' a no-go, according to Julian Lennon
July 14, 2011

Published reports have been circulating for the past few days about a potential Beatles’ “reunion” concert for London’s 2012 Olympics that would feature surviving Beatles Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr, as well as John Lennon’s son Julian, and George Harrison’s son, Dhani. Now Julian Lennon is saying, don’t even think about it.* “There will never be a Beatles reunion because two of the members of the band have since passed,” Lennon posted on his Facebook page. “And no one could, or should, try to replace them...End of...x.”* We agree. It’s ludicrous to call the above configuration any semblance of the Beatles. And it’s not a Beatles reunion just because the sons of Lennon and Harrison may stand in for their dads.

Missing John Lennon psychedelic eye mosaic from Liverpool’s garden festival reunited with owners

A MOSAIC designed by John Lennon was reunited with its owners after being lost for more than two decades. There are now hopes the Psychedelic Eye will return to the Beatle’s home city of Liverpool, from where it went missing in 1987.
The custom-made piece, which is constructed from more than 17,500 ceramic tiles each no bigger than a quarter of an inch square, was originally installed at the end of Lennon’s swimming pool in his mansion at Kenwood, Surrey, where the hits Yellow Submarine and Hey Jude were composed.Lennon sold the house in 1968, and in 1982 it was sold to an anonymous Swedish businessman.

Meeting the Beatles—Again

After shooting photos of a 1964 concert in Washington, D.C., Mike Mitchell didn't really know what he had. The 18-year-old photographer marked the rolls of film "Beedles."Almost half a century later, nearly 50 never-before-seen Beatles photographs, including images of the band's first-ever U.S. concert, will be auctioned at Christie's on Wednesday, with a presale estimate of $100,000. The black-and-white photographs feature a sweating and joyful Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr bouncing at the drums and a policeman using bullets as earplugs to block the screams from more than 8,000 fans. The priciest photographs are expected to sell for $4,000 to $6,000 each.

Paddy Shennan’s TV review: Imagine . . . Lennon: The New York Years (BBC1)

THERE was a lot to admire about the late John Lennon’s character, as laid bare in the excellent Imagine . . . Lennon: The New York Years (BBC1, Tuesday).
But also a lot to give you cause to feel sorry for him. Here, yet again, was proof that untold wealth and worldwide fame are no guarantees of a happy and fulfilled life.
And yet Lennon’s New York adventure had started so positively – so much so that it even seemed as if he had forgotten about the brilliance of his home city.“John would often say ‘I should have been born in New York City’,” Yoko Ono told us.

John Lennon's Decade Of Underachievement? Blame New York

If there’s one thing last night’s BBC One documentary Lennon: The New York Years proved, it’s that John Lennon and Yoko Ono enjoyed a somewhat complex relationship – the 1970s counterculture’s Cheryl and Ashley, if you will – oh, and that the Feds were out to get him. But what about the music? Lennon spent the last nine years of his life in New York City (with a brief sojourn in Los Angeles), plenty of time to cement a reputation as the coolest and most creative of Beatles – but did he manage it?

MsLinds, that article about "John's Decade of Underachievement" left a very bad taste in my mouth. Why are people so ignorant? And why do these people have the right to be published on the Internet for all to read and sway, or in print so it is there forever? John's amazing music speaks for itself.

That is all I will say.
