I have a general rule of thumb when I do covers: I have to rearrange them and make them different — as if I would have written them. Christine's older songs are perfect for the piano (like "Why", "Say you love me", and "Songbird") - but the tunes from TANGO are more synthy. I think that when they are played "as-is" on piano, they sound so karaoke -- so I make them all ballad-y and sparse and feature the longingness in the lyrics. I love playing this slowed-down version of "Little Lies" at a show -- because i can see the lightbulbs going off in people's heads as they slowly start to recognize the lyrics taken away from the normal pop-structure. It's like an "a-ha" moment for them -- and then they start to sing along!
