Lol! Stevie ought to give crescent moon necklaces to all of us who have been her fans for 25 years or more!! We've stuck by her longer than a lot of her 'so-called friends' have!!

that's an interesting comment.

fans exist in a sphere far removed from the nitty gritty human version of stevie, especially since stevie came of age as a celebrity in a time when there was no TMZ, 24-hour news, or paparazzi. stevie was allowed the luxury of cultivating her public image on her own terms, and has managed to maintain an air of sophistication and wholesomeness despite spending almost a third of her life as a drug addict.

i'm not interested in indicting stevie as a bad person, but to imply that fans have been more loyal than people who knew/know her in real life is a false and unfair analogy. as a fan, you get what stevie gives you and only what she gives you. and compared to other artists, it's really not much. this allows fans to create a fiction about stevie's real life in order to connect the dots in the stevie nicks scavenger game.

the people she surrounds herself with are people whose responsibility it is to essentially keep her segregated from reality. this is a woman who hasn't driven in over 30 years and probably couldn't tell you the price of a gallon of milk. this is a woman who thought her hair turned grey not because she was in her 40's but because she was going through klonopin withdrawal. this is a woman who gave prescription meds to her underling to see what kind of effect it had. if you've ever had a delusional person in your life, you know how difficult it is to sustain their fantasies and act as a buffer between them and the real world. you also know how quickly you can be tossed out of their favor if you disagree with them or offer them a view of reality or themselves that they dislike. this is the situation the people in stevie's real circle are in. and frankly, i don't blame some of them for getting sick of it.

I think holidayroad's comment was meant in a light-hearted joking manner, not as a serious demand. Hence beginning it with "LOL".

i realize this. but it brought to light a mentality i've noticed among stevie fans over the years. my response was respectful and it's clear i wasn't attacking holidayroad.

Great post, Carrie. You're absolutely right... so many rabid Stevie fans feel as if they have some sort of entitlement to the woman... some sort of ownership. When in reality, we really don't know anything about who the REAL Stevie is. We know and love the public persona extremely well... but that's the extent of it.

I can honestly say that I'm just fine with that. Odds are, she's probably a pretty taxing and annoying person to be around in a day to day fashion. I have no doubts she's quite deluded and demanding... after all, she's been rich and famous pretty much all of her adult life... and before that, she was the daughter of a tycoon. She's made it a point of saying throughout her career that once she "made it," that she never looked at a price tag again, and really knows nothing of regular life. I think knowing her personally would probably sour me to her music... which I would NOT want.

I have somewhat comparable first hand experience of such people. My boyfriend is friends with a local Charlotte celeb couple. They're driven around in a $400,000 Maybach... own tens of millions of dollars in mansions/penthouses in just the Charlotte area alone, have a private jet, they hang out with some of the biggest sports and music stars in the world, etc. While this particular couple may be fun to spend an evening with once or twice a year, that's about all I can tolerate. They're extremely friendly, well meaning people... but their lack of understanding and patience for the real world is maddening. Even the way they expect their "friends" to elevate them... and jump through hoops for their time is blood curdling.

In the end, saying we know or even have a right to Stevie is like saying we know or have a right to our garbage collectors . We know both of their public personas and jobs very well. We generally know what to expect of them. But we know nothing of their day to day lives at home, or what goes on behind their closed doors. And why would we, to be honest?

This always came up when Michael and I would turn TMZ on. Fleetwood Mac's drama would be nowhere near as captivating as it is now, had it been chronicled by the media at the time. And people definitely would not be as quick to romanticize Stevie's drug years if she'd been hounded by the paps at the time. You know we would have had breaking news updates of Stevie arriving at Betty Ford.

no, you're right. nobody thinks lindsay lohan's struggles with drugs are poetic. in fact, several people on here who idolize stevie have made some redick comments about LL any time the "lindsay wants to portray stevie" story comes up. and it was the same thing when LL covered EO17. it's funny to me. in many ways LL is the latter-day stevie, between the drug issues, the fall from grace, and the looooong list of "romantic" partners. the biggest difference is that stevie got to do all of that in relative privacy. oh, and lindsay actually did have the ****ty upbringing to go along with her out of control behavior.

fwiw, I still wouldn't want her to portray Stevie. But not because I think Stevie is better, just that LL is too out of her mind these days to do anything properly. Ironic as it is coming from her, I agree with Stevie's assessment that she needs to clean the f*ck up before even thinking of playing her in a movie.

from what i've heard, she's pretty much uninsurable at this point. it'll be a while before she gets any work.

Dang. Actually, the last time I watched Mean Girls, I could kinda-sorta-maaaaybe see a bit of Stevie in her. Too bad it isn't 2004 anymore.
