Meanwhile, look at the bright side -- when the "FWIW" clip is completed, we will have gotten THREE videos from this album so far. When was the last time we got three videos from one of Stevie's albums? Never. And, to make it even sweeter, we still have more videos to look forward to. Total win-win.
First of all, I don't believe that at all. I'm sure that Secret Love was Stevie's choice. There is no way in hell anyone except Stevie would of picked that song to be first. Dave didn't consider it a favorite. Neither did the rolling stone critic. Few people after listening to that album would consider it to be the standout track from it.

For What It's Worth got chosen because of the reviews, which cited it as Landslidesque. I will say the edited version is better than what's on the album and I definitely want to replace the album version with it. I have always liked the song, but it fealt misplaced on album or not sequenced right.

I'm not so sure it was solely Stevie who wanted Secret Love. They probably thought it would be a good single because it would give her and the media something to talk about - both because it was an old vault song that could have been on FM or Rumours, and also because of the whole 'Secret Love' mystery... I think that's why it was the first single.. not because of the quality of the song.

Yay for another video!

As for "Secret Love" well we know that Glen Ballard considered it a gem when he heard it, so at least one of her producers thought it was a great song. Frankly I think it is too. It's the right length, it's concise, it's a good song, it's well sung....and it made #20 on AC, roughly matching the performance of two of the singles off Trouble In Shangri-La from 10 years earlier.

Someone mentioned on one of the threads that with the release of "For What It's Worth" it seems like maybe Stevie's album was sequenced to put the singles at the front end (they were speculating that "In Your Dreams" would be single #3). It's an interesting idea. I think many of the other songs on the album are better songs but these first three songs do seem to present themselves well as single choices.

You don't believe what? That the A&R department of a record company chooses the single?

Just to cite for you one example of the decision making process, and what it involves: Madonna wanted "Impressive Instant" as the fourth single from her album 'Music.' Warner Bros wanted "Amazing." Madonna refused to promote "Amazing" or film a concept video for it, so WB decided they would release the single without her involvement and would issue a live video. Madonna then dropped the song from her setlist to prevent it from being filmed, and WB ultimately abandoned their plans.

MADONNA doesn't even get final say in the single choices from her albums, without manipulating the situation to her advantage. So, no offense, but what makes you think Stevie does?

In regards to "Secret Love," I think it's a no-brainer why the record company would favor it as a single. It's just slightly over 3 minutes long, it's upbeat & catchy, it appeals to the Adult Contemporary format, and it has a backstory that connects with Stevie's & Fleetwood Mac's heyday. That kind of song is beyond easy to promote.

I love the Madonna back story. I take it you work in the industry?

Regarding Secret Love, I think it's the obvious first single choice on the album...all the way down to the finely tuned production.

Record companies pick the singles! duh!

I wonder if that's one of the reasons Madonna dropped Warners ass?
