I was part of a discussion last night about what is the best age to be. Most of us (all mid-40s) agreed that 30 was the best. We based it on a balance of accumulated wisdom vs. physical deterioration. Grey hair might be a big deal to a young person, but when you're looking at knee replacements, prostate exams (men), and NO hair, a little grey is nothing.

If I start to feel old, I think about the positive things that I've got because of my age. There's a lot to be said for settling into your career, having confidence in what you do, and being above the youngsters battling each other for rungs on the career ladder.

I also think about things I've experienced that no longer exist and younger people will never be able to enjoy. For example: I used to love the smell of mimeographed copies and can dredge that wonderful oder up from my memory at any time. You kids don't know what you missed (or even what the hell I'm talking about).

Basically, enjoy where you're at, because what you think of as problems now will seem trivial in the future. But don't fear the future, because cool stuff awaits you there.

No, you definitely look years younger than your age.

Good because I wasted my 20s doing stuff I didn't want to do, now I'm doing some of the stuff I wanted to do then. I'm too "old" to be single according to a lot of people. But I don't care, I'm happy. I will meet someone at some point. Things are really good and I do not feel old. I also agree that age is a state of mind. I think I need some younger "friends" though.

Thanks for saying that, Riss. Also, I thought you were like 20. I still don't know how old you actually are. Is that about right? You say you're young but "old", I do get that. I am younger now than I was in my 20s because I am much more light hearted, believe it or not! I was always worried about something back then.

Thanks for this nice post and perspective, and hello from a fellow Bostonian.

I remember mimeograph machines, we had them still in grammar school.

I see pictures of myself when I was a teen and think how pretty and thin I was, too bad I could not see that then. But the point is to appreciate me today, which can be a constant battle. The gym helps because I know it's good for me so it gives me a boost. I think that might be the fountain of youth.

That was a nice post, great points. Though I may already be looking at that knee replacement, you are mainly right. I feel very happy that I was born in time to experience some of the seventies and early 80's.

Hmm, I don't think so, you look pretty young. It's fun to be hot and young! Being hot is, like, the most important thing and stuff.

like, omigod, I totally think so, too!!!
(okay, I do enjoy it when it happens, and think it is very special, but I get that that is shallow, and can make fun of it with you.) okay? forgiven? I'll get back to you when I am "hot" again.
P.S., unless you have lines on your forehead, you do look younger. Not that I care, actually. I was just trying to compliment you, again.

No, you truly do look younger as does Deborah.

I'll be 22 on the 1st of September. I've only been carded once and that's only because I was with people in their mid 20s who looked like they were in their teens I remember back a few years ago (I was about 19 at the time), I went to DSW with my mother. I was wearing jeans, heels, a black blazer and a red cami. Some woman came up to me as I was browsing and said, "you're like, what? 30?...do you think these are too young for us to wear?" I looked at my mom and laughed. I told her I was only 19 but they weren't "too young" for her. She apologized profusely.

I think a lot of it has to do with how you're raised and as you know (I think), i'm an only child. I've always hung around an older crowd and not with people my own age and I think it's shaped who I am -- for better or worse!

not me, I'm in the bay area. But I was in Chico last weekend, and almost died, of course, yet was also really happy. I posted some pics of us at honey run, if you want to take a look. It was fun.

Wow, only once? I think you're lucky. I get carded often. I don't know if the law is the same in every state but now I believe you're supposed to card anyone who looks under 37 or so in Louisiana. (I might have the age a little off but I know it's some random age that's over ten years older than 21).
