For some reason I remember Phyllis Diller in that role, but I'm probably just confused as usual.

I was never freaked out by the Wicked Witch of the West. She just reminded me of my great aunt for some reason (not the personality, the looks ). My mom however was always freaked out by the flying monkeys.

Yeah, I know people who have irrational fears of flying monkeys and oompa loompas. Neither seemed scary at all to me.

The doll thing from "Child's Play" terrified me when I firs saw it - I had to put all my dolls in the loft - I couldn't sleep with them in the same room.... but I was young then.

And when I was very young the "Day of The Triffids" scared me... but I was only about 4 and I've never seen it since... was it even a film?? or was it a series.... anyway it was in black and white and I remember hiding my face in my teddy at the scary bits

You reminded me, I had this fear of this thing in one of the those '70s PBS series that used to talk about things like Bigfoot. Anybody remember what show I mean? Not "In Search Of..." but it aired around that time & had a narrator as well. In one spot this person goes to sleep over a hundred years ago & wakes up to see this hooded figure in black with a really white face. The person screams & wakes up the other person in the room, who sees the figure disappear behind a grandfather clock. The second person describes what happens to others because the first person has died of fright after all his/her hair turned white. After seeing this as a kid I was scared of opening my eyes when I woke up at night because there might be something hiding in the room that would scare me to death. (Hi, Marissa. )
I know it's not from a movie, but the other post just reminded me of this fear.

Norman Bates. The first time I tried to watch that movie I couldn't get through it and quit about 10 minutes before the end (when I later figured that out I was annoyed...but my mom and I tried to watch it at night with the window open and it was windy and...). I had to lock the door whilst showering and peak out every one and a while. Now I can get through it and quite enjoy it. But what's creepy about him is that he doesn't get everything he's doing and that it's wrong cuz uh...his nuts.

"We're all a little mad some times"

I laughed at most of Carrie until the end when the arm sticks out of the ground cuz I just wasn't ready for that. I literally jumped and my friend laughed at me.

I have not seen it yet, but I have a hunch the sharks in the new film Open Water belong in this thread. I just saw Ebert's review & he said it was so intense and affecting that he had to go walk outside in the sunlight for several minutes afterwards. I will not be seeing this one in the theater. Not sharks.

Those movies are SO gross.

Pinhead was scary in the first one, but by the time the absolutely sickeningly gory number two rolled around, he became a good guy at the end!

I think the scariest horror villan of all time has got to be Leatherface from TCM. Imagine being chased by that guy all night....yikes. I also think the "evil spirit" from Evil Dead is creepy mainly because you can't see, hear, or feel it!!

And good choice Tommer, Zelda is totally creepy!! I forgot about that movie, thanks for the reminder.
Leatherface

Have you seen the remake? I was surprised at how good it was overall. It was so cheesy, but it was good, IMO. Very gory, though. It's funny because the original had no blood in it at all, but was terrifying.
