Of course...

The books are kinda cool because they're all western-countryfied recipes, like how to make biscuits over an open fire in a cast iron skillet (and I'm gonna try it one of these days) and bunches of spicy chilli recipes (so you can taste it since you've killed your taste buds after years of smoking). And they're chock full with beautiful photos of both the food and of all these cowboy western scenes.

There's a one-pan cake recipe out of it that's made with coffee I make a lot! And once you sprinkle the tobacco on top, it's to die for.

I know! When they sent them to me, I was like "wth is this?" But they're award winning recipes from people across the country who submitted them, all really good. And all tobacco free!

EXPLAIN THAT, FRANCESCA!!!
Well, is it necessary to quote the famous Madonna's T-shirt in "Papa Don't Preach" video?

Soup is great: clear soups, cream soups, cold soups, hot soups.

Campbell's Cream of Mushroom should be thrown out like the nux vomica it is.

In general, I avoid canned soups (although there are some good ones available) because of the extremely high sodium content. But that shouldn't deter many of you who don't have blood pressure problems.

Here's how I make my own big pot of vegetable soup. I like knowing about everything that went into the soup I'm eating.

Baby red potatoes
Baby carrots
Baby bok choy
Celery with hearts
1 yellow onion
Yellow (or summer) squash
Cauliflower
Fresh dill
Pepper

Cut it all up & throw it all in a pot of water. Simmer for at least two hours. Sprinkle Kretschmer toasted wheat germ over your bowl of soup (it has a great sweet taste).

Mmm-mmm...Natural soup goodness! No preservatives, no chemicals, no weird **** off the elements table!

Yes, because I have absolutely no idea what it says. Never been a Madonna fan.

Hey, David - I've tried to make soups with basically those ingredients and it comes out pretty bland. Or did I make stew? Either way. And you didn't put any kind of meat chunk in your broth for flavor, and you didn't mention using chicken broth or beef broth for the water. Does yours really taste good? Is it bland? Did I imagine my whole soup problem?

I make basically the same soup only with chicken stock instead of water. I've done it with just water but I always end up putting in a ton of garlic for flavor because I think it's too bland. I'm a garlic ho.

The absence of salt is undoubtedly what makes it taste bland to you, especially if you eat a lot of canned soup. A can of chicken broth or even vegetable broth would certainly add flavor, but a single can of that contains more than 1,000 mgs of sodium, so those with hypertension need to steer clear.

But certainly try your favorite seasonings in it next time, or add various combinations of herbs (dill, coriander, thyme, etc.). Or drop some cubes of sirloin in (dredge the sirloin cubes in flour & seasoning & then sear them for an extra boost of flavorful goodness).

You can really boost the flavor (without adding too much salt) of a homemade soup by carmelizing onions, or by sauteing onions adding some mushrooms, and tossing in some wine. Also, a few drops of vinegar (I like white balsamic) makes bean soup really tasty.
I have also been using those aseptic boxed veg and chicken stocks (organic) that you can get inexpensively at Trader Joes, or on sale at whole paycheck.

of course, Amber, you may no longer trust me, because of differing Wolfgang Puck soup opinions

I think I just used water, too. That's probably it. So, you sleep with people for garlic?

David - I know I put hella salt in it. I salt everything. I'm a salt ho. I salt my chips, even. And I think I put in not sirloin but chicken, which is less flavorfull.
Anyway, i do need to add more herbs and things, and perhaps even more onion. I don't think I knew as many things the last time I made soup.

I'm thinking, David, I've seen at Whole Foods various low sodium or vegetable based etc. broths - that could be helpful as well.
My mom used to plop a giant hamhock in a huge pot of lentils. They were good. I'm suprised no one else mentioned lentils here, they are extremely nutritious and very filling compared to a lot of soups. They are also cheap.

Thanks, guys - I think I'll retry the soup thing this weekend

Edit - no Eliza, those sound like good ideas. I will not hold your liking of WP soups against you. And why aren't my flipping emoticons working?!?!?!?! Dammit! I'm like a girl without a face!

ANYTHING from Trader Joe's is great!

Their frozen shrimp & vegetable stir-fry kit is TO DIE for! Ditto their Blackened Cajun Salmon.
