And some artists actually use bad grammar to...creat good art! Hint: Stevie Nicks isn't one of them. Tori Amos and Bruce Springsteen are, though, and their writing comes off as more intelligent for it.

That was a actually a Stevie reference as in "I'm not a witch, get a life" so I did not mean it as seriously as you may have taken it.

OMG, this is really a slippery slope, when we start mulling over who is the reigning Queen of Rock!! It's an un-winnable war! So let the victors be Stevie, Debbie & Tina. TIED
![]() They all have had huge impact's in music and pop culture in their own unique, varied ways. That is why they all STAND OUT as originals (period!!) Having said that, Stevie is my favorite female singer in music overall since 1981, and no-one has ever come close to knocking her out of that spot...and I love a diverse potpourri of music genres. So go ahead....HIT it! knock each other out......... ![]() Last edited by Christopher; 07-10-2010 at 09:40 AM.. |

I had to vote for Joan Jett! as a fellow female musician she's had more of an influence on me wanting to rock than any of the others. Love the majority of the nominees...but I've got no idea who Kim Gordon is lol

The only living/Active competion for Stevie for me is Ann Wilson. And of the 2 Anne's voice has clearly hald up WAY better. And like someone said, compare their 2 versions of Rock and Roll, although liets be fair the originator of that song, robert Plant can't do it justice like Anne anymore either. And I guess even Stevie at her vocal peak in the 70's didn't have a voice as strong as Anne. The only edge she had was in wild off track incoherentness mixed in with her powerful vocals.
But I really don't understand the whole Blondie/Debbie Harry thing ![]()

First off, no rock. Atomic gets close, as do others, but only in the sense of "hey, that's a rockin' song!" Grammar really doesn't matter, just listen to 90% of music. Yes, Debbie Harry is amazingggg to say the least. But she just doesn't compare Stevie is number 4 here, behind Ann Wilson, Grace Slick, and Janis Joplin. http://digitaldreamdoor.nutsie.com/p...alists-fe.html Stevie is 17 here, Debbie 23 http://digitaldreamdoor.nutsie.com/p...ts-female.html Sadly 2 links is all I can find outside of other forums, feel free to post more. Madonna cites her influences as Led Zeppelin, the Carpenters, and the Supremes. So if Debbie paved the way for her, she isn't aware of it. Stevie paved the way much more than her, Janis paved the way for Stevie much more. It's an endless cycle really. I can't find much on Debbie's influence either, what artists cite her as a huge influence? |

Deb Harry was great, and it sounds like she has a new Blondie album that could help her with this sort of poll. Debbie was gorgeous, an icon, wrote well, sang well, and has the brilliant 'Parallel Lines' album. I still enjoy 'Eat To The Beat' in its entirety. The other albums- for me, ehhh. To me, her most 'rocking' vocal was on that soundtrack song, 'Call Me', I still love it, even though it was played to death and it's subjective as to whether 'Call Me' was even a rock song. It was good, whatever it was.
Deb had great style, great presence, and a voice that she used well. She had the musical innovation to introduce white audiences to a form of rap with Rapture and likely was a huger influence on black culture than on white with that one song. That's an impressive accomplishment for a white woman, although I dislike rap music- I should, I'm a white man. (I hated rap in my 20s, so it's not that I'm now a middle aged white man!) Deb Harry's voice? I liked it a lot, don't know that it's a great instrument. And I think 'The Tide Is High' is a God-awful horrible song and maybe killed Blondie's career. Still, no-one has a perfect career, but Deb herself was pretty damned perfect, and also has writing talent. She was a great icon of the 70s and 80s. Greatest female rock singer, or 'queen of rock and roll'?? if some say that, I won't argue, but I can say that she was awesome, maybe will be awesome on the coming album, and that's good enough for me. I don't consider Tina Turner a rock and roll singer. Sorry. And I like her, more than a little. Joan Jett competed in a boys game and is very good live performer, tons of charisma. Her voice- effective, but, lets face it, limited. Her guitar playing- very good- she's got those chords she can play down and down well. Not a lot of range. But she's great at what she does. Stevie- heck yeah, though she's been bordering on dull for a long time. The '75 to '89 Stevie wins hands down, for me. Someone wrote that by the time Elvis Presley died, he was no longer the 'King' of Rock and Roll. Ask your father, or grandfather, whichever the case. Better yet, ask their wives. I'm no Elvis megafan at all, but he always was and still is widely recognized as The King of Rock and Roll. And at his death, it was the term most widely used to describe him. (What were they gonna say, master thespian?) Janis Joplin, Oh, Janis. So good and also so horrible, in an excellent way. Her recording career lasted all of 3 years. Historically, her presence jarred the country and she scared the hell of out of anyone over the age of 30. That's a talent in itself! I think she had some major talent that became obstructed (she actually could sing if you explore her work) when she let 'screaming freak show' define and then kill her. Ann Wilson- the best pipes ever, I think. Should have had a longer span of hitmaking years, though Heart had two very successful runs. What a singer. Bonnie Raitt? What a beautiful vocal instrument, at times. 'That Song About The Midway' alone makes me want to like her, always. Queen of Rock and Roll? ****, isn't it Lady Gaga? And no, I don't like her. Yet. I'm being encouaged to try to. This is The Ledge. So, I'll conclude that Stevie Nicks has to be the correct answer. Last edited by Nikolaj; 07-10-2010 at 01:56 AM.. |

One Way Or Another 11:59 Living In the Real World Nothing Is Real But The Girl Maria No Exit - to name just a few. OF COURSE they are rock songs. No Blondie isn't hard rock or whatever but they are still rock and roll musicians. They are in the R&R Hall of Fame, not the elevator music hall of fame. Quote:
