So what has you shutting your eyes tight, or screaming for momma in the theater or in front of the tv set?
![]() To be honest, gore fests don’t faze me at all. I could watch something like ‘The Exorcist’ or the more recent ‘The Crazies’ for example, and have a good chuckle. Here’s one film I think that was pretty eerie. It’s a 1960’s movie I saw on tv called ‘The Haunting’. Basically, a bunch of investigators stay over at a supposedly haunted house to test the truth of its reputation. In one scene (I’m typing this from memory so I hope I got it right) two women (actresses Julie Harris and Claire Bloom) are cowering in bed in the dark as they hear very loud banging noises on their door from outside made by some unknown force. Anyways, after it quiets down, one of the ladies tells the other that she feels safer with her friend holding her hand. The other woman has a look of puzzlement on her face and answers – “but that’s not my hand you’re holding!” Eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeek! ![]() ‘The Haunting’ was later remade with Liam Neeson and Catherine Zeta Jones but it sucked. It was filled with special effects leaving nothing to the imagination. What’s scary is what you don’t see, like in the original version. On that same note, ‘The Blair Witch Project’ was pretty creepy to me too. No gore or CGI at all, just the power of suggestion. Last edited by greendaze5; 03-24-2010 at 09:22 AM.. Reason: typo |

Videodrome.
Purely because of how damn true it is. That the TV gets inside your head and destroys you. Considering that this film was made in 1983, it's so damn creepy. Basically: Max Renn (James Woods) is the president of CIVIC-TV, a sleazy Toronto UHF television station specializing in sensationalistic programming. Displeased with his station's current lineup, Renn is on a seemingly endless quest for something that isn't so "soft" and will "break through" to a new audience. One morning Renn is summoned to the clandestine office of Harlan, who operates CIVIC-TV's pirate satellite dish which can pirate broadcasts from as far away as Asia. Harlan shows Renn "Videodrome," a plotless television show apparently being broadcast out of Malaysia, which depicts the brutal torture and eventual murder of anonymous victims in a bizarre, reddish-orange chamber. Believing this to be the future of television— (staged) snuff TV—Renn orders Harlan to begin pirating the show. Appearing on a talk show, Renn defends his station's programming choices to Nicki Brand (Debbie Harry), a sadomasochistic psychiatrist, and Professor Brian O'Blivion, a pop-culture analyst and philosopher who will only appear on television if his image is broadcast into the studio, onto a television, from a remote location. O'Blivion hijacks the interview and delivers a speech prophesying a future in which television supplants real life. Renn dates Nikki, who is sexually aroused when Renn shows her an episode of Videodrome and coaxes him into having sex with her while they watch it. Renn goes once again to Harlan's office, where Harlan informs him the signal delay which caused it to appear to be coming from Malaysia was a ploy by the broadcaster. In fact, Videodrome is being broadcast out of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Renn tells Nikki of his discovery and she excitedly goes to Pittsburgh to try and audition for the show. When Nikki fails to return to Toronto, Renn contacts Masha, and asks her to help him find out the truth about Videodrome. Through Masha, Renn learns that not only is the footage in Videodrome not faked, but Videodrome is the public "face" of a political ideology movement with unspecified but apparently violent goals. Masha further informs Renn that Brian O'Blivion knows about Videodrome. Max tracks down O'Blivion's office to The Cathode Ray Mission, a mission where homeless individuals are provided food, shelter, and clothing, and encouraged to engage in marathon sessions of television viewing. Renn discovers the mission is run by O'Blivion's daughter, Bianca. Bianca tells Renn these are side-effects from having viewed Videodrome, which is in fact the carrier of a malicious broadcast signal that causes the viewer to develop a malignant brain tumour. Brian O'Blivion helped to create it as part of his vision for the future, but when he found out it was to be used for malevolent purposes, he attempted to stop his partners; they used his own invention to kill him. In the year before his death, O'Blivion recorded tens of thousands of videos, which now form the basis of his television appearances. Afterwards, Renn takes refuge on a derelict boat in an abandoned harbour, where Nikki appears to him on television. She tells him he has weakened Videodrome, but in order to completely defeat it, he has to "leave the old flesh." The television then shows an image of Renn shooting himself in the head, which causes the set to explode, splattering the deck of the ship with bloody, human intestines. Imitating what he has just seen on TV, Renn says his final words, "Long live the New Flesh", and then he pulls the trigger. Mm that was damn long. I agree about gore... nothing scary about it.
To this day, I still think the scariest film I've ever seen was the original "Psycho". I have to agree, though, that "Videodrome" was pretty creepy. I saw it only once when it came out in 1983, and I can still picture that woman with the (German?) accent saying "Videodrome" in that creepy way. |

She creeps the heck outta me! Especially when Max 'finds' her in his bed and there's nothing there and again when He's whipping Debbie Harry and she turns around having turned into Masha. eeeuugh

And The Descent is, for me, one of the best horror movies in the last 10 years or more. I haven't seen the sequel yet, but I'm hoping they don't cock it up too bad.I couldn't watch The Ruins, because the book was so damn ridiculously bad, I wanted to torch it - it had such a great concept, but in the end, I ended up having to write a review entitled something like "Audrey II + Dig Dug + Clownshoes = The Ruins," wherein I offered a detailed suggestion on how Scott Smith could fix the whole thing (hint: it involved Steve Martin dressed as a dentist rocketing out of the hole in the hill on a motorcycle a la Meatloaf 's Bat Out of Hell album cover, after which he would proceed to perform root canals, sans anesthesia, on the stupid kids & surly Mexicans alike before punching them all in the face, and then ending in a musical extravaganza composed entirely of Nextel chirps and soft-shoe dance moves.) I even 'shopped him a new book cover to match! I'm so helpful. Quote:
Oh man. If the movie spooked you, do not ever play the games. Playing Silent Hill 2 is one of the creepiest things I've ever experienced. King really hated the Kubrick version of his story, but I think it was way better than the more recent remake Mick Garris did. In fact, it's one of my fav horror movies. The couple of seconds where Wendy runs upstairs in the hotel only to spy the dude in the ass-less bear suit getting up close and, er, personal with the dude in the tux is just classic. Good choice! You should check out the original, which is a Spanish film called [REC] - this is one of the only times I've ever thought the remake was better than the original, even if it was only slightly. Would be curious to see what you think if you check it out for comparison's sake.
