I am a trekkie, my favorite is Star Trek Next Generation, then Star Trek the Original, then Deep Space Nine, which was by far the most complicated and interesting series of them all.

None. I'd rather watch Once Upon A Time, but please keep that a secret. |

Speaking of Star Trek, William Shatner was at this week's Comic Con in Columbus, Ohio.
Tasha Yar was there a few years ago. |

But I guess the only way to know is to try them all and then make my own opinion. |

Right now we are in he middle of rewatching Voyager, after we finished rewatching TNG, and Enterprise. I am so surprised so many people resent Voyager, since it is my fave Trek besides TNG. Janeway is a fantastic captain, so dedicated to her crew and their mission to get back home. She takes **** from no one, and yet, she is so loyal to the prime directive. She is also probably the bravest of all captains. Chakotay, B'Elanna, Tuvok Seven, and especially the Doctor (EMH), are also great characters. Now Neelix is a bit annoying, and Paris, is a bit blah, but I can live with that. There are also some really bad episodes, but every single Trek had their share of those. I guess that many people couldn't accept a female captain, which is ridiculous, but all my life I've been surrounded by strong women, and wimpy men, so I don't have a problem with that. Its sad they had to rush the finale the way they did, since I feel they really had much more to offer. The Original Series are bit outdated now, but I still love them. DS lacks the classic Star Trek atmosphere, and I couldn't really handle the somehow semi-religious context of the main plot. Enterprise is a hot mess, with the worst captain EVER, besides the smoking hot Vulcan (I might be gay, but I still have eyes, and great admiration of female beauty LOL). They had the worst choice of actors of all the Treks. TNG will always have a special place in my heart, since I remember curling up with my grandma on the couch, and watching it when i was five years old in the late 80s-early 90s. Yup, shes 80, and still a Trekkie LOL. The only thing I don't like about TNG are the characters of the wimpy Troy and Riker. I cant put my finger on it, but something about those two really bugs me. My list of favorite Treks quality and captain wise would go like this: TNG Voyager (close second) TOS DS9 Enterprise P.S. This post made me realize I am a geek. ****... ![]() |

And there are many ocassions in watching TNG where I think Troi would be extremely useful to have around, and she is nowhere to be seen, without explanation. But the writing generally is so darn smart that I don't mind much.Still thoroughly enjoying the series. Watched all of season 4 now. So consistently brilliant. I've backpeddled and am making my way through the far-less-celebrated season 2 now. I still like it, but there's definitely the sense that the characters and writers are still figuring things out. |

I remember my sisters ex boyfriend was glued to the TV when the original Star Trek aired on WNEW channel 5 "Now FOX WNYW "or WPIX 11 from New York City .This was back in the 1970's.
She was pissed at him of that habit.

Voyager gets little respect, feh! A friend called the female captain 'space mom', guess that puts the kibosh on it's excitement for some... but I know all the guys secretly or not so secretly dug sevenofnine once they got going with her, she practically took over the series I thought.
I've never tried the prequel series Enterprise, maybe if it gets rerun at a good time slot/channel I get. But I think the two new prequel movies might make them want to forget that series happened. What I learned from Star Trek: Aliens = problems! It's always those darn aliens causing trouble isn't it! Even if they are furry and purr... (I did see that Deep Space 9 where they go back in time to the classic tribble episode, amazing). Star Trek should have had a psych rock soundtrack then it would be really spacey. Keep on' trekkin (with Capt. Garcia and Ensigns Weir and Lesh)! ![]() |

Deep Space Nine was beautifully written. There was a religious theme running through the series and a lot of it had to do with ones destiny. Deep Space Nine was located in deep space beside a worm hole. The worm hole and the beliefs about it affected Bajorian culture, as it would any culture. There was a mystical quality about it. Eventhough the Bajorians were technically superior to us, they remained superstitious and petty and strong... alot of the relgious hiearchy were corrupt. Sorta reminds me of the new Battlestar Galatica, which was great.
It was just complicated and deeper than the other series. I named my dog after Major Kira. She was a great character, more important than Sisco I think. Unfortunately, the last year of it petered out. Still, the first years were heaven. |

I think TOS had its share of standout episodes, IIRC "City on the Edge of Forever" was the first TV episode to win a Hugo (I could be wrong). But as far as repeated viewings go I mostly love it for the movies, although the series built up my affection to get to that point. TNG, OTOH, I love rewatching some of the episodes, but the movies I found largely disappointing.
Re. Riker and Troi, they were basically taken from the characters of Decker and Ilia from the first Star Trek movie (with the original cast). Telepathically linked lovers, one human, one alien, had a youthful romance interrupted by the human man's career ambitions, etc. The tone of their scenes in the first season reflected a more 70's spec fic attitude, and then later on they became less ... heightened and angsty (see "Haven"), more humorous and comfortable. Troi seriously suffers from terribly victimizing plots, though it gets better as the show goes on. There were some kinda sexist things going on with the writing decisions even though the 24th century was supposed to be a time of egalitarianism (Marina Sirtis and Gates McFadden were the two main cast members with the most martial training or what have you, yet they did the least amount of on-screen fighting ... even though their characters were ostensibly trained for it ...). They also had trouble making Troi's "superpower" work on screen, she was stuck just stating the obvious a lot of the time. Still I think they could've utilized her better as an empath on a ship that did a lot of diplomatic work, and I will say that I liked that her potential stemmed from a stereotypically "feminine" source (being "good" with thoughts and feelings), she was conceived to be a sort of anti-Spock yet every bit as valuable and important in the setting. She also, needless to say, suffered from the network wanting her to be "the hot chick" of the show. But for all that I liked her, especially when they let Troi be funny because Sirtis is actually really salty and funny. But there are a lot of throwaway Troi episodes. However her parts in "Disaster", "Power Play", "Face of the Enemy" and "Thine Own Self" tend to be favored overall."Night Terrors", "The Price" and "The Child" work for some, and for others are examples of what is so annoying about Troi. Anything with a mind-raped Troi was very regrettable. I also liked Riker, but I will confess a lot of it might be because I find Jonathan Frakes so nice in reality. I liked his (the character's) career ambitions conflict and his father issues but I think he ended up with less development than he would've received if Roddenberry had lived. As I understand, Picard, Riker and Crusher were meant to be the show's power trio, kinda like the captain, first officer and CMO were on the original show, but eventually Picard, Data and Worf became the most popular characters and had the most developed character arcs over the show's course. Still I liked how he started out as kind of Kirk 2.0 and then by the end of the series he became the kinda guy that the younger version of himself would've found a dull stickler, an interesting comment on what it takes to move up the leadership ranks. I loved Kate Mulgrew on Voyager, I wish that show had fulfilled its potential better because I don't think they could've asked for a better first female captain for the franchise. Originally Genevieve Bujold was going to plan (Nicole) Janeway, certainly would've been different. Mulgrew had that Hepburn style strength that was one of my favorite parts of the show. And I liked that DS9 actually recognized that religion could still exist in the 24th century. Whatever you think about it, it's been a very important part of the human experience and it stands to reason I think that nonhuman societies would face similar experiences. |
