The Hollywood Reporter, 4/17/2011 by Erik Pedersen

The co-headliners perform hit after comfy hit for an appreciative veteran crowd and duet on Stewart's "Young Turks" and Nicks' "Leather and Lace" in the first of two nights at the Hollywood Bowl.
A warm, invigorating breeze traipsed through the Hollywood Bowl as the boomer-fantasy pairing of Rod Stewart and Stevie Nicks played the first of two nights. And the coziness factor was ratcheted up as the co-headliners played hit after comfy hit for an appreciative veteran crowd that was out for a night of just that.

The L.A. stop on RaspFest '11, officially dubbed the Heart & Soul Tour, was a pleasing if occasionally uneven affair that juxtaposed Nicks' straightforward quasi-mystery and Stewart's broad-playing rock-star antics. She stood at the microphone, strumming occasional air guitar and making graceful little gestures; he peacocked around the stage, preening and teasing.

Ultimately, both were entertaining -- for the young, young at heart and otherwise. And that's what it was all about.

Nicks opened with a 70-minute set that she seemed more into than during her 2009 arena tour with Fleetwood Mac, likely invigorated by a new album due May 3. "The best year of Stevie Nicks' life just happened because of Dave Stewart," she said of the man with whom she wrote much of In Your Dreams, her first studio record in a decade. Lead single "Secret Love," a likable mid-upper-midtempo track she'd sung on The Oprah Winfrey Show three days before, drew a genuine cheer from the sellout crowd.

The rest of Nicks' show mined her solo/Mac catalog, including three songs from her 2001 album Trouble in Shangri-La. Dressed in trademark dripping, glittery gown, Nicks, 62, began with a vocally rough "Stand Back" but settled in by the time her six-piece band locked into the laconic/iconic groove of "Dreams." Her smoky vocal enveloped the 1977 hit.

Sometimes raspy, sometimes reedy, Nicks was at her best during crowd favorites "Gold Dust Woman" and the still-lovely "Landslide." During the latter, a video screen showed photos of her from infancy through stardom, many featuring her father.

A hard-rocking intro to "Edge of Seventeen" -- courtesy of guitarist Waddy Wachtel, who has played with Nicks for most of her 30-year solo career -- fired up the crowd. But its repetitive riff and lyrics were more grating than stirring, especially in the endless version that closed her main set.

Stewart delivered his rock 'n' soul canon with a pro's aplomb but without any of the Great American Songbook material that has been his stock in trade -- and bread and butter -- for the past decade. Instead, he showcased his legion of pop hits, from barroom rock to bedroom schmaltz, often punctuated by extended jams and theatrical codas.

His love of American soul -- not necessarily blues, like so many of his British Invasion contemporaries -- remains evident in his 21st century show. He covered the O'Jays and Sam Cooke (twice), and his revue-like act included brass players and female backup singers.

Stewart brought Nicks out to duet on two songs -- saying she'd picked one of his and he one of hers. It turned out to be a double of shot of 1981: They traded verses on Stewart's postdisco hit "Young Turks," a rather uninspired choice for their vocal teaming, but rebounded with a sultry take on "Leather and Lace."

Stewart deployed his familiar, crowd-pleasing versions of songs by the likes of Chuck Berry, Van Morrison, Cat Stevens, Tim Hardin and Tom Waits along with such self-penned smashes as "Tonight's the Night (Gonna Be Alright)" -- no less catchy or unchaste 35 years on -- and the beautiful "You're in My Heart."

His voice held up nicely until the late stages of the 100-minute set: He meandered through "Hot Legs" -- forgivable as he delighted the crowd with his trademark launching of dozens of soccer balls into the seats -- and, less excusably, the set-closing "Maggie May." Having dabbed his face with a handkerchief throughout the evening, the 66-year-old seemed fairly spent by the time he sang his breakout 1971 smash.

An encore of "DaYa Think I'm Sexy?" -- the third of his No. 1 singles that were sprinkled throughout the '70s -- got many in the crowd dancing, but it was a rather lurching end to a solid show.

The Orange County Register By STEVE FRYER, April 17, 2011
http://www.ocregister.com/entertainment/-296771--.html

Rod Stewart is as Entertaining as Ever at The Bowl

[They reviewed Rod and only mentioned Stevie at the end of the article].

Stevie Nicks opened with an 11-song show, and later joined Rod on stage for "Young Turks' (his song) and "Leather and Lace" (her song, written and recorded with Don Henley). Both were fine collaborations, with their voices mixing well enough that, sure, they should go forward with it.

