You should all go back in time when Secret Love was released as a single. All of you raved about what a great song it was and bla bla bla. Me and a small handful of other Ledgies said it wasn't anything special and now all of us agree that it is not Grammy nominated worthy.

Listen to the wind blow, watch the sunrise.

^^^ I don't see your logic here. Secret Love can and was rated on several different criteria. Is it a good 'Stevie' song? How does it fare in the context of the album? Is it Grammy-worthy? The answer to those can be 'Yes!', 'Average' and 'Hell, no', without a shred of inconsistency.

I love the fact that Stevie put a submission in for the Grammy's...but I just wish she picked more songs then "Soilders Angel" and "Secret Love" ...Soilder's Angel hasnt even been put out as a single yet...has it?!? I would have picked some better selections like For What its Worth, Moonlight, or Annabel Lee...

but I do wish Stevie all the best =P

This doesn't really relate to anything in the discussion except for this statement, and it's not even directed at any one person or group here, but the thing that kind of irks me is when people say there's no good music anymore yet they wouldn't dare venture off the well worn and beaten path of top 40 radio. As much as internet piracy has caused major structural damage to the music industry machine the availability of music and recording software have made home recording such an easy thing that many artists can put their own recordings online, sell CD's, have downloads from their websites and all sorts of avenues to get their music heard. There are thousands of blogs that promote every genre of music out there from the biggest names to the person who just writes songs simply because they love to record. How many of you will listen to a scratchy Stevie demo that's sounds like it's been dubbed from cassette to cassette about a dozen times before being committed to digital yet wouldn't consider listening to recording from a new talented artist just because he recorded his songs in his basement. I'm not condemning anyone for this, just sort of pointing out that there is amazing music just beyond itunes and the radio dial. And the best part is many music blogs that feature new artists will have sample mp3's and youtube videos so you can check these guys out before you buy.

I agree with you wholeheartedly! I *love* discovering new bands, and even old bands that I'm not familiar with. I'd say that nearly 50% of my music collection is stuff that iTunes recommended to me in the past 5 years, mostly new artists from the same time period, and almost everytime I've been amazed at how good it is in detecting my tastes - and equally amazed that I still listen to music very few others ever bother with even though it was an iTunes promoted band/artist/album.

I also will buy the album playing in my local record store when I go in if I like the mood/vocals. That's how I discovered Neko Case. And Art Brut as well, though I don't usually publically admit to loving his music!

Although I do see the benefit of music being more DIY these days, I have to admit that there is so much putrid garbage out there. Discovering interesting music really is like finding a needle in a haystack. And it's great if you have time to sift through multiple sources to discover the next great thing. But for the rest of us, being spoonfed new music (via mainstream media like radio) is the only practicable way to discover new music whilst having some semblance of a life.

One unexpectedly good source for new music that I have discovered is the Palladia channel. In between programs they usually play 2 or 3 music videos to fill the void, and usually they play pretty interesting stuff. That's where I first heard/saw La Roue's "Bulletproof," which is one of my all-time favorite guilty pleasure singles.

Palladia is great! LoGo's PopLab has been a good source of new tunes for me as well as NewNowNext.

Sometimes I just dive right in and buy all sorts of odd stuff. I was sure that The Bravery were going to be a favorite band of mine after sampling one song on iTunes. Meh.. not so much after buying the whole album. Win some / Lose some.

I'm putting big money down on Soldier's Angel getting a nomination for Best Rock Song, and I even think it could have a decent shot at taking home the award. The category is about composition. It's a perfect chance to give an aging legend an award, show a military friendly face, and even include Lindsey in the show. Seriously, anyone want to take my bet?

That's funny, these shows you mention esp. the bolded ones, are where my brother discovers new artists all the time. I honestly don't know anyone who buys more cd's & new artists than my dear older brother. More often than not, he usually turns me onto newer stuff/artists, cause I generally don't have the time to sift through Itunes recommendations etc. Most often I have found that the artist's that they recommend are just sound alike/copycat's of artists I love and adore already...fine tuned marketing. Itunes & now Facehook, be careful what you "like".

I still surmise that "Secret Love was Stevie's finest single since ROF (cept' for perhaps POTU - which was just sent to AOR radio as a promo single & rarely played beyond clubs & the #1 dance charts success that version enjoyed)

It's just that the clamor died down significantly once most heard the entire IYD recording. The whole record glistened & overflowed with could be singles (Moonlight, IYD, FWIW, Annabel Lee, New Orleans, Everybody Love You, etc.), much less the 1st coveted single choice .However SL did achieve top 20 AC chart status & received significantly more radio spins than FWIW. I heard it played here in Denver on KBCO pretty frequently in March through May. So its pretty obvious as to why "they" chose to submit SL for nomination in certain categories.

Sometimes, yes, this is totally the case. But I don't think it matters, ultimately. Let me use the Yeah Yeah Yeahs as an example. Critics around the world have noticed that the band has a sound - and even a vocalist - remarkably similar to Siouxsie and the Banshees circa 1988-1992. While it would be easy to pass them off as a copycat or sound-alike band, the fact remains that they've had great commercial success with a fan base who has likely never even heard of Siouxsie.

Lets talk Gaga for a moment. As a guy who grew up listening to Madonna from her first single "Everybody" when I was 10 years old all the way to the present... I have to say there are Gaga songs/videos/fashion statements that seem to me to be a complete and total ripoff. At the same time, it''s hard to deny that Gaga has become a worldwide sensation by providing a product that people were craving and clearly not getting enough of. If Madonna were filling that role, Gaga would never have stood a chance.

(speaking of which, I've heard the new Madonna album will feature Nicki Minaj which is enough to make me run screaming)

I guess what I'm trying to say is that it's inevitable that a band or singer will sound like some other band or singer somewhere else in space or time. This doesn't diminish their viability or creativity in any way and it certainly doesn't take away from the original or make it 'lesser'. If anything, it elevates the originals to a place of homage and tribute. Music, like fashion, comes in cycles that repeat. Never quite the same, but with obvious likenesses paying respects to an earlier era.

I am rambling. I could talk music all day.

I agree. I think Annabel Lee is Grammy nomination worthy. Not sure about any of the other tracks...

Stevie has too much talent to win a grammy.
