Default Top Ten Favorite Sitcoms

I caught a clip of one of those lame "Top Ten" shows on TV Land in the middle of the night and got to thinking about what I thought were the best and funniest sitcoms from over the years.

1. Malcolm In the Middle - Has me rolling every time I see it and I never tire of it. Highly rewatchable and I swear that they based Lois on my own mother, from the discipline to the screaming of "Do you think we're wealthy?!" at the top of her lungs.
2. Good Times - Not as good after John Amos left, but until then, it was hysterically funny.
3. Green Acres - I always thought of it as a comic version of Twin Peaks. Rather insane for a sixties sitcom.
4. Murphy Brown - Dan Quayle jokes never get old.
5. Maude - Bea Arthur is enough for me. I especially loved the episode where she went to a psychiatrist and the entire thing was comprised of her giving a 22-minute monologue. It needs to be put on DVD.
6. Soap - Jessica Tate is one of the best characters ever. Much love for Katherine Helmond.
7. Roseanne - The last few seasons were putrid, but those first ones were genius. Laurie Metcalf was my personal favorite, she always had my sides hurting.
8. The Golden Girls - Four elderly women incessantly talking about sex and coveting cheesecake like Shrub covets oil. Loved it.
9. All In the Family - I still think it's hilarious and some of the things they did on that show must have been truly shocking back then. Same with Soap, Maude, and Good Times.
10. Cheers - So good that I still can't choose between Shelley Long and Kirstie Alley.

I would have added Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman, but it wasn't a sitcom. I would have also added Absolutely Fabulous, but I don't consider that one a sitcom, either.

Talking YAY, a top 10 list!!

In no particular order:

1. The Office - British version and American now too (O..M..G...this show is too funny for words, and Ricky and Steve are the worse bosses EVAH!)

2. Seinfeld - Classic...random....hilarious.

3. Coupling - British version ONLY and really only the first 3 seasons, but the fourth wasn't too horrible. Very quotable show!

4. The Monkees - They crack me up with their delivery and facial expressions more than anything. Gotta love the fun music too.

5. Wings - One of my favorite shows of allll time and I heart Joe and Helen.

6. Blackadder - The second and third seasons are the best. "I have a cunning plan." Hee!

7. King of Queens - Have always liked Kevin's stand up and this show never fails to crack me up.

8. Frasier - "I'm not gay, Gee!" "I'm listening." One of the best spinoffs EVAH!

9. Night Court - Dan Fielding is one of the best sitcom characters EVAH!

10. The Golden Girls - Never fails to crack me up! I love that they all have majorly different personalities.

Ack, I can't believe I forgot Wings. One of my favorites. Every season rocked, truthfully, and I loved when Amy Yasbeck joined. Not a Farrah Forke fan, so I was glad to see her go.

It wasn't until a couple of years ago that I figured out what they were saying! And I've had 4 years of French! It just sounded like one long, muddled word.

me, too. I always just sang "dominahrendezvous". Actually that's the only part you can't understand...
P.S. Roseanne and Third Rock are really good, too.

I forgot about Mr. Show!!! I only saw it a few times, but those times it was really funny.

Also: Highlander is not a sitcom.

Sitcoms...kind of a "thing of the past" for the most part...at least in Case De Chili...we're hooked on History, Discovery & Science channels mostly now:

Actually, I could pretty much just list all the NBC "Must See" comedies that were on through the years...that was my "night" for TV watching.

Here's the cream of the crop in our house:
Stark Raving Mad (MUCH too short of a run...at least Tony Shaloub got "Monk" in fairly short order)
Scrubs (the fantasy sequences are hilarious)
Bosom Buddies (just hard to believe this is where Tom Hanks started)
Reno 911 (just keeps getting funnier & funnier)
South Park
Friends (never seem to tire of it...but I just can't seem to get into seeing Joey by himself)
Dick Van Dyke Show (one from my childhood)
The Cosby Show (when I was recouping from my "debacle in December", I started watching the syndicated re-runs...got hooked on it all over again)
ALF (didn't watch faithfully, but if I saw it was on, I watched...where are the re-runs?)
Fraiser (never seemed to have "jumped the shark"...although it DID come close a couple of seasons way back when, when they were trying to cover up Jane Leeves' pregnancy without writing a "Daphne's pregnant" into storyline)
Mad About You (loved the Buchmans)

BONUS:
Buffalo Bill (GREAT show! Geena Davis, Dabney Coleman, Joanna Cassidy)

And...well, yeah...most of the Norman Lear shows...
All In The Family
The Jeffersons
Sanford & Son
Maude

Others that got much viewing (NOT on re-runs, mind you...rarely watch any of the syndicated re-runs):

Cheers
Seinfeld
3rd Rock
Night Court
Wings
Will & Grace
Newhart/Bob Newhart Show
Get Smart
Bewitched
I Dream Of Jeannie
Gilligan's Island
My Mother The Car
Coach
Taxi
Barney Miller
Dobie Gillis
Andy Griffith
Spin City
(Michael J. Fox years, mostly...although Charlie Sheen was pretty funny, too; I kind of lost interest)

I guess I spent a LOT of time watching sitcoms.

How about a top five instead? ('Cause I can't think of ten!)

1. Black Adder

All time best TV show of any kind!!! The second season was by far the greatest, but all were wonderful.

2. Night Court

Interestingly, the star of this show - Harry Anderson - was probably the least funny cast member. John Larroquette, who played Dan Fielding, absolutely made the show. TV Land recently did a weekend long marathon and I was glued to the set.

3. Roseanne

I always like the character of Darlene, because she reminded me of me. Also had the biggest crush on Johnny Galecki (spelling?) who played David, Darlene's boyfriend. Was an incredible show until the Connors won the lottery. Then it just got stupid.

4. Married with Children

So politically incorrect! So funny!

5. Murphy Brown

For some reason I always liked the neurotic Miles Silverburg the most.

I was bummed when he left, but they redeemed themselves when they got Lily Tomlin. She's truly gifted. All she has to do is give a look of the eye and I'm in stitches. Now, if only they would play it more than ONCE on Nick At Nite and release more seasons on DVD...

I forgot to mention Moonlighting, which isn't really a sitcom, but it's incredibly funny and one of my all time favorites. Such a *fantastic* show.

Not in order:
The Jeffersons - One of the first i 've ever seen and is still among my favourites
Frasier - Perfectly acted, great jokes and storyline.
Roseanne - Anti - conventional and violently truthful.
Taxi - I watched it mainly for Danny De Vito.
The Nanny - Great, funny characters, and the subplot (C.C - Niles) was way better than the main plot (Fran - Max).
3rd Rock From The Sun - Even only for the first two or three seasons: John Lithgow is a brilliant actor.
Alf - best alien ever landed on Earth.
Bette - It's a shame they canceled it so soon, to see Bette Midler doing Bette Midler was wonderful.
Get Smart - 007 pales at comparison.
The Simpsons - It has the best comedy writers around, IMO.

Get Smart was the best....

My ultimate guilty pleasure, I love ALF. Season two comes out on tomorrow on DVD, I believe.

"Look! All the glamour of a leather bar without the two drink minimum."

I loved it, too, and it would have been spectacular with better writers. Bette should have nabbed Bruce Vilanch. She's now going to co-headline Caesar's Palace with Celine and Elton, so I can't wait for that. And she's coming out with an album of Peggy Lee songs this fall, too.
