If you want to know you're washing your hands long enough, wet them, soap 'em up, and then sing one chorus of "Happy Birthday." To yourself...not aloud. That supposedly is a proper amount of scrubbing time to kill off any nasties. There may be a couple people here who will have to sing a few choruses.

Ugh!! Me, too!!! I just don't get it. Why would anyone want to go around with their own bodily fluids (ew - I've always hated that expression) on their hands?? And what's more - we actually have signs about how to properly wash hands posted in the washrooms at my workplace. Clearly, these people don't read the literature provided.

The grossest thing: I work with women (and guys, I'm betting) who don't wash their hands after the washroom (I've seen them leave). And we all share keyboards, phones, etc. Brutal.

If we were all anal retentive... we wouldn't need to use the public washrooms.

Yeah, bacteria from the anus have a very short trip to the John Hancock.

I'm a hand-washer -- I wouldn't exactly say "compulsive," but I wash my hands after I wash the dishes! I wash my hands after using someone else's phone! I wash my hands after shopping for CDs or DVDs at Best Buy!

You get the picture.

I also carry around a little vial of antibacterial goo. When I sit down to eat at any restaurant, I have either just washed my hands in the restroom there or used some antibacterial goo.

Cold germs are everywhere: door handles & knobs, chairs, rental DVD cases, people's phones, etc.

I guess I'm a little anal-retentive too when it comes to hand washing.

After using the bathroom (anytime, anywhere) goes without saying. But I also do it all day long just because. I can be watching a movie at home and I'll pause it just to go wash my hands, when I haven't even left the couch in the past hour. I just can't stand them to feel at all sweaty/sticky/dirty. Ever.

I always wash my hands. Always. But as someone above said, if there is no soap I get grossed out. Only THEN will I not wash because touching that tap is worse and without soap that stuff will not come off! Eww eww eww.
Okay, see, this is what I don't understand. You go to the restroom, right? but then everyone has to:
A) touch the door to go into the stall, then,
B) touch the handle to flush, then:
C) touch the door to get out, then:
D) touch the faucet to turn it on, then finally their hands get washed. So, already, everyone has touched 3 surfaces that everyone else has touched before they washed their hands. (for girls). Shouldn't everyone really be washing their hands before they touch the door to go in, and then using a protective glove when they flush and then open the door and then turn on the faucet?
Honestly, it's amazing the human race as survived this long, what with all these killer germs floating around... *don't eat poultry in vietnam*.

Yes, but you then wash your hands after touching all of that ****. Turn the faucet off with a paper towel and either use the same paper towel to open the door or push it open with your ass. Voila, you don't have to touch anything in that bathroom again.

Well, I try my best NOT to use the rest room. But if I do have to go in one I will NOT use my hands. I use my foot or elbow. My foot to push open the door, the stall, and flush the toliet. My elbow to push the lever for the paper towel. No matter what I will use PURELL after leaving the bathroom. A woman's bathroom is disgusting. I don't even want to get into the woman that use the sanitary boxes on the side of the stall. YUCK. No thanks.

Right, but you wipe after having touched all that stuff. And for boys, you touch your hoohoo with all those "pre washing your hands" germs.
Unless you paper towel yourself all up, like you said.
I have to agree with Strand, there are some seriously anal people on here. (yes, I wash my hands).

When I worked with mentally retarded people this is how we were trained to wash our hands. You wash rigorously for at least 60 seconds under the tap. Then turn off the water with a dry paper towel. I also never use my hand to flush, eww, eww, eww, only my foot. Yes, I am anal about public restrooms, ironic ain't it?

It's a rarity, trust me. There are, sadly, times when I just have to pee and can't help it.
