Okay, since you feel open to contrasting opinions, and since I'm almost the only one so far who says so- Stevie Nicks will be inducted as a solo artist into The Rock And Roll Hall of Fame. I mean, unless they close it! They're just waiting for the right time to induct her, like when Fleetwood Mac was inducted. She's attended many of the HOF ceremonies since the '97 or early '98 ceremony when Fleetwood Mac was inducted, and her continued support of being visible at the ceremonies wasn't only to welcome new members and enjoy the show, but to keep herself 'right there'. Unless it becomes a boy's club, they have to induct Stevie, there are very few women who achieved Stevie's level of huge rock stardom, yes, as a solo act. Maybe some of you, like Louie, who's super bright but seems way bored, or frustrated by SN's streamlined output, are too young to really know her impact in the 80s as a solo artist. And I understand that attitude, because a lot of you weren't old enough to remember or even were alive when she was 'the' rock chick and FM radio was playing album cuts of hers and any guest backup vocals she did in a way you wouldn't know. (for example, 'Violet and Blue' got heavy radio airplay on at least 2 LA stations, KMET and KLOS). Others, older I think, like one who wrote some friend didn't know Stevie was a solo artist ever, well the friend was likely 25 or younger, but definitely was uninformed and so it's immaterial what he or she may think. More importantly, The R&RHOF is well aware Nicks was a solo act. My 12 year and 11 year old nephews knew all about her before they knew I was a fan from centuries ago, and they like her a lot, but they're bright kids The Hall of Fame ain't gonna induct Olivia Newton-John, who was a tad more 'rock' than Madonna, ONJ at least tried a few rock songs over the years. Madonna did get inducted, because Jann Wenner's young hubby was a huge Madonna fan and Mo sold RS quite a lot of magazines and had a long run of hits, and she wanted it. But she's never even recorded one rock song. Janis Joplin, of course, was inducted for a career that lasted all of 3 years, but had staying power after her death. Stevie having survived won't be held against her, and as decades have gone by, Stevie's influence and recurrent airplay have been strong, though her new output has slowed down hugely. Joplin's estate has pretty much killed off Janis' continuing impact, and it has faded hugely since the 1990s. Poor choices were made in refusing to let a real Janis movie be made, there have been refusals by the heirs to release in the vault filmed performances, one never seen and almost 90 minutes in length made by a NY filmmaker in 1969. General mismanagement has prevented Joplin's legacy from being passed on to new generations of music buyers. While 'Love, Janis' had good things about it as a book, it has been rejected time and again as being the official Janis biopic, because it's all written from the perspective of her younger sister, and that's not the story Hollywood wants to tell. There's tons of discussion about it on the official Joplin site and another one. Janis just isn't 'selling' and hasn't been for eons, her brother says he could buy a couple lattes with the money her estate generates now, annually. Interestingly, Janis was fond of both of her younger siblings, but especially so of Michael, an artist, of the lattes. Well, anyway, Stevie could be inducted after her next solo cd comes out, even. Heart have to be inducted, if they haven't been yet. There just aren't many women who have had Stevie's impact, though I know that many here feel her major impact was as a member of Fleetwood Mac. I don't agree with that, completely, but so far, you're all correct because as of yet she hasn't been inducted as a solo act. I know it will happen. Ha- of course, I don't know for certain she'll get inducted as a solo act, any more than anyone knows that she won't be. Last edited by Nikolaj; 07-15-2010 at 01:00 AM.. |

Also Stevie was a staple in the very popular AOR radio (album oriented rock format) during this time. As Nikolaj pointed out, while her singles were played heavily on the top 40 format, her album cut's as well as singles were heavily rotated on AOR stations across the county. During this time you were very likely to hear album cuts as "Bella Donna", "Kind of Woman", "Enchanted", "Nothing Ever Changes", "No Spoken Word" & "Long Way To Go" on Rock radio, in fact I believe the latter 4 mentioned actually charted on Billboards Top 10 rock radio play chart. Her movie soundtrack contributions (esp. Violet and Blue & Battle of the Dragon) were also rotated heavily on AOR stations around the time of their release. Stevie's reign really only started to curtail after Rock A Little was released and peaked quickly (while Talk to Me was #4 pop hit) but did not have the leg's or radio staying power of her previous 2 releases (though, Stevie did embarked on her most successful tour of her solo career at that point.) This curtail can be attributed to a number of factors. Stevie timing for her 3rd released was much delayed and hurt her continuity, meanwhile a number of female artists where making a splash on the music scene mainly, Madonna, Cyndi Lauper & Tina Turner's comeback. Stevie's escalating drug & alcohol abuse was affecting her performance and decision making from fully marketing RAL to it's full potential. Stevie did however still remain a prominent presence in the music industry throughout the rest of the decade, with the success of "Tango In The Night" & "The Other Side of the Mirror", just not quite the domination she enjoyed during the 1st part of that decade. But during the 80's It's safe to say Stevie enjoyed more success and recognition as a solo artist than with Fleetwood Mac, and her solo career was definitely no small potatoes back then. Her only outright failure commercially is "Street Angel" (and even that eventually went Gold) & perhaps "The Soundstage Sessions" if the last one even count's cause it was not a brand new recording of all new material. Can Pat, Debbie, Cyndi & others count on their coattails such a low figure of commercial flops....I dont think so. It's no wonder & no doubt that Stevie has waited and probably feels alot riding on her next recording. Last edited by Christopher; 07-15-2010 at 01:33 PM.. |

Stevie is absolutly qualified and deserving to be in the hall of fame twice. Should it be immediately, doesnt have to. Are there others that should be there for the first time before she is a second; sure, many in fact. But the hall isn't always freaking fair. Grahm Nash is in there twice, as many times as Neil Young, who danm well should be in there 3 times along with Eric Clapton.

If Stevie doesn't "qualify" to be in the hall of fame, then what exactly are the qualifications?
Pat Benatar before her? Really? |
