Oh you saw that film? That's great, I didn't know such a film about Australian issues would be received overseas. It is disturbing, that children from as recent as the 70s (these are generations ago, these are young people today) were taken from their parents for no reason other than racist attitudes. One thing I always note about Americans is there need to applaud after good work or a statement they agree with. That is something that does not happen here, except for one occasion in my experience. After the packed viewing, the entire audience started applauding and sat through all the credits. Atleast that's a positive sign because unless an apology is made, how can these people move on. So our government hasn't apologised but the people, in effect, have. The word 'sorry' has invaded the public sphere on many occasions. I've seen in in skywriting, the closing ceremony of the Olympics showed Midnight Oil performing in clothing with the word on it and I'm not sure but I think it's been displayed on either the Sydney Harbour Bridge or the Opera House. I remember at school, we invited the original inhabitants of that land to a ceremony where we said sorry despite our government and many such events have occured on larger scales. Atleast it's being recognised now but the native people here continue to get such a raw deal that it needs to be officially addressed.

I happened to catch it on TV, the TRUE channel (all films based on true stories/real people - that's where I finally saw The Pianist also.) The movie did generate some buzz here when it first came out (may have been nominated for an Oscar - wait, that can't be right. Cannes? Sundance? I don't know.) But it was never widely released here as far as I'm aware. Too bad - it's one of those movies everyone should see.
