ok, so i can't find what i listened to that i severely disliked, but i'll get find it eventually... it sounded very dissonant (you know, kind of like a lot of classical music became in the 2nd half of 20th century).

meanwhile, i found this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4he_jgJrMCk , and harmonies, or whatever you would call that, sound to me somewhat like BN - no wonder LB likes it. i know i'll be stoned for admitting this here, but i'm not very fond of most of BN stuff i've heard.

re phoenix, i actually know lisztomania, just didn't know who sings that - was a huge hit a while ago, and i did like it. don't remember hearing if i ever feel better before.

How on earth can you possibly like Lindsey new music and to a further extent Go Insane or L&O, and dislike that kind of music. Are you only enjoying Lindsey because you have followed him for a long time? Mentioning bands like REM as examples of bands you wish he listened to is scary. When Stevie mentions crap like Katy Perry and sings with **** like Taylor swift we have an issue. I'm honestly blown away by the distain for Phoenix, my god, they had the album of the year 2 years ago with Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix.

Do you enjoy Tusk or only because it has the Fleetwood Mac brand attached to it?

Phoenix aren't really my favorite in the realm of modern bands, but they're definitely a hell of a lot better than most of the crap out there. Lindsey's shown himself to have great taste in terms of new music (as opposed to a lot of what Stevie talks about listening to these days... yikes indeed ) I may be biased because I was already a fan, but it was so awesome to see him say he loved "anything by Radiohead" from 1997 on. It's great that such an elder in the ranks of rock keeps an open mind & has a love for music that, when compared to his & FM's cannon, is pretty far out there. And I personally think it goes beyond admiration, I can hear the influence they have on him in his newer stuff, albeit subtle. And naturally, some of the most talented, progressive musicians today cite him as an influence. Always love when the members of Animal Collective name drop LB

I think Lindsey is just progressing WITH the more art oriented pop rock we're hearing today, that he no doubt had a hand in brining to the mainstream in his heyday..whereas so many other musicians of his stature & age are outside of or unaware of such musical movements, just resting on their laurels.

But see, everyone has different tastes. Although I personally enjoy a lot of Phoenix there are plenty of other amazing indie bands out there that may be along the realms of other people's personal taste. I see what you mean, though, and you make a lot of sense. I think LB has pretty fantastic taste in music, as many of his personal favorite modern artists are ones I adore as well. But then again, since I agree with him of course I'll say he has fantastic taste.

And I kind of love R.E.M. Not everything, but certainly they have made some great stuff. I would never put them on the same level as Katy Perry or Taylor Swift (barf). I mean...come on! They may be more mainstream but they have had quality stuff.

I did think it was cute that Stevie Nicks mentioned John Mayer's album Battle Studies as her personal top album and then Lindsey, when attending some Grammy thing, said this just skip to 0:24):

They DO have something in common.

Woah. Chill out before you explode, or have an embolism or something.

Just because they're artists you like, doesn't mean that people who enjoy one artist automatically ought to like them to or they're being some kind of music heathen. We're perfectly entitled to dislike them if we so wish. Being "current" or not has absolutely no baring on it. We enjoy music because we have a personal connection to it, be it lyrically or melodically. Just because an artist resembles their style doesn't mean we'll have the same connection. And seriously....You think winning an award is a good enough reason to listen to an artist? Honestly? Well Chris De Burgh won awards but I'd still rather have my ears plastered.

No. Does that answer your question? I enjoy music because I enjoy music. I couldn't give a hoot about the brand attached to it. As you seem to accuse us of enjoying Lindsey's music merely because it had the Mac brand attached to it (which these days is barely even relevant considering how far removed the styles are from the other), I feel it necessary to accuse you of the same. You seem to hold alot of store in what's popular currently, what album won an award (and why that removes any right people had before of disliking them), and as such, why it is such an offence to not share your own tastes.

To be honest with you love, your post makes me quite angry. Which may be due in part because the hypocritical aspects of it are quite glaring.

Oh, and by the way...R.E.M. rule. That's my opinion. May not be yours but I don't even care.

I sometimes think that love for Go Insane will depend on how old the album was when you first heard it and how old you were.
I first saw the video for 'Go Insane' in 1984 when I was almost 10. I had never heard a song like it and I had never seen a video like that one.
I did not hear the whole album until 1988. At first listen, I loved almost every song. It did take time for some parts of D.W. Suite to grow on me.
If someone first listened to GI after they heard OOTC , they are going to hear it differently than someone who listened to it earlier.
If someone first listened to GI in 2004, they are going to take it very differently than someone who listened in 1984.
I've heard the comments about how 'dated' it sounds. I know that good music should be 'timeless' and sound 'fresh' in any era. Still GI is a 'period piece'. It's always going to have '80s' stamped right on the listening experience. Still, that can be okay.
You can tell what eras paintings are from by the style, but that doesn't detract from something being a work of art.

A great way to listen to GI is in sequence, after Lindsey's songs on 'Tusk' and the "Law and Order" album. Such a different style to L/O, much more 80's. Suits Lindsey's intense ('turmoily') style back then, IMO.

To me, GI represents an evolution from the delibarate off-key Tusk stuff and the off-center L/O stuff. Both of which I love, incidentally. But it's Lindsey going as mainstream as he would wit hthe 80's style music.

It's very rare to hear the word "mainstream" used synonymously with Lindsey's work The next time I have chance to break out my vinyl I'll take your advice and do the whole Tusk, L&O and GI sequence. I look forward to the new perspectives. I don't usually tend to sequence my listening, and merely jump from album to album of whatever artist I feel like at the time. So a more technical approach would be interesting to take. I think the last time I listened to GI, I chased it with Nick Drake. Boy was that an experience I never believed that you could literally trip listening to an album before that.

I don't listen to music that much anymore. I'm sad to say that it was this car commercial that turned my attention to Phoenix. I thought the music in the commercial was captivating and I wanted to know what the lyrics were. So, I did an online query for that car commercial and I saw that it was 1901. I saw that the lyrics I was focusing on were "fold it, fold it, fold it." From then on I got the song and then I got the album. But for the commercial, I never would have inquired into the band.

I appreciate Go Insane now more than ever. Play in the Rain has such a weird time signature. Animal Collective's Merriweather Post Pavilion reminds me a lot of that album. Dense, playful and melodic.

Go Insane has always been my favorite Lindsey-album. It still is, but SWS is becoming a real contester. It are both albums with a thought throughout. UTS is too, but it has some weaker songs I think. Still, these albums are the ones that I cannot put on pause. You have to listen to them beginning to end, because everything seems to need eachother to shine in full form. The other three, to me, are more compilations of songs, and although on OOTC everything is linked too, I still feel that those songs standout more "alone" than as an album.

Yup. That's all I could think when I first heard MPP. I love both albums. Animal Collective and Lindsey... I wonder what they could come up with if they worked together. They both write great pop melodies and have plenty of glorious weirdness.