Nicks' voice sounded better than ever, especially during the encore of "Love Is" during which she was accompanied by only piano and two supporting singers. She did a couple of her Fleetwood Mac hits, with "Gold Dust Woman" and "Rhiannon" given epic instrumental introductions that were a touch melodramatic. The songs are strong enough on their own, let 'em breathe.

[QUOTE=michelej1;966718]Rod forgot the words to Some Guys Have All the Luck and said it was because all of the illegal smoking in the audience was making him giddy.

I think something made them both very giddy. Touchy feely, silly, smiling a lot, more dancing, more carefree and happy, the way it should be.

When she said this last year working with Dave Stewart has been the best year of her life, I melted. She also dedicated Landslide to Dave. I was thrilled to hear Secret Love since it was the first time hearing her do it live. Edge was amazing, she had tons of enery. Love is was beautiful as usual and she did her trilogy speech before it. Although I'm not a big OTR fan it was a nice surprise since I didn't know she added it to the set. Most people were sitting in my section but I couldn't resist being up and dancing for at least half the songs. It was so obvious I was there for Stevie and didn't really care too much about Rod. Even when I was leaving this guy said "Hey, you're wearing the same outfit as Stevie and I'm all yeah, I'm a die-hard fan .

It was sooooo nice meeting & hanging out with you before the show!! I took that 1st picture huh, see I told yopu it looked good! My friggin camera was on video mode so instead of picture's I got short little videos of the night!

To the others that I had planned on mtg. before the show, sorry to have missed you, that place was a zoo! Lindsey (correct sp.?) & I had a hard time finding each other! So many people in a very small space!!

Not Coachella: Rod Stewart, Stevie Nicks revive their hits at the Hollywood Bowl

“It's Saturday night, so let's enjoy ourselves,” Rod Stewart suggested from the stage of the Hollywood Bowl, and his typically affable directive raised an important question: On which night of the week exactly does Rod Stewart not enjoy himself?

This 66-year-old English singer, at the Bowl on Saturday for the first of two odd-couple gigs with Stevie Nicks, has spent well over half his life honing a scruffy superstar insouciance. You'd call him a roué if he appeared to put any effort into the pursuit of pleasure; rather, Stewart's style is to encourage pleasure to come to him, which has kept his act remarkably free of the desperation that can sour a show composed, as this one was, of familiar material.

Leading a 13-piece band that included several female instrumentalists wearing red-fringed cocktail dresses, Stewart paired old hits such as “Maggie May” and “Rhythm of My Heart” with covers of even older songs by Sam Cooke and Chuck Berry. The music wasn't bashful about cycling through the styles that have marked the progression of Stewart's career: “Reason to Believe” had stand-up bass and fiddle, and “Young Turks” rode a crisp new wave pulse; later, a disco ball appeared for “Da Ya Think I'm Sexy?”

Whatever he was singing, though, Stewart exuded the same low-impact charm, shuffling across the brightly lighted Bowl stage as though he were on his way to dinner. (He changed colorful suit jackets several times even though he never worked up much of a sweat.) As for the singing itself, Stewart's signature rasp continues to edge toward a wheeze; it wasn't always audible Saturday over the sound of his band's pumped-up accompaniment. No matter: It's unlikely that anything he might have uttered would have said more about Rod Stewart than the sight of his kicking several dozen soccer balls into the crowd during “Hot Legs.”

Performing first at this hometown stop of what she and Stewart are calling the Heart & Soul Tour, Nicks, 62, revealed that she's lost a portion of her vocal range as well: The Fleetwood Mac frontwoman dodged high notes in “Dreams” and “Rhiannon” and took a low harmony line in “Edge of Seventeen,” leaving her backup singers to do the song's heavy melodic lifting.

Yet where Stewart used old-pro stage business to distract us from his limitations, Nicks turned hers into an asset, the rough grain of her voice concentrating the weird imperiousness of her music.

“Stand Back,” “Sorcerer,” “Gold Dust Woman” — these were powerful invocations of a type of mystery we rarely get from artists who've put in as much time as Nicks has in the public eye.

“There's no one that can take my place,” she sang with fists shaking in “Outside the Rain,” and it wasn't desperation she was expressing. It was total confidence.

I got lucky and ended up getting in after all. I wish I had checked the site to see which Ledgies were going, though. I thought the show was great, especially the performance of "Love Is".
